CNN reporter Soledad O’Brien is at it again with another special in her “Black in America” series. O’Brien’s latest report examines the Black church. “Black in America: Churched” debuts October 21.
The program looks at a range of issues the Black church faces and its continued significance in the Black community. The special kicked off with a report examining if the church was keeping Black women single. It goes on to look at homosexuality, and the church’s treatment of same-sex politics. The trailer for the special reveals that it will also highlight how the Black church is helping its congregation through the nation’s devastating recession.
But what do we really think about CNN’s “Black in America” series? What purpose does it serve exactly, and do we really think O’Brien’s reports—although often restricted to two hours—presents a holistic perspective of the complexity of Black America?
Are you watching CNN’s “Black in America: Churched?” Sound off!
I’m not really a fan of the Black In America series. I watch them out of curiosity and for a talking point, but they always leave me a bit unsettled. Something is either left out, skewed incredibly in the wrong direction or just not right. Would I rather there not be a series at all? I appreciate the information, but I think I would prefer it on another network like The History Channel. For some reason, I think the issues would be better researched and covered there.
Maybe if they got a better host. Especially one that can really relate.
I like to watch to see what perspective they are coming from and going to highlight. I don’t always agree but it does bring about good debate and issues faced in our community. Seems like the Black church is a hot topic again
Oh my, they are definitely trying to get those ratings!
You could do a million of these things and they still will never capture the essence of being black in America. That is because each of the 40 million or so of us has a different experience and we are always changing. I never watched because I know what it’s like to be black and those who aren’t African-American are fooling themselves if they think watching a tv program will give them the “black exerience”. They will never understand African-American culture and that’s a good thing in my book. I don’t go around dissecting other cultures so I don’t want it done to me.
It seems as if its some sort of way to explain US to the rest of the world. As if….
More propaganda. I cant even take them serious, Blacks in America are always viewed as monolithic on this country.
I agree with chillchic. “Black America” is too broad. And they always leave out foreign Blacks that also make up a good percentage of Blacks in America. Whatever…

I read this with interest. I am the author of the article on the black church that CNN interviewed for the first piece (the reporter was Liane Membis – [http://articles.cnn.com/2010-08-10/living/black.church.women.single_1_black-women-black-church-black-men?_s=PM:LIVING]. People have sent emails to alert me to this new series, which really looks to be based on my article. Hmmm. Anyway, I look forward to seeing how the issue is handled.
