Kat Stacks Video Exposes Hypermasculine Culture

Monday Jun 7, 2010 – by

Apparently women who enjoy the genital pleasures of entertainers, then come out about it is the new “in.” Introducing Kat Stacks, the newest symbol of hip-hop promiscuity. The names of her outed conquests: Bow Wow, Nelly and the whole Young Money roster.

Yes, the whole squad.

We can talk all day about how reprehensible this practice of industry exploitation is. Or how such news manages to be main fodder for our conversations when situations like Aiyana Jones or the Gulf of Mexico oil spill or general economic woes continue to persist.

But recent events have shifted Kat Stacks to the realm of relevant discussion. A video surfaced recently that included Stacks in a bar getting slapped and forced by some guy to apologize to Bow Wow and Fabolous. Apparently they were defending the rappers’ honor.

It’s not unusual for a man to defend a woman’s honor in public through brute force. But for a man to defend…another man…by slapping a woman down…in public? Is that supposed to be anything other than homosexual?

For all we know, these could be random dudes who have no affiliation with Bow Wow. In fact, he denied any involvement in the episode:

“You gotta look at it like this,” he said. “Skip Bayless talks terrible about Lebron…and I’m sure the city of Cleveland knows about Skip being all hot on him. Skip wouldn’t go to Cleveland, as bad as he talks about Lebron. And a Cavaliers fan threw a basketball at Skip; is you really gonna blame Lebron James for it? Lebron’s probably in his mansion chillin’ with his girl and his kids, he don’t know that fan. But that fan loves Lebron James. So you talk about him, in his city, and something happens, you can’t blame Lebron. So therefore you can’t blame me. The only thing you can associate me with is that somebody said my name.”

“I’m not an evil person,” he continued. “I don’t condone violence. That’s just the type of person I am. I just feel like, if anything, positivity is always the way out. So I think that maybe if she humbles herself a lil more and be positive and go about things differently, then hopefully she’ll be alright…but that’s not my style. I don’t put hits on people, I’m in the music business…if I wanted to fight, I’d be in the MMA.”

Doesn’t sound like Bow was too concerned with the fate of Stacks. In his statements, there wasn’t an express of shame for two dudes slapping down a woman. Instead, there was distancing. Implicit consent of the slapping and handling cloaked in an explicit denial.

Sounds like hypermasculinity to me.

Hypermasculinity is a long-term phenomenon in the hip-hop culture. It’s 20 years strong and to the point where “beat that p—y up like it’s some cake mix” goes in a song and doesn’t raise an eyebrow.

But this latest video episode isn’t about misogyny in hip-hop, per se. This is about a culture that was here long before hip-hop. This is about men beating their wives unabashedly. This is about not enough men taking a stand against overt male supremacy.

Who called out Dr. Dre on bragging about slapping Dee Barnes?

Who called out on Eminem killing his ex-wife on record, twice?

We could go down the list and ask the same question. And receive the same answer. In the comments section on the Youtube video above, many were applauding the episode.

Is this really the world we live in? Is that gangsta? Regardless of how trashy Stacks may or may not be for her part in inducing the wrath of Bow Wow’s or Fabulous’ people/fans, any man watching that video should be filled with abject disgust.

The most appalling part of this video and aftermath isn’t the men berating her and forcing her to apologize. It isn’t the brazenness in which they called Bow Wow’s name out. It isn’t people standing around watching. It isn’t the comments from anonymous avatars cheering the perpetrators in the video on. It isn’t even the reminder than male-on-female violence is so commonplace that we’ve become desensitized to it.

It’s the response, or lack thereof, by women in regards to this video. In our culture, too much masculinity seems to induce three actions in females: Some buck the system and call out sexism at every turn, some become apathetic and some become proponents of the system.

This advocacy doesn’t have to be overt; it can come by omission. For example, it’s easy to justify this video by placing blame on Stacks. “She put herself in this position.” “She should have saw this coming.” “She played in dirt…and she got dirty.” By treating this as a Stacks-specific situation, a blind eye is turned to the copious evidence that men are feeling increasingly emboldened to “straighten” a female out if, say, a man’s ego and reputation is hurt by the statements of an opportunistic female.

