Kim Kardashian, Defined

She’s everywhere. Folks across the country are familiar with her name, her face, her shapely physique, even her family, but there are still those who want to know: Who is Kim Kardashian, exactly? After the dust settled from the Ray-J sex tape fiasco, Kim Kardashian has risen from the ranks of Hollywood celebutante status, and strives to live up to her self-proclaimed title of “hard working entrepreneur.”

Kim has multiple irons in the fire with her various fashion pursuits, a reality show and a new work out DVD. Fit In Your Jeans By Friday, her latest three-series video, hit the stands just last month. The attire-inspired fitness program was brought on by fond memories of getting fit with her friends and family. “In high school, my sisters and I would rent these fitness videos and work out in our bedrooms,” she said “It was a fun social thing for us to do. But it seems since I got a little older and I got busy, I would work out less. Once I got into the habit, I completely changed my life and [now] I work out constantly. I wanted to do something fun and young, that would motivate people to get back into working out – to tone up, but keep your curves.”

In addition to her latest DVD, Kim is expecting to drop her new perfume line at the end of the year. As recently featured in their reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, the experience of creating a fragrance line was full of both joy, and a fair share of grief.

“[There was] drama from the start with my sisters because they wanted a perfume, and didn’t understand why I [went ahead and] did it without them,” Kardashian says. “At the same time, when my mom and I went through this process [together], it was fun for us. You go through the process of picking the scents, but what you think you want, is so much different than what you really want. I went into the factory to put drops of gardenia, tuberose, whatever other scents I wanted, and it’s just so much stronger when it’s the pure scent. It was a really fun process, besides my sisters trying to ruin my dream for me.”

Part of the dispute between the Kardashian sisters stemmed from their inability to choose a name for the scent.

“They didn’t want me to use the name I chose [which was] Dashing, by Kim Kardashian. The perfume won’t come out until the end of the year, so we still have time to figure it out.”

Kim stays busy between shooting 16-hour days for the show (which has been picked up for a few more episodes in Season three) and her various other projects, but she still makes time for her long term boo, NFL player Reggie Bush. Shooting down rumors of upcoming nuptials, Kim sheds light on her relationship with her dashing boyfriend.

“Everyone asks when are we getting engaged. We are so happy, but we have a normal happy relationship. We don’t feel the pressure. We’re doing things at our own time.

“So many people rush into [marriage], and we just feel like in Hollywood, you’ve either got to be engaged, married, having a baby, or breaking up. It can’t just be normal, and just have a happy relationship. I swear, we’re not even exciting. We have the most normal relationship ever.”

Although she seemed oblivious when asked about their experience of being an interracial couple in America, she had no problem explaining their formula for longevity. “I would say the best part, and why we compliment each other are that we’re really opposites, and he totally grounds me. He’s my biggest reality check every single day. We understand each other, and we’re best friends. He lets me work and do my thing because I am busy and it’s frustrating sometimes when you don’t see a person that much. [But] the best part is [that] we have a very committed relationship.”

In a day and age where the socialite can take the fast track to increased wealth and superstar status, Kim Kardashian may very well prove that she has more to offer than a pretty face, keen fashion sense, and all the right “friends.” In addition to her aforementioned projects, her apparel shops Dash and Smooch. Kim is also the founder and chief stylist of a new company called shoedazzle.com. For $39 a month, Shoe Dazzle will provide a stylist who chooses “distinctive” and “trend-right” shoes based on results of a personality style questionnaire.

So, it’s plain to see that whether it’s being mentioned on Eminem’s new track, her reality program, or making moves in the fashion world, Kim Kardashian will remain a fixture on the scene – and in regards to our opening question, Kim Kardashian simply replies:

“I am completely an entrepreneur [and] a really hard worker. Don’t believe what you read about me. It’s literally, probably not true.“

If it’s not a big deal then you stop. You knew about her, that’s you. She was not known like she is now. She was not a star. She did not warrant interviews. She was a so-called stylist for those that she befriended after the fact; she was not no stylist like that. You can keep trying to justify to make her look good but the fact remains her fame is off a sex tape.

J-lo and Jessica Alba are stars that claim to fame consist of talent. They have a resume with credibility.

  2. avatar Lady Luv says:

Because Kim is a big big big publicity whore. Right, nobody had a problem eith those ladies because for the upteenth time THEIR CLAIM TO FAME IS NOT A SEX TAPE. Their not media whores that pull publicity stunts to stay in the limelight. They actually have some talent.

