Top Black Films That Should Be In Every African American Household

Movies are great. They can be entertaining and provide worthwhile distraction from our daily lives. They can also serve to enlighten and inspire us to reach beyond our own expectations and make our dreams a reality. While there may not be as many Black films in existence than we’d like to admit, there still exists a good number movies that should be found in every African American household. A few of our favorites include:

Brown Sugar –This modern day Hip-Hop based romance is at the top of our list not only because it showcases many of our favorite stars (Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Queen Latifah & Boris Kodjoe to name a few), but it’s also an extremely well written, heartwarming story.

Something The Lord Made – An inspirational biopic about Vivien Thomas, a brilliant mechanic and tool maker who – despite rampant racism at Johns Hopkins University – helped to invent the bypass surgery without so much as a college degree.

The Wiz – This late 70’s remake of The Wizard of Oz featuring Diana Ross & Michael Jackson is an inspiration both musically and cinematically. Sadly, there hasn’t been one African American film that has captured the wonder and fantasy of The Wiz to date.

Love Jones– Starring Nia Long and Larenz Tate, this late 90’s romantic story explores the complex relationship between a poet and photographer trying to make it in Chicago. Love Jones is every bit as passionate as it is thought provoking – a definite addition to your catalog.

The Color Purple – Alice’s Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winning tale was adapted to the screen in 1985 starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey. Set in the early 1900’s, The Color Purple chronicles the life of Celie (played by Goldberg) and her struggle to transform the dreadful obstacles of her life into a source of love and strength.