I don’t know the specifics of what she has on Bow Wow. As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter. The hypermasculine culture, a beast that exists outside and within hip-hop, has been exposed for the world to see. Whether it was Kat Stacks or Beyonce that was slapped up should be irrelevant.

Unfortunately, it seems to be too relevant.

UPDATE: Kat Stacks latest video addressing the assault.

Sorry I’m a little Jaded , She could’ve set this whole thing up for publicity reasons. She could’ve staged the whole thing and in fact hired those men to come and hit her. By the way if you notice she didnt fight back she kind of waited for the cameras to zoom in before bending to the ground. Dramatic effect . I do feel sorry for her if this isn’t a ploy for public attention. However I highly doubt it people nowadays do so many crazy things just to get you talking especially about them. That is how people/ non celebrities like Kat Stacks and Kim Kardashin’s get the public attention that they crave for. I could be wrong it my cynical opinion.

  2. avatar jai.E says:

please OH PLEASE Clutch. Do not victimize Kat Stacks. I’m not saying she deserved to get assaulted or that what happened to her was okay. However, she’s messing with men who already have a standard low amount of respect for women and she’s constantly disrespecting herself, hence immensely lowering that already lower standard.

a female who goes around “flaunting” her self-prostitution (with NO kind of shame!) and calls herself “Kat Stacks” need not be defended. she doesn’t deserve it.

this is attack on her should not be a surprise.
it’s not only a hypermasculinity issue; it’s also an issue of respect.
& Yes, she played in dirt & she got dirty.

  3. avatar Akai* says:

Wow! Low down slut or no, neither Kat Stacks or anyone deserves to be beaten. I stand by my opinion on this all day everyday as people need to keep their damn hands to themselves (incl. Chris Brown) and I’d support laws to inflict harsher penalties on those that physically assault. It made me sad that I saw no one intervening to stop this and I thought I saw blood on Stacks; she is such a pretty chick and it’s unfortunate that she is so ignorant and has played herself so low.

And Li’l Yip Yip (Bow Wow) is trife…all 5 foot 2 inches of him!!! A real man would have simply said nothing or nixed all that extra and (in no uncertain terms) unequivocally stated that violence, especially two (count ‘em two) dudes hitting a female, is vile and cowardly.

Although I find it unfair and an insult to even remotely liken homosexual males to violent idiots, I sort of see where Zettler Clay was coming from regarding “hypermasculinity” and I never found anything either physically attractive or appealing about the looks or behavior of most dudes in hip hop culture. Too much of the oversized white t-shirts, pants hanging off the ass, “bros before hos” and other prison-ish and hypermasculine antics are so over-the-top that IMO the story they were really telling is that they’re scared and insecure boys using bravado, violence, loud talk and verbal abuse to come off hard.

  4. avatar Terri says:

this is sad and despite what she has said about these rappers and what not and how she’s trying to exploit her money, all the women in that bar should have jumped on those dudes and beat that ass…..hitting a woman is unacceptable, so oh you’re going to hit your daughter for her opinion or telling the truth…..This is a whole “that’s my home boy/brother mentality.” When that same home boy don’t care nothing about you and won’t be getting you out of jail…..

hay hay ok people just stop just looking at this video hurts me and people stop and think do u know how this young girl grew up were u a part of her life ya maybe she do want attention but all i hear is the bashing from every one on this site she is doing what she know how to do survive how would u feel if you were in her shoes and i know some of u are going to tey and shut me down but it’s all good god got a place for all of us. this is for ms. stack please be careful out there something could happen to u and i don”t think that not to many would care and if something did happen to u i don’t think that they would even look into it because of the way you carry yourself please be care ful of your surrounding and people i am scared for you and i will continue to pray for you go in peace we love you because you are human just as we are peace

  6. avatar Eve says:

I don’t care what she’s done…no woman deserves any man laying his hands on her. Period.

  7. avatar Lexie says:

As a woman I am deeply hurt to see another woman get slapped in her face by anyone yet alone a man. This is out of control. Where does it end. I wonder what happened in this young lady’s life that made her revert to this. As for the so called “men” on the tape, they need to be arrested and prosecuted for assault. Stop the violence against women!

