Teairra Mari’s Sponsor is the New Theme Song for Pimps & Ho’s

Monday Mar 15, 2010 – by

In her newest single “Sponsor”, Teairra Mari decides to speak out for the full fledged and would-be gold diggers out there who choose to use their assets as currency for obtaining and maintaining the ‘good life.’ According to Ms. Mari:

Yeah, to fill up a drink for me
Yeah, to fill up my tank for me
Yeah, to put something in the bank for me
I got myself a sponsor

There’s no doubt that to this pop tune doesn’t represent the true intentions of real life women who fall under the category of the kept trophy chick, goldigger and/or high priced ho. Women such as these are working women indeed if one takes into account the many sacrifices made by one who chooses to prostitute herself for material gain.

In this uninspiring, contemporary track, Teairra Mari seems to take seriously the often shallow, empty and immature wishes of the sponsored whose youth, appearance and lack of substance transforms them from a real live human being to an animated blow up doll.

Yeah, yeah, he put them low profiles on my car
He treat me to a pedi plus manicure
Anything that I ask for from my sponsor
He go and bu-bu-buy, buy

Listening to the lyrics to this track is a lot like watching a lost episode of The Chappelle Show.

He must be a rapper, baller, doctor
Dentist, corner-boy, cook, chef, chemist
Yeah, I don’t even care
Just as long as he don’t say bu-bu-bye, bye

This may sound like sheer comedy to the sound of mind, however when watching the “Sponsor” video, it’s akin to a joke gone horribly wrong as Mari seriously projects the role of the mindless hoochie whose only concern is that her well-off man doesn’t leave her high & dry (and broke too).

Featuring run of the mill pimp rhetoric by both Gucci Mane and Soulja Boy, it’s disappointing to observe Teairra Mari represent those women who in part represent some of the ugliest presumptions about our gender. This prostitute manifesto titled “Sponsor” serves to paint women as weak, superficial, materialistic and quite frankly, stupid:

He ain’t no square, he just like to share
In love with the tipper throwing hundreds in the air
Throw some over here
And Louis, drop the Louis, put the Louis in my lap, damn

There’s absolutely no need to celebrate chicks whose intelligence is minimized and misshapen to meet the sexual needs of some dude for the purpose of using him as a living, breathing ATM. While no one can fault her for putting out one more “independent woman” theme song, it’s safe to say that this topic is counterproductive, stale and with women outnumbering men in the workforce, highly out of date.

It’s understandable that Teairra Mari’s long overdue album “At That Point” may be in need of a little life support but touting womanhood as a crew of zombies mindlessly consuming “blue medallions”, “mani-pedi’s” and all the other trappings of the so-called high life is not the move. Goldigging is not a worthy profession, goal or attribute. It’s a woman’s reaction to a deep sense of insignificance and a failure to see her own worth beyond her ability to play dress up and perform sexual favors – on demand. It may seem like everyday is Christmas but the goldigger’s life is an empty existence. She lacks authentic freedom, and is under the ownership of her Sponsor until he moves onto the next plaything. She has no accomplishments of her own and much like the average stripper or streetwalker, has a limited amount of time to exploit her youthful looks to her advantage before she falls permanently off the shelf.

To make a tribute song for that misguided population of women (and the men who sponsor them) is a slap in the face to independent women out there who are actually running sh*t, and an even bigger offense to impressionable young women who have the displeasure of being influenced by such garbage.

well i hardly take any hip-hop videos seriously these days – both the independent woman anthems and such as this….(i’m going to refrain from the “back in the day” comments…because there is some quality out there now…you just won’t hear it on the radio).

….my problem is WHY did she have to borrow moves (and probably spandex outfits) from Beyonce? Give me an hour and latte and I could probably match her every dance move to a previous Beyonce video. This was an example of FLAGRANT copy-catting – forget about being embarrassed about needing a sponsor…basing your next big career move on producing a Beyonce-wannabe video should be enough to send Ms. Mari into hiding.

  2. avatar Sweetheartlove says:

I actually bump this song but I understand it is shallow and when I hear it I think that she needs to be her own sponsor and at the end of the video it does show her black card which makes me thinks its a play on words…its catchy and hopefully its a hit for her despite the shallow nature. :/

  3. avatar amber says:

this is why i don’t listen to hip hop (mainstream) .

  4. avatar Mona says:

She seems to make “mindless” hoochie music. I remember some “No Daddy” song from her that alluded to her being promiscuous b/c she had not Father. If she isn’t an indication of why Men need to hug and guide their daughters I don’t know what is.

