Oprah gives magazine staffers 10K, iPads
Oprah Winfrey yesterday sauntered into the offices of her O magazine — and gave each staffer an Apple iPad and a $10,000 check as a thank you on the magazine’s 10th anniversary.

Each staffer, regardless of how long he/she has been working at O, received the gifts.

It’s not known how many staffers were gifted.

Winfrey, who once gave her entire studio audience brand-new cars, is ending “Oprah” in September 2011 to dedicate herself to her new cable network, OWN. (Continue Reading…)

Obama: BP will pay 100M compensation to rig workers
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and BP reached agreement Wednesday on a $20 billion fund to compensate victims of the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and the giant British company’s chairman apologized to America for the worst environmental accident in the nation’s history.

BP is suspending its dividends to shareholders to help pay for the costs, said chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg.

Obama announced the agreement after a four-hour meeting with BP officials. He also said the company had agreed to set up a separate $100 million fund to compensate oil rig workers laid off as a result of his six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling.>(Continue Reading…)

Man who torched Black churchs receives nine-year terms
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — One of three white men charged with burning down a predominantly black church hours after Barack Obama was elected president pleaded guilty to civil rights charges Wednesday in a plea deal that calls for him to spend nine years in prison.

Benjamin Haskell, 23, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to violate civil rights and damaging religious property because of race, color or ethnic characteristics. Sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 29.
