Beauty Q&A: Healthy Hair Edition

Monday Jan 25, 2010 – by

1. I have heard a lot about Carol’s Daughter but have never tried it. Is there a must have product from their line that I should try? Carol’s Daughter is a favorite from the backstage of a video shoot to the dorm room halls of college campuses. It’s a favorite because the products are all top of the line in quality plus the products really deliver. You know when you buy a product from their line that you won’t be disappointed.

If you’re new to the line I would suggest trying Healthy Hair Butter by Carol’s Daughter ($10, carolsdaughter.com) as a way to get introduced to the line. It’s creamy blend of essential oils of lavender, rosemary, and ylang-ylang promote general hair health for all hair types. The luxurious butter softens the hair, minimizes breakage, and conditions with nourishing shea butter, almond oil, and cocoa butter. I love the intoxicating smell and how hydrated my hair feels.

2. I have decided to stop flat ironing my hair and wear it curly this year. What are some really good curly hair products? That sounds like a good plan. If you condition your hair and use healthy hair products then by the end of the year your hair should be in amazing shape. And I think it’s wonderful that you are looking for products specifically designed for curly hair. Hair that is curly has special needs and usually needs extra moisture and conditioning. But finding a product that is a good fit for your hair might take some playing around. Before investing a ton of money in one product see if they have small sized versions so you can check to see if it does what you need it to do for your hair. I would start with the kit from Ouidad. The Ouidad Curl Essentials Starter Kit ($25, sephora.com) is a travel-sized quartet of curl-perfecting essentials. You get products that cleanse, condition, fight frizz, and revive your curls perfectly. Curls will be left bouncy and defined

3. I put a lot of heat on my hair and need something to protect it. Do you know of any light hairdress? Having hair treatments that use chemicals and using heat on your hair can cause spilt ends, breakage and dry scalp. So if you use chemicals or heat in your hair you have to find a good hairdress to help protect it. One of my favorites is Mizani Rose H2O Conditioning Hairdress ($17.99, target.com). This conditioning hairdress is enriched with special oil and botanical extracts which aid in revitalizing the hair and scalp. Its rich formula replenishes moisture and adds a soft, silky sheen to dull, dry hair. Rose H20 Hairdress contains a unique blend of ingredients that helps prevent damage while ensuring shiny, healthy looking hair. Plus its aromatic fragrance promotes a sense of well being as its soothing properties help prevent split ends and alleviate dry scalp caused by heat styling and chemical treatments.

4. My hair is bored with my current shampoo/conditioner. I think it no longer responds to it. Are there any amazing shampoo/conditioners for women of color that you can suggest that I try in place of my current products? It’s a good idea to switch up products every so often. I have found that sometimes my hair doesn’t’ get the same effects as it once did from certain products. If you are looking to switch I suggest trying Pantene Pro-V Relaxed & Natural Intensive Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner ($4.99 each, cvs.com).  Made specifically for women of color, they work to help create strong healthy hair that shines. The Pro-Vitamin shampoo is enriched with amino-proteins that penetrate the hair and contains amino-proteins that are naturally found in the hair but are gradually lost. It also is specially designed to protect hair against damage to keep it healthy-looking and fortifies hair with essential oils to keep it strong, soft, manageable and shiny. The conditioner is specially designed to protect hair against damage to keep it healthy-looking. It works hard to fortify hair with essential oils to keep it strong, soft, manageable and shiny. The duo works great for chemically relaxed, pressed or natural hair.

As a young lady of color, to others, I really was pondering if all African American females have curly hair? Or rather, the chromosome makeup. (Judging by the constant photo-art of females with really defined hair used on Clutch-Mag). I know that there is variation of hair types. My hair is curly, but tightly coiled/kinky. while my mum’s hair is more medium sized a little more defined compared to mine. Does using pictures similar to the very first one above, more appealing to the eye?

Hi Mimi – we show a host of women with all types, textures and styles for photos on Clutch. No texture or style is better than the other to us.

Feel free to look around :)

      Best,

Kinda weird you used a picture of a girl with a weave for a story about healthy hair? Maybe that is her real hair but it looks fake

    • Clutch says:

Hi Ladies – the photo was just used as a cover/picture for the article, not to represent the products and advice in the article. Just a picture for the piece.

      Thanks!

I recently decided to have natural hair about a year and some ago. Pantene Pro-v relaxed and natural is AWESOME! The conditioner works great..leaves my hair really soft. I will definitely try the Ouidad because I have a problem keeping my hair moisturized when i leave it curly. Thanks for the tips.

  4. Tiffany says:

ugh… Carols Daughter products are highly overrated. They are expensive and the ingredients aren’t even that great. Their customer service sucks too.

Ouidad and pantene relaxed and natural seem to have sulfates and other ingredients not good for maintaining coily hydrated hair.

