In Memory of Aaliyah

Tuesday Aug 25, 2009 – by

picture-539Today marks the eighth anniversary of singer Aaliyah’s death. She would have been 30, but age ain’t nothing but a number. Aaliyah was and will always be timeless. She was the rare bird: beautiful, a genuine inside and out, and talented in several disciplines. Not since Diana Ross, who also hailed from Detroit, Michigan, have we seen a musical siren excel at acting, music and choreography.

Hitting the scene in 1994, Aaliyah Dana Haughton’s debut album sold 2 million copies in the United States, spawning the infectious single “Back and Forth” and the Isley Brothers cover “At Your Best.” R. Kelly, who was fast becoming a music legend, produced the album, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts. She was 14.
Soon she left Jive Records and signed to Atlantic, under the tutelage of Missy Elliott and super producer Timbaland. Under such guidance, Aaliyah came into her own. Her videos became choreography clinics, her look grew mature yet retain a youthful appeal.

Her sound wasn’t retro, she wasn’t soul; Aaliyah was all-new. The music world hadn’t seen the likes of her before, with Timbaland’s techno-backed beats her music was trippy, sonically knocking, and untraditional. She released “One in a Million,” which sold over 10 million copies, and turned her into a bonafide rock star overseas. But then the big screen beckoned: She starred in “Romeo Must Die” in 2000, and filmed “Queen of the Damned” shortly after. Her plum role, though, the one that would make her a Hollywood darling, was to be “The Matrix,” where she would play “Zee.” But first, the music called. Her third album “Aaliyah” was a Timbaland fest of raw beats over her high-pitched sighs. The albums hot single? “Rock the Boat.

The video, filmed by Hype Williams, was shot in the Bahamas. As the crew loaded their plane and took off to return to the United States, the plane crashed before even achieving maximum lift. It was August 25, 2001. Aaliyah was dead.

There were several grievances associated with the fatal flight, including an investigation that revealed that the pilot was not licensed to fly the plane. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a report that said stated “the airplane was seen lifting off the runway, and then nose down, impacting in a marsh on the south side of the departure end of runway.”

While Aaliyah may be gone she lives on in her music, videos and in the hearts of her fans. A feature-length biopic, featuring Canadian singer Keisha Chante as Aaliyah, is supposed to be in production this year.

Aaliyah is still one of favorite singers. I remember back in middle school and high school we used to keep Aaliyah on high rotation and actually Aaliyah was my first concert! Of course it was in Detroit. She continued to be a constant on my radio even in college. I remember the day she died like yesterday. I was coming back from class and I heard the news and couldn’t believe it.

I love each and every Aaliyah cd, but the last one was bananas. I really do miss her. RIP.

I’ve always been an Aaliyah fan, but never new all of her true capabilities until after her death. There was always something so different about her that just captivated you. She had a unique voice that got more and more angelic as she got older. I listen to her last album and the emotions that she gives you without even having to scream is amazing. I would say her voice was everything that she was pure, sincere, soothing, and angelic, might i add powerful to cause she could take it there! But yes what i discovered about aaliyah after her death because of youtube and various other researches is that she was taking her time in letting us get to know her, she was gonna do more movies, more music, more captivating dances, and finally let her voice be heard being able to stand with the greats such as whitney, mariah, christina, and even beyonce. But it doesn’t matter what could have been, because what could have been can never be. And now we as her fans have to make sure that the world knows and understands just how talented Baby Girl was! Forever In My Heart! I love you Aaliyah!

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I heard CNN on the radio, report the tragic news! I will never forget that day :(! RIP Aaliyah, you are truly missed!

Fave song: I was 14 when “Back & Forth” came out, and thought the coolest part of the song was when she spelled out her name (Lol, corny I know)! Then later I bought the album, cause you know back then you could buy just one single on tape!Lol I sat on the floor, listening to it on my tape player and would press pause after each word so I could write down the lyrics to all the songs I liked … Ahhh, good memories :)!

I use to wish I had hair like hers, wished I had a smaller bust size like her so I could wear those half tops and wished I could dance like her….. SHE WAS *IT*!! Quality… presence… gifted… lovely!!

    R.I.P. Aaliyah… 8 years later and you’re STILL irreplaceable!

My favorite memory of Aaliyah is when she came to Warehouse music store in L.A., across from the Beverly Center, and signed my album along with the poster that is the picture used for this blog posting. I was in high school and I was a HUGE fan. Her arrival was set for Thursday July 26, 2001 at 4:30 pm. I waiting in line with my cousin sister and best friend from 10 am until she arrived. We were in line before there was a line! She was so sweet, I took a picture of her and a month later she had a tragic plane crash. I memorized the choreography in her videos and everything. One of my life goals was to meet Aaliyah so I always said, if I can do that I can do anything. I will Always Love Aaliyah.
