Discussion: Will Rihanna’s Edge Translate on the Big Screen?

Tuesday Jul 27, 2010 – by

It’s the recipe of a pop star–chart-topping music, world tours, endorsements deals, and the leap into Hollywood. Beyonce did it–how well is up for debate. Now “Rude Boy” songstress Rihanna will make her feature film debut in Universal’s Battleship.

The film is based on the classic board game according to Variety.

The 22-year-old singer will star alongside True Blood regular Alexander Skarsgård and Friday Night Lights cast member Taylor Kitsch.

Battleship is scheduled for release in May 2012. This gives Rihanna nearly two years to prepare for her transition into acting.

But will Rihanna’s stage edge translate to the big screen? Critics and movie goers alike have been less than impressed with Beyonce’s silver screen performances. The singer launched her acting career playing herself–a singing diva in Carmen: A Hip Hopera, and more prominently in Dreamgirls. Rihanna makes a more risqué–and perhaps a less calculated–dive into Tinseltown starring in an action flick: No mics, and hopefully, no airbag shoulders.

So what’s your verdict? Will Rihanna’s Billboard power fair well at the Box Office? Sound off!

Who knows? She has plenty attitude in her videos, but there’s no speaking there. But damn why is Beyonce all up and through this article? J.Lo is a singing actress. As well as Cheetah Girls, Queen Latifah, etc…

yeah the cheap shots at beyonce weren’t necessary. mentioning her name wasn’t even necessary. but it will be interesting to see rihanna acting in a movie

  2. sun.kissed says:

No she won’t, sorry but I don’t think she can cut it.

  3. elaina says:

yeah right. she will be so cheesy and robotic.

    • Drew-Shane says:

hopefully the role will call for her to be stiff and robotic. if so, she’ll do great! I just can’t see her acting. her live performances suck! stick to the radio…

  4. LaNeshe says:

If she doesn’t have “it” already, she better get it, because Alexander Skarsgard gets it poppin’ on screen.

  5. chrissy says:

I dont think so but people can surprise you, she got two years to get it right so you never know

  6. brit says:

if her role calls for her to be half naked and look bored all the time, then yeah, it’ll be a fairly convincing performance.

  7. aba says:

i don’t think it will work in her favor…

  8. Tina says:

Her accent’s too thick, it’ll be one hellofa distraction from whatever she’s saying because her face really isn’t that emotive.
Best of luck to her though!

  9. Alexandra says:

I’ll just have to see. I dont look forward to it, though.

  10. Lish says:

She couldn’t even act through her 20/20 interview lol.

  11. Grantagious says:

I don’t think she can really speak for her self let alone a script. Do we remember the 60mins Interview… “F LOVE! f love.” Nah she is not ready. But hey! the Illuminati has money for them acting classes! hahahah…

  12. Love that funky outfit.