I also agree with Serenia02, the stock photo kind of throws me off, lol you should have switched it with the photo from ‘The “it” Girl” article. Now that looks like a healthy head of hair!

  5. Adriene says:

I really really really wanted to like Carol’s Daughter products, but her hair products do nothing for my hair! They smell wonderful, but in terms of conditioning and mositurzing they are lackluster at best! :-( I would never recommend her hair products to anyone!

    • Meena Tutu says:

Totally agreed! I felt bad for thinking ill of Carol’s Daughter because everyone swears by it, but the products leave my hair either dried out or greasy. I use coconut oil and aloe vera gel as a styling creme — and its perfecto!

  6. Als Simmons says:

Giovanni Organics shampoos, conditioners and leave-ins are amazing. Oyin handmade is also good.

  7. Eva says:

I love Carol’s Daughter….hello, the hair milk is amazing.

  8. melissa says:

I have learned to watch out for any silicone related ingredients… they’re horrible for our hair. Pantene and Ouidad have them. :(
I’ve been using Aveda Be Curly shampoo and conditioner. And, Blended Beauty “Curly Frizz Pudding” for styling. Changed my life!

    • Ticia says:

Noooo! really? Is pantene that bad? yikes. I actually swear by their curly shampoo and mousse because it seems to work wonders. Someone please tell me WHY it’s so wrong for my hair when my hair always comes out looking so right! I’ve heard this argument before just never found anything that gave a good reason as to why its wrong

  9. melissa says:

Silicone (Dimethicone is what you often see) coats the hair with a thin layer of a plastic like substance. This smooths the hair and seals in moisture. BUT, it doesn’t wash out easily… and ultimately prevents moisture from getting IN.
When I used to use silicone products, I found that my hair was sort of “addicted” to the products. If I used something else, or went with out, it was as dry as STRAW. I ended up cutting my hair “Halle” short to start over. Now, I’m in LOVE with my hair.

But, WHO AM I to say change your routine. If its working for you, then stick with it. (o:

I really like Carol’s Daughter body gels & butters – The scents are amazing! However the shampoo & conditioner works so-so on my family’s various hair textures…. What I love for my hair now is the process the salon uses on my hair now (which is natural)… I first get an hot oil treatment & scalp massage, an incredible scrubbing wash & deep conditioning, finished with blow drying & styling using an amazing all natural product called Str8 Away Soufle by Philadelphia salon owner Anika Lee Thompson… The product allows your hair to transition to straight, naturally, without chemical processing… And not just straight for one day, but until you wash again, weeks later…. Also, check out this website called Tightly Curly – http://www.tightlycurly.com/welcome/
She has really great tips on home care of natural hair, as well as a host of products best suited for curly/kinky hair types.

nothing softens my hair like Organic Root Stimulator Shea Butter Hair & Scalp Softening Lotion. It can be hard to find but worth the search.

    Hey DeDe and Clutch team,

Long time reader. But I wanted to know if these companies paid y’all to advertise? Pantene for ‘Women of Color’ is a terrible choice for our hair type. I used it for a few years and now notice the difference when I switched to organic shampoos.

Also, Carol’s Daughter isn’t for every hair type. I bought a few products and will only stick with the skin creams – as their hair products aren’t all that great for my hair (I have very long relaxed hair that still tends to get frizzy).

  14. Clutch says:

    Hi Ms. Complexity –

How are you sweetie!? No they didn’t. Only people that pay are the ads you see running on the site. As you know, we try different products and our Beauty Editor tried the products and these are her reviews. I think the outcome of a product is just dependent on someone’s hair/texture – because I used Pantene and CD and it’s works great for me as well.

I hope this helps! If you have any product review suggestions – make sure you email her @ nmitsch@clutchmagonline.com.

  15. I was never really in the love with Carol’s Daughter. I really just loved Lisa Price, the packaging, and their stores. I would nearly faint every time I saw the display at Sephora. Finally, a section in there purposely for me.

However, the hair products are very overpriced, and don’t get the job done like my own mixes I make in the kitchen. I think people who like them don’t know what else is out there.

Once I tried other natural brands, I realized that Carol’s Daughter was a few slices short of a sandwich!

  16. Beauty care profession really a nice job. salon and makeup also an important issue a beautician and the customer. All looking to be nice but I think only one bad side is excessive/wrong use of cosmetics and makeup accessories may be harmful.

Healthy Hair Butter by Carol’s Daughter works great on my twists. I was impressed so I spent $85 for bag of goodies which included the Milk, shampoo and some other products that I can not remember the name of . . . one was a leave in conditioner which turned my new twists that took me over 2 hours to do into one large afro puff. . . I returned them all. After using the products my hair became very hard and dry. I think most of the products work on hair like Halle or Jada, however, the Healthy Hair Butter I would buy again.
