Bumble Bee Lovin’

Tuesday Oct 13, 2009 – by

Sometimes I don’t even know why I turn on the TV. Even with all the channels cable provides, it’s like I can feel my brain decaying while watching the drab, predictable content and imagery that comprises at least 90% of current programming. Hence, you could imagine my surprise when I saw 2 of my favorite actors, Gabrielle Union and John Cho (Harold from Harold & Kumar) getting hot and heavy during the second episode of the ABC’s new sci-fi drama “FastForward.”

That’s right, Bumble Bee Lovin, synonymous with Blasian, denotes a union between Black and Asian (no pun intended, Gabby). Gabrielle plays a fierce attorney who’s engaged to an FBI (enter John Cho). Granted, I was totally baffled as to the plot during last week’s episode, but “stayed tuned” due to my initial disbelief of what was being portrayed.

Why is that, you ask? Well, it’s not often we see that the Bumble Bees in real life or on screen – although they do exist (holla if you’ve gotten your buzz on a time or two). Kudos to ABC for pushing the envelope and implanting some avant-garde type ish into our minds for a change. Incidentally, it doesn’t hurt that I have a school-girl crush on John Cho (I love me some fine ass Korean dudes).

In the US, we all tend to live by such vacuous limitations, and receive prompt condemnation once we step out of (the color) line. Love happens, and it’s high time this fact is reflected in the media. Black women are attracted to, and by, all types of fellas. Who knows, we may be witnessing is a small step towards progress. I look forward to the day when such matters are commonplace. In the meantime, I’m gonna enjoy the pollination while it lasts.

Wow! Great article and I agree 100%, bring on the pollination, lol! Wish I had known about that episode. I definitely would have watched it. I guess it’s on to Youtube and Hulu from here! Lol :-)

My friends give me weird looks when I point out Asian men I find attractive. There seems to be this odd skepticism that a) I, a black woman, can find Asian men attractive and b) that attractive Asian men exist. Anyone who has ever watched an Asian drama can definitely attest to the fact that FINE ASS Asian men are out there. All you have to do is have open eyes, an open mind and an open heart.

I honestly might start watching Flash Forward just to see John and Gabrielle together.

great piece. Great to see Fast Forward stretching the envelope so to speak. Haven’t seen the show, but might tune in. Thanks Clutch as always

  8. I love this article, Sky! I actually interviewed John Cho a few years ago, and discovered that he is a very progressive and politically charged actor (rare among stars). Thanks for making me aware, and I will definitely post your link. You have some good stuff here, girl.

I for one have always had a crush on some asian men i.e. Russell Wong, Lee Byung Hun, and the original Bruce Lee. There is another guy I’m in looooove with, but I can’t remember his name & I’ve been searching google & bing for an hour now to find him. I will come back bc his pic is on my home computer – teehee!
My last co-worker crush was on a asian guy that we’ve grown to become really great friends. I’ll be glad when love is commonplace, not color!

Yeah, it was ‘interesting’…but not very believable.
I think if they’d chosen a slightly older Asian guy (this one looks like he’s 20) then it would have been cool.
But Gabrielle looks SO much older than him (and that’s saying a LOT…cause Gabby don’t look a day over 28) and it just doesn’t work.
    FAIL.

  12. avatar ms. complexity says:

If it were Gabby and Russell Wong…then hells YES.

  13. avatar Monica says:

That’s what I’m talking about!!!I’ve been getting my buzz on with my asian husband for 5 years now, and I can’t even express how excited we were to see a BW/AM couple on T.V.!!!!

  14. avatar Rhue b says:

WILL DEMPS and DANIEL HENNEY!!!! No one can deny their looks! lol

  15. avatar Asia says:

I’m glad they show Blasian love. People act like its taboo but its not. There are many Asian men who love black women and many black men and women who love them some Asians. So thank God they are finally putting it out there.
