You Owe Me! Should Our Legal System Protect Male Celebs Targeted by Cash-Driven Women?

Friday Jul 23, 2010 – by

After Kelis slapped Nas with back child support payments and alimony, a conversation opened up around the validity and fairness of our legal system. Singer Lyfe has been vocal about the issue, stating the laws should be changed so that people can no longer live off of child support payments.

Now 41-year-old singer Brain McKnight is the latest hot topic.

TMZ reports the singer was sued for back child support payments by Miriam Lee, a woman McKnight was involved with– reportedly before he divorced his wife of 13 years. The woman claimed McKnight was the father of her 14-year-old son. According to reports, McKnight was ordered by a judge to pay the woman $341, 640 in back child support payments.

But lucky for ‘One Last Cry’ singer who already has two teenage sons, a DNA test proves he is not the father.

TMZ states: “Brian McKnight is not the father of a 14-year-old kid in Florida — so says a DNA test — and now, he’s no longer responsible for $341,640 in back child support payments the boy’s mother was hoping to collect. As we previously reported, a woman sued McKnight last year claiming Brian is her long lost baby daddy. But McKnight didn’t respond to her lawsuit, and the judge issued a default judgment against him … which means he was on the hook for the cash. McKnight eventually took a DNA test — and the results showed that Brian could not be the kid’s father … so the judge promptly tossed out the case. “

Reports have not confirmed whether or not Miriam Lee was trying to manipulate the popular ballad crooner. Sources actually confirm the two shared a long relationship, and eventually grew apart.

But we all know some male celebrities are targets of cunning women who purposely become pregnant to strike it rich. Writer Aliya King’s new book Platinum chronicles the antics of some of these women all too clearly. One woman in the novel went as far to call the wife of the rapper she intentionally became impregnated by demanding she pay up in advance for child support.

How will society address the constant celebrity child support drama and lawsuits? Male stars are primarily liable. Most of whom, are stepping out on their wives, sleeping with women on tours and music video sets. These men open themselves up for possible drama–legal woes and bank dissolving payments included.

What do you say about the matter? Are male celebrities wrongfully targeted by cash-driven women? Or are these men the ones at fault? Sound off!

I don’t feel sorry for these fools. They make it too easy. They need to be more selective about where they stick their dicks and use their own condoms. If they’re married they need to quit cheating and get a pre-nup. The courts determine what amount of money the kid needs based on his income. If dude is rich then of course she gon upgrade.

  2. avatar Kita B says:

I feel that if the average Joe (my baby daddy included) is responsible for paying child support, so should celebritites. Maybe after a few child support cases they may learn their lesson (especially those cheating on their spouses/girlfriends). And why should the law protect them??? For what??? “Congratulations, Mr. Doe, beacause you are a millionaire you aren’t responsible for taking care of the children you created outside of your marriage.” PLEASE!!!!

  3. avatar Clnmike says:

Everyone makes mistakes and regardless of what the intentions are you have tp pay for it. You put your self out there and get caught up with a kid you dont want sorry bruh you got to pay. But in the case of McKnight women who lie and drag men to court should be penalized for it. There isnt enough examples being made out of shade tree women to discourage that type of behavior. Start locking those hot asses up and they will cool off.

    • avatar Kia, JD says:

It would be virtually impossible to prove that in the case of two people who had sex, a woman was lying about whether she believed the man fathered her child. What proof could you bring in to court to show what she believed or not outside of a confession to a non-hearsay source or discovery of her plot elaborately written down like she was Dr. Evil or something?

    • avatar Clnmike says:

COME ON SON! She was a proven liar once the DNA test came out and he would be the fool to pay for it with out getting the results. If she can go through the process to sue for support knowing that the kid may not be his then she needs to be held accountable. The fact that she went through with it shows her foul ass intentions.

    • That is a really good point.

  4. They are definitely targeted. Some of those women are looking for a pay day no doubt. Knowing that, these celeb guys should be trying to make better decisions. Their fault.

  5. avatar Ebonylolita says:

@Fallible Sage I couldn’t have said it better.
We all have to be responsible for our actions. Whether you’re a “baller” with money or not. As a man you know what you open yourself up for by having unprotected sex. If the woman is willing to indulge in such risky behavior be prepared for the consequences, which could get ugly.
But ppl stay perpetuating the stereotype of oversexed male and/or hottentot venus. I wish our ppl would use the past to recreate a more viable future instead of brainwashing the future children to repeat negative cycles. But at least if they don’t I WILL. !PopStyle!

  6. avatar Meredith says:

Stop having all these bastard kids. Just b/c a man is rich, doesn’t make it more acceptable.

  7. avatar Me27 says:

Yes male celebrities are targeted. But they know they are targeted and still choose to sleep with these women. Instead of complaining about how women are out to trap them by purposely getting pregnant, they should practice some self-control and think twice before sleeping with these women at all.