  8. This is pathetic and those who recorded it are less than men. How can we support a culture (hip hop) that continually promotes the degradation of women. Will it take us to be slapped before we wake up. I am done.

  9. avatar AnonyMiss says:

i dont even like kat but this is just unacceptable, pathetic, disheartening, shameful….

  10. avatar dia says:

sticks and stones!!!!! she never got physical she just talks a lot…. why would you hit a woman, what a shame

  11. avatar Sharay says:

First and formost, I’m not defending kat Stacks. I’m astonished by her behavior as well as the males behavior that did this and continue to associate with her. I don’t care what she said, how many dudes she slept with, a women got beat down on camera and no one did anything about it. That is the problem with this society. It was a punk move and had they wanted there to be physical confrontation they should have brought a girl with them instead of putting their hands on a female.
Also, your mad ignorant and lame for calling me out of my name for my opinion. It makes you seem simple minded and uneducated. If you disagree do it gracefully and respectfully. If you disagree with me, why don’t you try to actually build an argument instead of merely attacking?

    • avatar Akai* says:

@Sharay: Did I miss something? Who called you out of your name or attacked you?

Aww Fuchsia, I think this is a bit unfair. Neither I or any of my female peers think this is funny or find this OK in any way, shape or form so don’t throw us all away. On the flip, when Chris Brown beat Rihanna I was disheartened to actually hear females in their 30′s and 40′s basically say that Rihanna must have done something to set Chris off, that she shouldn’t have touched his phone, speculating that if she hit him he’d a right to beat her down back etc.

    • avatar Clutch says:

Hi Akai – a comment was left that Sharay replied too. But, due to it being too graphic and negative against women and Sharay we chose to delete it.

      Thanks!

      Dede

    • avatar Fuchsia says:

I appreciate your comment. I don’t mean to sound like I am throwing anyone away especially the youth. I just want people to realize there is an opportunity for mentoring and reaching our youth exactly where they are. I was pointing out that most of our overexposed youth is being bombarded with images and no one is explaining why it’s not funny. (The comments on this site actually do a great job in that department.)

I heard older women “blaming” Rihanna as well, but I understood it in the context of an unhealthy relationship. In unhealthy relationships both people are to blame and when no one is willing to make a change or move out of the situation it ends up very dangerous and explosive. With Rihanna and Chris it was a topic based purely on speculation as no one else was in the car at the time the violence took place. Yet it was publicly and socially dealt with in a court, and through the press, via public apologies and interviews.

With this Kat Stacks situation I see three social issues with the act and airing of such random public violence. 1) she is considered the property of these males, and someone felt the need to “check” her because she was causing them embarrassment 2) she is lost, broken, and although she is trying to put on a front she is desperately crying out for help in seeking an escape from this lifestyle. 3) Prostitutes, Call girls, hoodrats, hoes, and victims of sexual abuse are strong people for continuing to get up in the morning and not killing themselves, everyone acts out in different ways, and God can and often does use them for his purpose in the end regardless of the severity of their situation.

I say the younger generation but really it comes down to experience, exposure and general maturity. A person 30 or 40 might laugh at the situation for different reasons, knowing that in the end people make their own bed. The best part about being young is having your whole life ahead of you. You make mistakes, you get beat down, you get back up, you learn, you make different decisions, and in the end and only after examining your own life and heart you judge LESS.

Laughing and making light shows a lack of maturity, but for entertainment purposes it shows a gaping hole in the maturity and growth of our culture. Its not necessarily bad it just means we have a long way to go.

I commend you and your friends for seeing and discussing these important issues in a mature manner. I was like that as well when I was younger, but no matter what was said, in the end I learned for myself.

    • avatar Fuchsia says:

@Akai* of course I forgot to put that. lol

  12. avatar Michelle says:

If I could advise her to do anything she needs to file charges against them!

  13. avatar Titan says:

Do these people speak English? I don’t understand a word they’re saying!

  14. avatar Lavish says:

It’s unfortunate what happened to her, but she loves any chance for exposure. Exposure for being, a hooker? Why is she on here?