It saddens me that with all the other features that Clutch has, this is the one with the most comments. And of those comments most are berating a HUMAN being. Regardless of your stance on Kim K, she’s human and so are we. All of us have made mistakes and are imperfect, so why point the finger at someone else and state their shortcomings?

If you don’t know her personally, how can you have so much disdain for her? The media has created the image you have of her just as anything else.

We are always so busy tearing down others instead of helping to build each other up. Why is that?

What happened to that rule that mamma told us growing up, “If you don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say nothing at all”? Why so much negative energy?

Please take into consideration, the author of this article and the Clutch staff. Think of how they feel after putting their hard work in to presenting a topic that their readers wanted? If you truly have a problem with this article remember what Mahatma Gandhi says and be the change you wish to see in this world.

    - So are you going to continue wasting your time negatively commenting on someone who is living their life, or are you going to start living yours?

  4. avatar Sandra says:

    Amen Nicole. Amen.

  5. avatar Amani says:

Jason, I hear what you’re saying, and, for the most part, I agree. However, if you were to go on a site where they typically highlight young, rich, white girls, but one day decided to post on Gabrielle Union or Nia Long, tell me there wouldn’t be a bunch of the readers saying a bunch of hateful things about them.

  6. avatar Court says:

I’ve come to this site a few times but have never commented. The only reason I read the article is because I am a fan of Kim K. I find it ironic that people say she has NO talent. Talent doesn’t only consist of singing, dancing, or rapping. If you are working in corporate America as an attorney do you not have talent in your position? People need to stop being so negative. I think Kim is a beautiful woman who is working as hard as she can to make a great living. If anything we should be giving her props for obtaining things on her own rather than depending on what money her father left behind or what she can get from a man. I feel like the sex tape is grossly used against her and it was her past not to mention she was on the tape with her then boyfriend. Is it nasty to have sex with your boyfriend? People need to just examine themselves and be more positive.

  7. avatar iolastar says:

I like Kim’s style and can we blame her for loving the chocolate? I understand why she’s oblivious to being in an interracial relationship because to her all she see’s is love, I don’t think she sees color I really don’t, but I don’t know that for sure.

Kim & Ray J have transformed their careers after this tape was released. Can we really blame her for capitalizing on her name?

  8. avatar styleosophy says:

Dede, and clutch folks….wow, you all really did the damn thing on this one!!! Although I felt the article was a little light, it did provide an up-date-look at what Kim going on. I respect her as a business woman (and a human being), no matter how she got there.

For all the sisters out there who feel Clutch put this article out there to boost the hits and readership…so what if they did? Did you stop reading yet? Let your boycott speak for you…if the article truly got on your last good nerve, I hope not to see your words gracing the comments section anymore.

Still reading, yea I thought so. My great grandmother would always say “everything was fine but the beans was too salty.” You can lick the plate clean but you still got something to complain about.

Clutch is here not only to inform, but to also make you think. It’s why we ALL read Clutch. But you can’t agree with everything another person says, it would make you a thoughtless reader. Not a thought leader.

@Jason, loved your words of wisdom for the ladies. All you broke, mean-ass single sisters out there need to take his advice. *yea I said it* Black or white, Armenian or alien, Reggie picked his boo already….and it still ain’t you.

Lastly, for everyone who doesn’t agree with the pathway to Kim K’s success, I didn’t see any one of you offer up a better business plan to the same amount of success she has attained. She did it her way. When you can light a candle to her success (perceived or otherwise) maybe then you can throw the rocks in the glass house.

  9. avatar styleosophy says:

And those shoes she has on the top photo are off the chain!!!!

  10. avatar Haj says:

Didn’t we already have a stop the hate in 2008 campaign? Damn people. I mean get rid of the insecurities. How can you hate Kim? She’s such a sweet heart. :o/ And her body is obviously not surgically enhanced, if you watch her show you would know that she has to work out to keep her body in check just like B. Get on your A game then you wont have to worry about others. This coming from a dark skinned black FEMALE.