And yes they should pay child support to the women (even if she did get preggers on purpose). The baby didn’t ask to be brought into the world and it didn’t get a choice in who it’s parents would be. Child support is intended to support the child and you will be hard pressed to find a judge who is not going to award a mother child support even if she did go about getting pregnant unscrupulously.

As for the claims that these women are using the money for themselves and not the kids. This is most likely true. But you can’t not pay child support, that would unfairly affect the child. If they want to get back at these women find some other way: like fighting for full custody, or suing the mother on the childs behalf and actually showing that she is using the money to benefit only herself and not to benefit the child.

  8. avatar Kia, JD says:

Are you kidding me, Clutch? How is this even a question?
First I don’t see how Kelis figures into this discussion about women targeting celebs one bit. Kelis didn’t do anything wrong under the law. As far as we know, she didn’t scheme and purposefully entrap Nas into marriage and fatherhood. State law determines what property is divisible and the courts determine how much is owed to spouses and children in alimony/child support claims. There’s no basis whatsoever for throwing Kelis in the bunch.

    Secondly, Lyfe…? Nevermind.

Finally, Brian McKnight basically screwed himself by not showing up for court. As mentioned in the piece, we don’t know whether the woman honestly believed McKnight to be the father or not. Either way, when you’re served with process and ordered to appear in court, then don’t show up at all, the court is going to take that as an admission or as your nonchalance resulting in a judgment being entered. When he saw that $$ judgment, THEN he wanted a DNA test? Then he wanted to act.

Whether you work at Target or you have multi-platinum albums you need to take on your share of responsibility for what might happen to you after a night of indiscriminate and (likely) unprotected sex. Don’t cry foul later and then wonder how the law is going to keep someone from exercising their rights (maintenance, support, etc) against you.

    • avatar Clnmike says:

“we don’t know whether the woman honestly believed McKnight to be the father or not.”

      Say what?

She knew enough to take his butt to court and not whoever she got knocked up by, you cant defend that.

You cant have it one way or the other both need to be corrected, men need to take the weight when they screw up and the scandalous women out there need to stop.

    • avatar Kia, JD says:

@ Clnmike Do you know how family court works? Maybe had he shown up to the first proceeding, they could’ve gotten a paternity test ordered which the judge would have used BEFORE making a judgment. It’s called a default judgment for a reason, ya know. Things never would’ve gone so far had he been prudent in the beginning and at least showed up to court in the end.

The DNA test proving McKnight was not the father doesn’t prove that she didn’t really believe him to be the father or at the very least, that she didn’t think he was one of other possible candidates. Guess what… if you have sex with someone and they have a child, there is room to assume that you could be that child’s parent.

    • avatar Clnmike says:

See the problem here is you keep trying to shift the debate to the court systems and remove focus from the behavior of this woman. You are making excuses for this woman for what ever reason (I believe sharing the same gender is your true motivation). This woman knew she had sex with more then one man in a time period that would make the knowledge of who the father is doubtful. THATS ASSUMING MCKNIGHT HAD SEX with her in that time frame. Knowing that this woman didnt bring the other “canidates” into court for child support she took McKnight to court that lets us know exactly who she wanted to be the father and I am going to say the reason why is for the “straight cash homie”. It doesnt matter what could of or should of happened in court becuase it never should of gotten to court in the first place.

    • avatar Kia, JD says:

The question is about the law. What the law should be. I don’t know that woman and don’t assume to know her intent. Frankly I find it lazy on your part and insulting to allege that I am “defending” her because I’m a woman. Everything I’ve said can be applied neutrally beyond this particular case.
You are making all kinds of assumptions about who else she may have taken to court or what her intentions were. Where you get this info from, I don’t know. I don’t care to go into that because one, we don’t know and two, that’s not what the original post was about.
You’re basically saying that you can’t take a dude to court for child support if he’s rich unless you know for certain whether he’s the father. But unless you go to court, how can you get an order for a dna test (assuming he doesn’t voluntarily submit to one)? You’ve condemned a person in the court of YOUR opinion and I guess that’s fine, but don’t go asking a court of law to do so on pure conjecture and assumptions.

    • avatar Cali says:

      VERY WELL SAID!

  9. avatar bob says:

I say laws need to be made that make dna test mandatory and that way no one gets over on anyone

    • avatar Anonymous says:

They are mandatory. If he had shown up to Court the first time around and taken the DNA test it would not have gotten this far. He ignored the suit and a default judgment was entered. Moral of the story – ignoring the Court papers won’t make the case go away.

  10. avatar Monie says:

I don’t understand Kelis’ connection. 1) she’s a celeb herself. 2) she and Nas were married. 3) Nas was was not paying court ordered support, so she should have taken him to court. 4) she works just as hard as Nas does.

Lyfe is a clown, who doesn’t want to pay child support.

Brian needs to stop banging groupies, then he won’t have to worry about bogus paternity suits. He’s been famous long enough to know better.