  15. avatar NYCOTgirl says:

this whole situation is sad. this girl is crying out for help-she has been thru hell and back with men mistreating her and abusing her. that’s a SHAME that someone felt the need to smack her over some he-say, she-say!
I’m a Hip-Hop lover but this is what I HATE about rappers and the “industry”. Rap cats want to be thugs at whatever the cost and don’t know when to leave the street mentality alone. And many of them are NOT EVEN REAL/Have NO STREET CRED! Whether she is making up lies about celebs or telling the truth- that is no reason to hit this girl. No one came at Superhead like that…I wonder why?

Pray for Kat-quit dismissing her as a Black girl lost-she probably had a rough life and is just dealing with the cards she was dealt-just trying to make a come up the best way she can. We are quick to dismiss chicks that act uncouth and aggressive like Kat as “hoodrats” in our community-we need to help her instead of being so judgemental. So sad.

  16. avatar Claire says:

“But for a man to defend…another man…by slapping a woman down…in public? Is that supposed to be anything other than homosexual?”

What does a man’s sexual orientation have to do with him approving the assault of a woman? (Seriously. The comment quoted above came out of left-field and is completely irrelevant.) It’s evident to me that the ONLY issue here is the lack of respect that’s been shown to Ms Stacks.

The men in the video—and in particular, the perpetrator—see her as PROPERTY. THAT is the issue at hand. That is the problem, and the only so-called reason a man such as the one shown in the video thinks gives him the right to mistreat a woman.

  17. avatar ali says:

Interesting. Male rappers and the crew of guys they always carry around could be considered examples of black ‘homosociality’.

  18. avatar MZ says:

Hip hop is a lot like high school. There are too many females whoring themselves out to these males and for whatever reason they are assuming that these girls will be loyal or keep their secrets. There is no “Video Vixen” clause in your contracts so when a female calls you out about your sleeping around you have no recourse and you get no respect no matter your lame ass excuse. All you should do, BOW WOW, when something like this happens is issue a positive apology (it’s the least you can do to weasel your way out without looking like the loser you already are.)

So much outrage over Chris Brown and Rihanna- What about Kat? Not the same? You have to be in a “relationship” and get beat up and have people to care or cause media outrage. You can’t just be a female. Rihanna is classy because she puts her overt sexuality in a catchy tune. But Kat is clearly a groupie and should be smacked off of chairs? Selective Sexism is the new trend. Don’t play Ciara’s video, play Rihanna’s Rude Boi instead? Something is going on and women are playing into it.

    • avatar Ali says:

That’s an interesting connection on selective sexism. But, how do you stand for or apply that to a woman who perpetuates the same b.s. that keeps her down. When I saw the first clip I felt so sorry for her. Then after watching her response video, I still feel sorry for her but clearly she is her own worse enemy.

  19. avatar D_Nice says:

Exactly what makes this woman deserving of a beating by a throng of male groupies? Her being a ‘slut’? Should we now go around all of our cities and systematically beat all women we deem slutty?

And what is the punishment for all the men who enjoy the favors of these so-called sluts?

Any woman, or man for that matter, who approves of this is pathetic.

    • avatar Akai* says:

It’s unfortunate that, often, it appears as if some people either don’t read in entirety, can’t adequately comprehend, or are so irrational that they erect straw men. A straw man argument is, basically, acting as if commenters stated X or Y (when no one ever wrote anything of the sort) then proceeding to argue against the fantasies made up in one’s minds.

Outside of “bob’s” ignorant rant, who else in this whole entire comment section stated that Stacks deserved to be beaten or that they approved of her being beaten? Answer: No-damn-body! So, people need to quit with the bullshit!

When a child gets hit by a car, do we blame the child? No! To prevent children from getting hit by cars, do adults not caution them to not run into the street, look both ways before crossing, wait for the “go” light, always hold an older person’s hand etc.? Yes!

No one deserves to be assaulted but for anyone to act as if Kat is purely innocent and does absolutely nothing to put herself in situations where she could be gang-raped, beaten, abused etc. – they can keep that pee-cee-dee-cee bullshit too!

  20. I’m sorry who is Kat Stacks?!? I agree no man should ever knock beat a woman down especially over this b.s. But who is she and why is she significant?
