Inside the Boutique of Karen’s Body Beautiful

Monday Feb 15, 2010 – by

You can not log-on to a natural hair community website without finding a discussion on Karen’s Body Beautiful aka KBB – products. Her innumerous fans post page after page of KBB praises – talking about the overall quality, scent, moisturizing properties, product versatility (i.e. using the Hair Milk as a deep conditioner), and natural ingredients. As the name denotes, Karen’s Body Beautiful not only provides natural hair products, but products for your face and body, for the entire family.

“My mission is to promote a healthy, holistic approach to beauty by creating handmade hair, body and bath products made from a diverse selection of the highest quality natural ingredients from around the world. I firmly believe that health, beauty and wellness are entwined and so nature supplies us with all of the ingredients we need to create products to enhance your natural beauty. “- Karen Tappin Saunderson – of Karen’s Body Beautiful

Karen Body’s Beautiful Boutique and soon- to-come spa is located in Brooklyn, New York. But no need to worry if you can’t make it to BK, because you can experience her wonderful natural goodies with a few keystrokes by visiting the store website – karensbodybeautiful.com. Her most popular hair products are Hair Milk and Luscious Locks Moisturizing Hair Mask. The most popular scent is Pomegranate Guava.

Karen Tappin Saunderson’s hair story…
At around the age 13 or 14 – as most young girls do, Karen began getting interested in boys. She noticed that the boys were paying more attention to the other girls – the ones with perms – so she wanted one as well, but her mother was not having it. At that time Karen viewed natural hair, like her mother’s signature teenie-weenie-afro, as a style for older people. So although her mother told her she could not get a perm, Karen went behind her parents’ back and put one in herself.

Years later, her soon-to-be husband and Co-Founder of KBB, Damani Saunderson, and his family and friends, influenced Karen to stop perming her hair. Karen noticed that his family and circle of friends all wore their hair natural and it was beautiful. One day when she announced to him that she was going to get her hair “done”, he asked her, “Why?” That “why” although it was just one word, it carried a lot of weight with it. Karen began to ask herself “why” too.

Why do I perm my hair? Why alter my hair at (literally) all costs? What message am I telling the world by covering my natural hair with perm? Karen also felt that she was damaging her hair at all costs. She has since been natural for 10 years. Karen says that she understands that not everyone wants to wear their hair natural, but advises women to seriously ask themselves the question “why?”

“Can you look in the mirror and be happy with yourself 100%?” she asks. “Be true to yourself, do what’s most comfortable for your lifestyle, she added.

Karen’s Boutique …
Deciding at an early age that she wanted to be her own boss, at the age of 17 Karen was the CEO of her own mail order business, selling care packages. Karen’s Delicious Deliveries provided gourmet food gift baskets. Karen began paying attention to the labels of the items that were sold as a part of the baskets. As she read and studied the ingredients, she found that many of them were made with potential harmful chemicals such as carcinogens. She began replacing the items with natural ones, dropped the gourmet food and KBB was born.

In February of 2004, Karen and her husband opened Karen’s Body Beautiful, and after having to get up hours early before the shop opened to make her products in her home and then transport them to the shop on a daily basis, they added a kitchen within the shop. “I decided, why not work at work?” Karen shared.

Karen and her husband are also adding a spa to the back half of the shop that will offer manicures, pedicures, waxing, massages and body treatments, both for men and women. KBB is also planning a completely new look as far as product packaging – “It will be really fly and gorgeous,” Karen assures.

As far as switching to natural products Karen suggests finishing the products you have and as you run out, replacing them with natural ones. “Once you use them you will realize your hair and skin will benefit so much. You will see the difference in your life and your health. You’ll get inherent nutrients for your hair and body just as you do when you eat healthier. To me, it’s a rational decision,” she said.