I agree this is just entertainment. But her image thus far is a young, fast, hoodrat. She needs a female mentor or college tuition.

    • avatar Jazz says:

^^^ I remember that song too. It was HORRIBLE! So really, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised at this “Sponsor” song *SMH*

  5. avatar MUSIC SETS TREndS says:

Most of today’s mainstream music is TRASHY and has NO SUBSTANCE!! – i think certain songs/artists should come with an intelligence advisory!…i.e. if you are not intelligent and can’t think for yourself or decipher your lane from whats entertainment, you need not listen! LMFAO!

    • avatar Pharow says:

What about the kids who have this music forced on them 24hr a day. How should they decipher whats entertainment and whats not and don’t give me its the parents job B.S,we know that. I may be wrong ,but it sound like you don’t have kids. For the record I like the song the track ,melody, and the concept is hot but my 9yr old son and 10yr daughter and I will not be able to connect with this song driving up the cost bumping sponsor no sir I don’t think so, and its to bad there’s a lot of songs out there like that today where the beat melody and or flow are hot ,but subject mater is shallow. I have more to say on this topic but on a positive note, its good to see everyone sharing there view’s, it paints a larger picture for me. Constructive dialog and advice no criticism here!

Thanks Guys and Thank you Miss Teairra Mari

    • avatar Pharow says:

My bad i read you comment wrong. Its funny but that might work

  6. avatar C.J. says:

#1…This song is VERY catchy but that doesn’t mean that it’s right.

When I first heard it, I couldn’t believe the words that the young lady was singing. The word “Sponsor” is what is bringing the negative connotation. I don’t need anybody to “sponsor” me. If you are willing to have a major male figure head in your life (i.e. Father, Brother, Uncle, Boyfriend, Husband) that is “providing” you with assistance as far as taking care of bills and etc, then acknowledge them as a provider not a SPONSOR….

I don’t understand how some women can claim to be “Independent” but then search for some man to be their “Sponsor”? What’s so independent about that? Is that what you call taking care of yourself? Yes these songs are in all fun in games but what do you want to portray to your daughters, sisters, and nieces?

  7. avatar iLL-Legal says:

Yall are taking this song wayyyyy to serious, if you don’t like the message in the song, don’t listen to it, plain and simple. You guys are acting like you are being forced to listen to it. For you mothers, if you don’t want you children growing up being gold-diggers teach them not to be.

    • avatar K says:

Typical commentary. I guess you think media imagery doesn’t affect children and that parents can be around their children 24/7 to control their thoughts, too, right? It’s not like kids actually watch TV or hang out with OTHER kids who will offer a negative influence or anything like that, right? I mean, jeez, OBVIOUSLY kids think the advice of their parents is SOOOOOOOO cool to follow that they will sacrifice popularity in order to agree with mommy. Man, you really understand how the world works!

  8. avatar Aura J says:

    Tiearra Marie

    a. needs Jesus
    b. a deep soul -cathartic session with a licensed therapist
    c. a new song- writer, and if she’s writing this mess. She needs to put the pen down.
    d. a new choreographer –you better fire that Beyonce copy-catting choreographer. Lets see something fresh.

This song just irked the mess out of me. I’m not going to lie, the first time I heard it, I was dancing to it. But as I listened to the lyrics my musical enjoyment came to a * SCREECHING* halt. Look, I know there’s a group of women out their trickin’ their coochies for the high life but seriously–did you need to make a proud anthem song about it? Gold-digging used to be something shameful, at least, yea some would do it but they wouldn’t put it on front street. The reason I really hate this song is that I know a bunch of chicken heads are front and center, snapping their fingers in the urrr, waving and singing, being like yea..proud to be sponsored. Lord Jesus help em. And help Tiearra Marie to realize that there are better ways to live this life, and better topics to sing about and still cash them dollars. Grow up!

  9. avatar Todd Michaels says:

This song simply from a musical stand point is horrible. Forget about the content for a moment, but this new sound is not “R+B” yall and it never will be. Once again, this is just further proof in my eyes of the systematic dismantling of black music. Think about it, would Anita Baker, Alicia Myers, Janet Jackson, Aretha Franklin, or any successful “grown” self-respecting black artist sing this song? Trust me, it’s piss poor, non-instrumental, non-melodic, poor content (and I agree that the content is just in poor taste) and over-sexed “music” dare I say like this, that is responsible of the super plunge in record sales and the over all viability of the music industry. What type of legacy does this young lady want to leave with her music? What lessons is she teaching young girls? It’s NEVER just entertainment. This is just bad all the way through.