  11. avatar jamie says:

why is kim k on clutch? There is nothing positive about her; it does not matter how you try to spin it. She has made a name for herself from a porn tape, while black women are degraded 24/7 for being in a music video with a bikini on. Black women are naturally curvacious, but we have been ridiculed since the beginning of time for possessing curves. If we date a athlete or anyone with money we are deemed as gold diggers. If we put fake hair on our heads we are considered ball headed. While someone like Kim K has the fake rear and the weave; she is somehow considered beautiful. The only reason she is with a black man is because white men consider her as trash and will not go any where near her. Don’t believe the hype that her preference are black men, she cannot get a white man, because they think of her as trash. While black people put her on a pedestal, WHAT HAVE KIM K DONE FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY? We are our worst enemy. Clutch must understand we come to this online magazine for positivity not an insult.

  12. avatar Summersun says:

All of the black women who are saying that black women are hating on Kim K are confused, house negro, UNCLE TOMMMMMMSSSSSS!!!!!!

CLUTCH I AM DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, I thought that this blog AKA “magazine” was for to uplift and admire the strength and beauty of black women. you guys just got some over weight cottage-cheese-thighed persian or armenian, or WHATEVER THE HELL SHE IS, posted on the front of your website. this is a slap in the face to every black little girl growing up in our society. By you doing this you are telling little black girls that they are not beautiful enough to be in the media. she only has black friends so that she can uphold the false persona of being “down” with black people. And if you noticed ANYTHING, you would know that Kim K is not on any white websites or blogs, only black websites. The white blogs don’t even waste their time to post Kim K on their site.

So you all may attack me for what I have said because I know all you house negroes want to.

  13. @ SummerSun and Jamie. Thanks for your comment :) Please read both Clutch’s response and my response and you will understand why we decided to interview her – OUR READERS REQUESTED HER. These comments have gotten way out of hand – disrespectful and more. So – I am disappointed myself!

And a slap in the face to little black girls – sis you are reaching…

  14. avatar Imani says:

I still think she’s a sleazy shallow black wanna b
and she must have a financial interest in this magazine.
If the idea is freedom of speech why does clutch erase
comments they don’t like. There are people who have different
opinions like it or not. A lot of black women don’t like non-black
people trying to be black and always dating only black and mixing with
    our black race.
I don’t care the Kim K. or Robin Thicke either

  15. @ Imani – Clutch does erase disrespectful comments — yes. Also, Imani we had server issues the other day and lost comments. Please reference: http://clutchmagonline.com/newsgossipinfo/memo-server-issues/

This is Dede – no one own stock or has “financial interest” in Clutch but me.

  16. avatar Liz says:

I think a lot of people on here are taking this way too far, writing some hateful comments about Kim. She’s still a WOMAN if not a woman of color, and since when do we go around trashing each other in a place where we embrace and celebrate each other? Regardless of color, she’s still human and I am pretty sure everyone on here isn’t a perfect representation of whatever it is they rep (race, color, religion, nationality, etc). Take a chill pill.

Thanks Clutch & Dede for this piece. Clearly some people are pretty sensitive about a white girl with a booty. Geez.

  17. avatar Summersun says:

Clutch you contradict your self.. on internet search engine you are listed:

“Clutch Magazine, an African American women magazine, is the new face of the urban “it” girl with the best in fashion, beauty, life, culture, and more.”

    REMEMBER THIS?

You also contradict yourself by the comment to shine:”Clutch is an online magazine and blog network for women of color — Black Women.”

Armenians were a former republic of the Soviet Union, which as a result makes kim K be a RUSSIAN NOT A WOMAN OF COLOR!!!!!

asian women, indian women, arabian women, hispanic women, and black women are women of color. These are REAL examples of women of color, NOT Kim K

  18. avatar Clutch says:

@ SummerSun/Jamie – Thanks for your comment. Again – we did the interview because our readers asked us too. We can not keep going back and forth on a issue (Kim K.) that we did to satisfy our reader’s request.

Lastly, we are a magazine for women of color – point.blank.period. The women behind the magazine are young black women of color and it’s for women of color. And as a Black/African American woman I like people of all colors and I started Clutch to report on who ever and what ever — no matter what the color of their skin is. Also, just because you are BLACK does not mean you can’t read or see other colors even white people on Black/African American sites. So even if we list that (which we do) we can still cover anybody we want – it’s just presented to African American/Black/Women of Color.

Again – we will not let anyone tell us who we can and can’t cover. Sorry. If you feel like CLUTCH is not the place for you because of this ONE interview out of all the interviews and positive features we have done – then so be it. We will miss you, but we refuse to be disrespected and bullied for doing something that our readers asked us too.

    xoxo,

    Dede
