Congrats Janelle Monae!

by Chelsea Smith

Clutch would like to send our utmost congratulations to our girl Janelle Monae for her 2009 Grammy nomination! This weekend, she received recognition in the category of Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her single “Many Moons,” alongside artists such as Kenna and Chrisette Michele feat. Will.I.Am. Janelle, who celebrated her birthday last Monday, was shocked as ever to hear the news from Bad Boy CEO Sean Combs on the night of the announcement. As she revealed to the AJC

“Nobody was expecting this… I don’t have a [full-length] major, big album. I don’t have a big radio single … and to still be recognized among so many talented people is just a blessing.”

Well despite your surprise, Ms. Monae, we knew that it was only a matter of time before your pure and unique talent would be recognized at such a grand level. Best of wishes to you, and continued success!

She is one of the brightest stars on the scene. Her boundless energy and imagination should be duly rewarded. I haven’t this excited about a new artist in years, maybe since D’Angelo minus the failure.