  10. I would like to take this time out to personally thank Teairra Mari for adding yet another negative blow to the stigma associated with black women, especially those hailing from Detroit.

Oh, you don’t know what I mean?

Aretha Franklin – Has an attitude.
Martha Reeves – Bad councilwoman, has an attitude
    Diana Ross – …we all saw Dreamgirls…
    Christine Beatty – Kwame’s Mistress
Monica Conyers – Part of the whole City Council Scandal

…like we really needed this. Thanks for the bad publicity and the lack of originality.

As for the song…it is my guilty pleasure due to the catchiness, but seriously, I don’t agree with any of the lyrics. But hey, who am I to say that every woman needs to be independent. I’m sorry, some women just don’t have the brain power to do anything on their own (think: Paris Hilton). After all, every woman is not made the same, so some “occupations”, so to speak, are more fitting for some than others.

And there shouldn’t be any complaints about these gold digging heifers taking good men, because honestly, a truly good man would want a woman with substance. Let them take the overbearing rich assholes that like to berate women in front of their friends and have a personal groupie.

  11. avatar royaltee says:

I fyou find a man that is financially sound, has a good job treats you right and provides for you he is not a sponsor he is a good man….period. Men are supposed to be providers and take carte of the home and take care of his family not just a sponsor. He should be your lover, friend confidant partner and just as he provides for you you should provide him with the nuturing, respect, love and honor he deserves not just sitting around trying to spend up all his money on materialistic things. Teairra Mari is young, I give her the benefit of the doubt and say she doesn’t no any better and she wants the fame so bad she’ll sing what ever they hand her as long as it catchy and can get her some radio play

  12. avatar AG says:

The song is catchy, which is probably what she was going for, to garner attention to her no-existent career, and boy did she succeed! (Hence, this post and every commenter sooooo angry at her for setting us po’ black folk to slavery! * scrunchy mad face!*

I think this is blown sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo out of proportion it is not even funny! Lol If you do not like the song, don’t listen to it! If it comes on the radio, turn it! If it comes on the television, turn it! Simple. So is Clutch going to write an article about every song they don’t like? No one is forcing anything on any of us, so please act like it, pretty please, and stop giving this girl this much attention over a song you don’t like. If you gave this much attention over a song you dont like, I’d love to see the article about the ones you dont like.

And yes, it is entertainment. Nothing these celebrities do impact my decision making. I am a grown woman. More than likely these celebrities did not sign up to be our role models, since when did we give them so much responsibility? Why are they criticized if they dont make a song to your pleasing, because your daughter may hear it? If you raise your own children, they wouldn’t listen to this bullcrap in the first place. it is not there job to do so. Everything is not so literal, it is entertainment, for us to enjoy, and if we dont enjoy it, you already know what to do. Not take time out of your day (when you probably should be working) to rag on this nobody about this hideous song.

    • avatar Hmmmmm says:

Or if you don’t like an article /comments on an online magazine, just skip to the next. Simple…. :)

You said it perfectly: Nothing these celebrities do impact YOUR decision making. You are a grown woman… What about the young impressionable minds? Our comments are mostly for them. Unfortunately, young women do not always get the right education at home – hence the need for mentoring…

  13. avatar K says:

This crap is disgusting. Anyone else see the effed upness in the fact that in Soulja Boy’s briefcase there’s a magazine reading, “Role Model”????

  14. avatar Crys Mack says:

Girls who have a father at home don’t NEED sponsors!

Mama taught me NOT to take expensive gifts from men/boys unless I was ready and willing to trade my goodies for them. NOthing is Free! She doesn’t get into all the s*ckin’ and f*ckin’ that comes along w/ a sponsorship. She doesn’t talk about the control these men feel they have over their…pets.

Drinks at the club is one thing…rent/cars/clothes/upkeep is another. There IS always a price to pay.

  15. avatar Athena says:

“Artists” like this are the reason why I don’t listen to the radio anymore. And when I do, it just makes me miss all of the black female artists from the 90s who were talented and versatile.

  16. avatar copelli21 says:

Ok, these young chickies are mistaking hookering as some type of empowerment. What!?

Nobody is “sponsoring” you without getting something in return. Let’s not fake the funk. You are surrendering your body, control and a myriad of other factors to this “sponsor”/pimp/sugar-daddy…..whatever you want to call him.

These chicks need to stop trying to glamourize this situation and call what it is. Hoeing and Pimping. You can try and pretty it up with Louis Vitton if you want to, that doesn’t change the exchange.