Thanks Clutch for always introducing us to something new! Ever since I read your article, I YouTubed Karen’s Body Beautiful and was happy with my results…always can count on my Youtube Goddesses to keep it real with me. She has legions of fans which makes me yearn to try out her products so I can put my bid in too. What’s also cool is that her store is in Brooklyn which is just a car drive away! Love love love KBB products!!! I have stockpiled the deep condish and hair milk for my hair’s winter survival. KBB has the BEST shampoo I have ever used in my life. It is so moisturizing and cleansing. How often can you say a shampoo is MOISTURIZING???? The Juicy Shampoo bars are to die for. A dime size amount lathers my whole head! The hair butter–or should I say BUTTAH!–literally melts the dryness away. The hair mask is nothing to play with. It leaves the hair feeling strong!! lol And the scents…omg! I keep meaning to switch them up, but I have yet to grow weary of the Lavendar/Vanilla. It has become my swan song. I have only 2 regrets: 1) I don’t live in New York, and 2) I waited so long to try KBB!
I normally don’t get giddy over hair products, but I am really amazed by the results I get with KBB. Please, Karen, never change. I am a customer for life!

LOVE LOVE LOVE KBB! Came in the freezing rain from Chicago and was greeted by two awesome ladies (and an adorable baby) who helped me stock up on goodies to take back home. I wish there was a KBB here in Chicago!! Or at least a supplier!

  13. avatar Elaina says:

I love the deep conditioner & the hair oil. They are staples of mine.
However, I do hope that KBB gets it together in terms of product shipments. If an item is not in the box, do not include it on the invoice. Also, if a customer orders a product in a particular scent & that scent is not available, KBB needs to notify the customer–don’t just send the customer an alternate scent.

  14. avatar Imani says:

Though the products are excellent and have helped my hair grow long and strong, Karen’s superior customer service is by far my favorite part of KBB. Whenever I call with a question, there’s always a human being on the line to help solve my problem. My products have always come in a timely fashion, and been just as described. I haven’t had a problem with any order, but if something were ever incorrect, I know I can just contact KBB and have the issue easily remedied. I love this store and will continue to support this professional, service oriented sister’s business.

  15. avatar Jacky says:

I really need to try this stuff. I’ve been hearing about KBB for the longest. Anyone have 4b type hair and still highly recommend it??

    • avatar Loving says:

I have not tried KBB yet as a 4B natural, but if you are 4B and looking for a great moisturizer I suggest Qhemets Biologics natural hair care line, the Heavy Amla and Olive Cream is very creamy and moisturizing for this hair type.

  19. avatar Becky says:

I am addicted to KBB. All I can say is WOW! Allher stuff is phenomenal for my naturally thick and coarse texture.Thank you very much Karen’s Body Beautiful for blessing us !!!:)

I went natural late November 2009. I tried going natural before but my hair was dry, lifeless that i ended up getting a relaxer. I had been lurking all the forums, naturallycurly, longhaircare, etc. and it was overwhelming. Some of those women have beautiful long natural hair and it seemed attainable for me, i got excited. The con of being in those forums are that those women are product junkies, and i was slowly becoming one too. I went to popular brands with curling custards, to brands that made my hair soft, but still dry. I decided to try Karens and I hoped it worked because my husband REFUSED to spend much more on hair products and hear me complain about how it’s not making my hair feel how i want it to.

I tried Karen’s hair products on both my hair which is 3c/4a/4b and my son’s which is 4a and it was a dream. as soon as i put the shampoo in the hair and washed it out i can say i saw a difference. her deep conditioner detangled my son’s hair like a dream. the hair milk and butter and cream are wonderfully scented and great. Her products are so great let’s put it this way, I started spending over $100, and now I am over $300. A little brash yes but I cannot live without her products. For years I had been discouraged by salons for going natural, “You’re hair will only grow to a certain level and never longer it has memory” “you’re hair is going to look like Esther Rowe, it’s nappy” “you need a relaxer, we won’t do your hair”. Well now i do my own and it feels better than EVER! using her products my hair has grown, is moisturized and now healthy. Please never change your products and shipping policies and employees, you’re products saved my hair.
