Is Our Mean Shoe Game Putting Us in the Poor House?

Sunday Jul 11, 2010 – by

We know shoes can make or break an outfit. With our kicks carrying that much weight, one could argue the kind of dough we ladies are known to throw down on our Diors is justified. Looking the part helps us get ahead, right? So it’s no surprise Glamour reports the average woman will buy 469 pairs of shoes in her lifetime, spending around $25, 000.

But with experts saying women are more likely to outlive their significant others, which makes them ultimately responsible for creating a  financial future that spans as far as their nineties, our love for shoes could actually be crippling, (no pun intended) to our personal wealth.

Is it time to double check the shoe game?

I really don’t believe it’s that big of an issue, most women love shoes true, but most are alos responsible enough not to go broke because of it. I doubt this is a real cause for concern for the majority of women.

I do agree with the number of shoes though, because I def have a love affiar with them, I currently own around 200 pair and I’m sure I’ve passed the 469 mark years ago, but even I know better than to spend my first OR last on something so materialistic [no matter how happy they make me]

No breaking the bank over here!

      AMEN!!! I co-sign completely.

I’ am a shoe girl and I love my heels but I know my limit of just looking and admiring the ones I can’t afford from afar (like those sexy nude studded Louboutins) and being responsible with my money. Because I know at the end of the day I can’t eat or live in my shoes and that they won’t help me pay my tuition. It is all about responsibility and balance and that goes for any obsession or hobby someone has that can break the bank in the long run, everything in moderation. But I just can’t see the majority of regular women going broke because of their shoe game

I agree with the others. we all have our vices and things we splurge on. I probably splurge more on purses, but I have a lot of shoes–they just arent’ crazy super expensive. I like a unique shape, color, print, etc but it doesn’t necessarily have to break pockets. good sales, online discount boutiques, etc. are a good way to get quality stuff and not go broke.

also, if you are responsible in your savings, investments, etc. and still have something left over for those “mean shoes” I say go for it. we all like what we like, we just shouldn’t risk our livelihoods for the sake of keeping up with others. shop within your financial means.

I splurge once in a while but definitely not at the expense of my other priorities.

i have more of a mean bag game, but i think the thing is if you want something you save up for it, wait for it to go on sale, or you go without it if you can’t afford it. it’s about trying to balance your needs and wants with what you can reasonably afford. materialism and trying to keep up with the joneses on too much credit is what got us into this recession in the first place.

  9. Mami NO YOU DIDN’T PUT US ON BLAST ABOUT OUR SHOE GAME. Guilty as CHARGED!

Most women who have a ‘mean shoe game’ own ZERO property or ZERO stamps in their passports or ZERO digits in thier bank account. . It is a disgrace! Get it together, ladies! Dior & Louboutin are not appreciating assets! Some of yall have the wrong priorities..especially if you make less than 75k a yr!

    Meh.

Yeh, I might have a “mean shoe game,” but I’m married to a man that is more than capable of financing it several times over!