If you want to be empowered….then be your own woman and get your own ish. Sponsor your own dang self.

    • avatar Jenee says:

I think people are misunderstanding my point:

I DECIDE TO find POSITIVITY in this song:
because I am not living a life of negativity.

I agree with other comments, it’s about Balance and Intelligence.

As an Intelligent Woman, I can find the Positivity in these ” Hoochie” songs,
For Example, Beyonce’s “Ego” could be seen as super sexual, however I attach her lyrics about the power of her man’s sexuality to the infinite and awesome power of the Universe/God.

      It’s all about perception.

  17. avatar AG says:

    @Hmmmmm,

And it’s even more simplier to not respond to a comment you dont agree with (for your future reference)! Lol!
By the way, I have a 4 year old son. I raise him, teach him right from wrong as he is growing up in the church in a Christian family. MTV does not raise my son, do they raise yours? Is that why your sooooooo MAD *angry face* when an artist makes a song NOT to your lil’ liking? Oh God forbid!!!!!!!! Hell hath froze over!!!!!! *faints*

*Gets up* again, why are you giving these artists so much responsibility? Yes the minds of kids are impressionable but at the end of the day, my son knows what’s right and wrong, even if he doesn’t do what’s best, he still knows!!! If that’s thecase, kids shouldn’t watch the evening news cause God forbid they see of a robbery or murder in their city, cause then they’ll want to go out and do it. (Those darn reporters!)

End of the day, there is someone out there who likes this song, and is bumping it. What this chick, or any other artist does does not affect me, or my precious impressionable can’t think for himself 4 year old. If You think these artists are responsible for the upbringing of the generartions then I truly pity you, and pray BET will create better programming so these “impressionable” kids will know what to do and what not to do, cause your not doing it, Teiara Mari is, right?

    • avatar Hmmmmm says:

My goodness, why all the anger??? lol Seriously. God bless your child for having you as a mother and God bless you as well. Just take a look in some areas where parents are not as concerned as you are. Is it sooooo wrong to tell kids that what they see on BET and hear on MTV is not always right???? I’m not sure what you’re fighting me on… I’m not calling anyone out. All I’m saying is that unfortunately, not all kids have the adult supervision necessary to tell them right from wrong. Is it the artist’s fault? No. Is it the parent’s responsibility? Yes. If there are crappy parents out there, are we suppose to look at these kids and say “sucks to be you, you’re doomed to be stuck in this cycle”? No. Mentoring is there for kids that are not as fortunate as yours AG. Let’s not deny that there are kids out there with absent, drug addicted, etc. parents… Those are the ones that I’m referring to.

  18. avatar hehe says:

but what if you use your “sponsors” money to pay tuition?? just playing, just playing!!!

1.this is why i don’t listen to “hip-hop”, something that was original meant to uplift the marginalized is now, literally breathing death into your communities

2.it is not the responsibly of any sector of the media to care about how its programming is effecting your child’s mind, that is your job!!!!

    3. live and let live, who occurs between two consenting adults, should only be the concern of those two consenting adults. i still don’t understand why people get so angry about the behavior of others when it has no effect on them what so ever!!!

    4. i truly wish that you people put this much thought, effort, passion, and emotion into more pressing issues currently plaguing your communities. yes, horribly tacky music is one of those issues, but the solution is easy, STOP BUYING IT, STOP LISTENING TO IT, AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, TURN OFF B.E.T.!!!! YOU SHOULD BE OFFENDED THAT THEY ARE EVEN IMPLYING THAT YOU FIND THAT SHIT TO BE ENTERTAINING!!! THE CHANNELS NAME ITSELF IS GENERALIZING AND STEREOTYPING YOU, WASTING ALL OF THAT ENERGY BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE WANT TO BE A WHORE, AND??????????????

  19. avatar AG says:

    @Hmmmmm,

No anger here! Just sarcasm in a healthy conversation! Of course everyone is not born into a heathly family, and there are kids who need guidance and mentoring. No they should not just be thrown to the side to bear with their burdens, but these songs are not the answer. That’s all I’m saying. People can complain till they turn blue in the face and music like this will still be put out, like I said somebody out here liking it. So blaming these artists or the songs is not proactive, I doubt Teiara Mari is reading these boards.
It’s about education, family, and some type of spiritual foundation (whatever it may be).
So it seems we agree so have a blessed day! *smiles*

  20. avatar Sparkle says:

I def don’t agree with the message of this song, but, hell I’m not gonna lie its pretty catchy. And then again I don’t agree with most of the rap/R&B songs that degrade us as women whenever possible. This song is no worse.
