Introducing “Becky”

Monday Aug 31, 2009 – by

89405262I was recently introduced to “Becky” by a female acquaintance on Facebook.

Who is Becky, you ask?

“Becky” is the name and subject of an infectiously raunchy, testosterone-driven song by Florida-based rapper, Plies.

I had never heard it before, but judging by the title of the track and nature of the artist, I instantly knew it would be explicit to say the least. I later did a Google search so I could take a listen for myself. Unsurprisingly, I was right, and expected every single graphic detail. Here’s a snippet to *ahem* whet your senses.

“Can Miss Becky please raise her hand? I need some of that good head right now. I need that Becky. I’m on this liquor oh so heavy. Befo’ we (expletive), can you neck me? A lil’ head and I am ready. I want yo’ mouth, give me that Becky.”

In case you haven’t figured out from the words head and neck, it’s blatantly obvious he’s expressing his fixation for receiving oral sex. Not to put Plies on Front Street, nevertheless, he is the man behind the “radio-friendly” hit that’s become embedded in our heads due to constant rotation. Either way, this subject isn’t limited to only him, or one particular race, or class of men for that matter. All men have either fantasized about or experienced it hands on, concluding the same sentiments. As I’m writing this, I realize some females may view such a topic as vulgar and demeaning to women. In all actuality, there are many women who are just as obsessed with performing the sexual act. It isn’t strictly for male gratification. Men, as well as a number of women, believe this form of foreplay is absolutely necessary. With that said, this type of intimacy is best when carried out between two consenting adults involved in a healthy relationship. Everything isn’t meant to be explored with everybody.

On a different note, what is so fascinating about Becky? Inevitably, my mind went on a perverted ride into the world of Plies, or should I say, men. Although his version of “Becky” is pretty clear, upon my journey into a man’s domain, I discovered my own interpretation.

Becky is a Caucasian female, notorious for her oral abilities, which sets her apart from the rest. Uninhibited and has no reservations about exploring her sexuality. She is a free-spirit with a bubbly personality. Never defined or pigeonholed by society’s stereotype of her erotic nature as being a whore. She has no qualms about her risqué deeds. She has been dubbed the originator of “freaky,” has the qualities of a porn star, and isn’t ashamed to wear the crown. Wild is her middle name and confidence is her game. She’s no holds barred behind closed doors and will do whatever it takes to please her man. Absolutely nothing is off limits in the bedroom. From role playing to a stripper pole in the basement; nothing is too much. With Becky you never know what to expect. She thrives on spontaneity, often times living out her fantasies of sex in public places. She keeps her man on edge, never boring or becoming complacent with the same old dull routine. Spice is the key ingredient in her relationship. She will try anything once, including domination, as submission is her turn on. Her favorite things are far from Oprah’s list; she packs adult toys and body oils to give her man as a Christmas gift. Let’s just say, Becky is every man’s dream.

As I concluded this voyage, I reentered planet earth with a good understanding as to why “Becky” is so popular. It’s not that she’s better than Black women or any other race of women; she simply gets all the credit. Mind you, I don’t wish to emulate Becky, nor am I suggesting anyone else should. And, I’m not saying Plies was alluding to being with only White women, but it does explain why and where the name derived from. Whether you favor or oppose “Becky,” that is yours and your partner’s personal business. I’m aware not everyone enjoys or engages in such an act, but for the ones that do, we can appreciate “Becky” on another level and identify with these lyrics from a different viewpoint. If you are a freak in the sheets, always remember to be a lady in the streets, and let’s hope Becky does the same.

Ok, I get where you’re coming from. Even thought the song and the artist that made the song are demeaning to womyn, the subject of the song isn’t. “Head” is apart of life and can be liberating in the bedroom for both parties invloved, whether giving or recieving; whatever floats your boat. I firmly believe that there needs to be more blak womyn with a discourse and a passion for conversation about sex. There needs to be more of us that will talk about sex, and make it ok. Everyone else wants to present a distorted view of our sex, we have to do it for ourselves, we must, or we run the the risk of sex being our enemy forever; our dark secret for eternity. So even though, this song is about a white female, I am happy that a blak site like Clutch decided to add discourse to the subject. However, I take issuse with the statements made that , ” Whether you favor or oppose “Becky,” that is yours and your partner’s personal business.” I disagree. Whether someone opposes the idea of “Becky” is a personal decision and idea and has nothing to do with a person’s partner. I also take issue with the statement “If you are a freak in the sheets, always remember to be a lady in the streets, and let’s hope Becky does the same.” The age-old idea of “ladyhood” suggests that womyn must be reserved, desexualized, quiet, and keep up with society’s unfeminist morale standards. Why can’t we be women who show and talk about sexuality anywhere we go, with whom we would like to, whenever we want? What is the opposite of a lady? When we show that we our sexual beings, are we any less than a “lady”? Will we not be desired by men if we do not posses this sought after “ladyhood”?

  3. Funny. I heard this song for the first time on Saturday. It’s disgusting.

”Whether you favor or oppose “Becky,” that is yours and your partner’s personal business.”