    • avatar secret ninja says:

thank you! Nas was paying thousands of dollars for a haircut and yet had to be taken to court for failing to pay child support! i don’t feel sorry for any of the above mentioned clowns or men like them! what kind of question was that?!

i have one: should the legal system prosecute these men going around and having babies all over the country and playing dead beat dad to all of them?!

  11. avatar Happiness says:

I posted something but I can’t see it yet…..come on Clutch.

Anyway, I actually agree that deadbeat dads should be made to pay, especially if they are trying to avoid their responsibilities.

Article: “Most of whom, are stepping out on their wives, sleeping with women on tours and music video sets. …What do you say about the matter?”
    ******************************************************************************************************************

I’d much sooner go on a Save The Speckled 3-Eyed Toad type crusade and advocate for wildlife before I’d muster up one iota of concern or sympathy for these types of people.

There are individuals far more in need, and deserving, of protection by the court and legal system.

  13. avatar Isis says:

Ummm no. Everyone who has unprotected sex knows the consequences. Why should the legal system save adults from themselves??

  14. avatar Tereva says:

This is unfortunate for all parties involved. It is bogus that these women are so corrupt that they’d manipulate & sleep with a many who seemingly has money & power just to have his baby. Yet, it is sad that the men haven’t learned their lessons in safe sex or common sense. I don’t feel sorry for anyone except the kids who get bartered in the process.

  15. avatar michelle says:

Here is the thing that I am trying to get some info about:

Why did she (the mother of this 14 year old kid) wait thirteen years to take Brian to court? Did she bother to file, down at Family Court, after the child was born and this has been an ongoing situation? Or did she think another man was the father of her son and he was taking care of this kid for the past twelve yearss?

  16. avatar cherish says:

I think that the legal system should be protective for all men, not just the ones who are celebs. This always happens. Whenever a man and a woman get involved, consequently a baby comes and the now mother expects the father to pay child support. We put so much hardness on how men should be reprimanded for their actions, what about the women?

  17. avatar Clnmike says:

You are going on the same information provided in this article as I am and you made your own assumptions from the other end of the spectrum.

1- The article stated he was being sued for Back child support for a 14 year old child, not a DNA test.

2- No where in this article did they mention any other man being taken to court for testing or being a canidate for being the father.

3- You assumed that McKnight intentionally ignored the order to appear in court as opposed to their being a miscommunication in relaying to him that he had to be there.

4- All of your assumption neatly and conviently fall in favor of the woman despite proof of her foul behavior so yeah I thyink I can safely assume your stance is motivated by gender solidarity vs fair play.

You better believe I condemed this trife chick in my court of opinion because in my court when you accuse a man of being the baby daddy and he isnt then thats on you.

So yeah that would make her Dr. Evil times two.

The law needs to penalize women for this behavior.

  18. avatar binky says:

    @Clnmike and Cherish agreed!

I think this is a two way street. First, the men who sleep with these women need to wise up and do better because they know MOST of these women are only interesting in their money and lifestyle because they wouldn’t look your way if you was just regular Joe from around the block. These guys need to stop acting brand new they know groupies and gold diggers exist and specifically target them so they need to use condoms and any other form of birth control and need to stop running through women like they go through water, on that front I don’t feel sorry for them because you get what you attract from fast women with no morals or self respect. On the other hand, some of these thirsty women need to be check especially if they are lying, being deceitful and doing everything they can to steal from these men like in the case with Brian McKnight. Some of these women have no shame and will drag these men through the mud looking for a come up and they just get a slap on the wrist or even get some fame out of it through the blogs circuit so their should be a penalty there because these women are using these men like cash cows since child support is based on income! Weather the chick got pregnant on purpose on not, the child support is for your kid not her so they should pay because the consequence of having sex unprotected is pregnancy…duh so why should this kid suffer because you didn’t wrap it up.

All in all, just DO BETTER and pick the people you have sex, date, or marry with wiser because you can’t fault nobody but yourself for leaving yourself open and vulnerable in this position.

  19. avatar Happiness says:

Well, my previous comment appears to have disappeared into blivion, so I posted it again…..

The way I see it, if you father a child, you should be able to take care of that child and provide for thier upkeep, wellbeing and future. However, too many lazy and money hungry women nowadays seek out these rich and famous celebrities to have a child with in order to capitalise on their fortunes so that they can be set up for life.

In terms of Brian Mcknight banging groupies, I personally don’t know how much of that is true, but I just read (about 10 minutes ago) that Brian Mcknight is NOT the father of Miriam Lee’s 14 year old son after a paternity test proved as such. I am sure her search for whoever the father of her son continues. See what happens when greedy people try and cash in on other people’s hard work?

Also, what is the point in taking someone to court unless you are 100% sure that man is the father of your child. If you are sleeping around with all and sundry, then how can you be sure who is the father of your child? I think it is even more shameful when it is proven, through a DNA test, that the person you claim to be the father of your child is not. Time to stop sleeping around, I guess.