This simply means, you should openly discuss oral sex with your partner. If one person in the relationship desires this form of foreplay and the other doesn’t, that could cause problems in the future. Yes, a person is entitled to their own decision on whether or not this is a part of their sex life.

“If you are a freak in the sheets, always remember to be a lady in the streets, and let’s hope Becky does the same.”

And to address the above statement: I don’t have a problem with women talking about sex “anywhere you go.” Talking and acting out sexual behavior in public is two different things. There are some women who will go out with friends and hang out on strips, at clubs, or certain events (i.e. Mardi Gras), etc. showing their goods on the streets, thnking it’s okay. And in my opinion, that isn’t ladylike.

I hope I cleared that up!

For the most part, I agree with you on women needing to have mature conversations about sex, because it is natural and we shouldn’t be ashamed to discuss it! Thanks for reading and commenting!

    Oops,
    I meant …
Talking and acting out sexual behavior in public *are* two different things.

showing their goods on the streets, *thinking* it’s okay …

    Dear Plies,

Although it is your first amendment right to express yourself in any d*mn way you please. Your legacy will be about as significant as your height. I hope you sleep well at night knowing that you’re just another brother offering up the audio safari for white america (the people that have the money to buy this crapola in droves). As expansive as Black music has been its good to know that we can count on you to serve up music about receiving oral sex. I hope you have a daughter.

    Be Blessed.

    HC.

  7. avatar Sasha says:

Its about time rappers moved on from demeaning black women. Maybe ‘other’ races will finally understand what we have been complaining about.

  8. avatar jaden_loves says:

Yea, to each her own, I guess.

  9. Becky is short for Beck-and-Call …….

  10. avatar Brina says:

    LOL @ Sasha

  11. avatar Loni says:

Becky refers to the way white women will perform oral sex without inhibitions. Men like Becky because she will suck them off and wont say no and she will not want anything in return if you get my drift. Thats the meaning of Becky! LOL it is not a term of endearment and he has caught alot of flak from his record label. Sorry huns!

Why is clutch so facinated with the relationship of black men and white women…why don’t you just call up one of your white girlfriends and ask for tips on how to be a better woman…seriously this seems to be what you guys are implying around here…every post is look how much black men love white women and look how cute they are…geesh, this blog use to be a must read but it has seriously downgraded in the last year…you’ve dumb downed the blog in so many ways…

  13. avatar Clutch says:

@ Honee – thanks for your comment. This year we have brought on more topics and writers. I am sorry if it seems like we “dumbed down” – but if you look around and look at the host of articles we feature weekly – we have a pretty good mix.

We are in no way “fascinated” – with BM & WW – it just seems like it since we have had 3-4 articles over the last 4 months that cover it. This article is not about a BM & WW relationship – it’s about a song and assumption about White women.

Lately, it seems like we are either “too smart” or “dumbed down” for some of our readers – we are trying to find out what works for everyone and please all of our readers.

If you have any topics you would like for us to tackle – please email me @ dsutton@clutchmagazine.com

    Best,

    Dede

Honee So not true. Have you been reading Clutch? They have a WHOLE bunch of great articles. It’s sad that you limit your opinion of them to 2-4 articles that are NOT saying what you say that Clutch is implying.

It’s a damn article lighten up!

Interesting, the Plies defitintion must be something new, (no pun intended), “Becky” and “Suzy” just used to be a generic name for white women. The names now meaning oral sex is new. I heard the Plies song (sucks but not because of the topic), and I am not sure if he is just talking about oral sex or oral sex from white women specifically. And after reading some of the comments I am not sure if everyone’s gripe is about oral sex or oral sex from white women.

  16. avatar kboug says:

I agree with this author that.. there are many women who do love doing this sexual act..and that more black women should embrace their sexuality…but let us all forget that Plies is NOT a Black woman..but a disgusting rapper who includes explicit lyrics to be demeaning to all women

  17. avatar Lita says:

Plies raps like a 5 yr old honor roll student. You cannot tell he went to college. This song does not spark discussion about fellatio but about how his raps are like dirty Dr Seuss stories. So predictable but at the same time so damn elementary. Boy Stop. Music has lost its soul.

  18. avatar Nikia says:

I’m a Plies fan. It’s a shame all his singles center around sex when he truly has a range of topics that take over his cds. From “100 years” to “runnin my mama crazy” to “somebody loves you” to “family straight” etc etc. But it’s the sex songs that his label pushes for radio. With that said, and being a fan who keeps up with him, I have seen recent youtube footage where he admitted to never being with a white woman before…Also in an interview he basically said the name of the song stems from them being the ones who made “head” known for a lack of better words….NOT because they are the best at it….

  19. avatar Nikia says:

and Lita, Plies DID indeed go to college: two different universities before dropping out his sophomore year, which is something he’s made known to be one of his biggest regrets. I too however wished his lyrics were more advanced like that of his speaking voice because when he does interviews, he knows how to cut that slang/southern drawl out and actually talks with sense. He catches a lot of flack for that as well because you have some ppl who say he’s not being “real” because he sounds proper and well spoken on the radio interviews but “stupid” on wax…
