Have You Given Up On Obama?

Wednesday Sep 22, 2010 – by

It’s seems the Black community’s excitement and love for President Obama has turned into doubt and disillusion. Monday’s live televised town hall meeting presented by CNBC, “Investing in America,” was nearly a room filled with ex-Obama supporters. While there were many attendees who stated that they were honored to be in the President’s presence, they were many, like one disappointed Black woman who directly told President Obama she was exhausted with defending him and his administration. The woman, a chief financial officer, mother and military veteran stated, “I’ve been told that I voted for a man who was going to change things in a meaningful way for the middle class, and I’m waiting sir. I’m waiting. I still don’t feel it yet.” Video footage of the town hall shows a cool and composed Obama, who laughed instead of becoming offended.

And the complaining didn’t stop there. A 30-year-old law school graduate told the President that the inspiration he once received from him is dying away. “I was really inspired by you and your campaign, and the message you brought, and that inspiration is dying away.” He told Obama he could barely pay off his student loans and wants to start a family. “I really want to know, is the American dream dead for me?”

The challenges didn’t go without explanation from the President. Obama called attention to his health care bill, the financial regulatory overhaul measure (imposing tough requirements on credit card companies) and his education bill that increased student loan availability. The President said these are things his administration put in place to make American’s lives better.

Still it seems it’s not enough for some Americans. But what about young Black Americans? It was largely our mobilization and energy for Obama that put him in office two years ago. Celebrity supporters like Jay Z, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé joined the rest of the hip hop generation, and our populous came out in record numbers. Not to mention, for many of us it was the first time we gave our dollars to support a political campaign. And for some of us, it was our very first time making a trip to the polls, just to see a Black man who we believed in lead a country that had long dissed us.

So have we completely turned our backs on President Obama? The man who once moved us to tears while thousands of us stood in the freezing cold on that winter D.C. day when he took the presidential oath to lead the free world?

Please share your sincerest thoughts on the President’s performance. Does Obama still have your vote?

What do people expect?! It seems like when Obama said “Change” everybody heard “quick fix”. I pay attention to the news and no, I don’t have more money in my pocket, and I still have to pay back those damn student loans, but I see things headed in the right direction.

    Am I wrong?

Did I miss something? Because so far, I can think of few policies put into place since he became president that I didn’t support.

  2. avatar Jante' says:

I still believe in President Obama and the work he is doing, however, I do sometimes feel discouraged and unsatisfied by what he has accomplished. I think it’s important for us, as black people who supported him and his presidential campaign, to continue to support him. He’s the President of the United States, not God! There are structures in place that are unfortunately preventing him from achieving all that we and he would like to see.

I would encourage everyone, if feeling unsatisfied, to write your local officials, help President Obama make the change we all so desperately want to see! We want a bill passed, turn to your senators and representatives who also have to approve a bill before any change is made. The leadership is there, but what has happened to the action and the following? Let’s not stop doing work and mobilizing just because our President is Black. “The action is in the reaction” so let your reaction show work and not just complaint.

Am I the only one who seems to understand that:

    1. Obama is HUMAN.

    2. How long has he been in office? It actually takes something called “time” to accomplish things. Yes “time”. Has anyone heard of that word.

    3. He’s not the messiah. He’s not going to be able to change everything with his magic wand overnight.

People put Obama on this extremely high pedestal that has never really existed. He has 100′s of people telling him what to do everyday. He’s the front man, the image of the American government. He’s the puppet and his advisors are the strings.

People shouldn’t feel discouraged. He’s only been in office since Jan 20, 2009. Today is Sept 22, 2010. He’s not a God, so don’t treat him like one.

It took America years (under the Bush admin.) to ruin not only America but the world. (Yes, we non-americans are feeling the recession too. So stop complaining)

At the end of his 4 year term you can all judge him then. But for now sit tight and wait. Economic recovery isn’t something that happens overnight.

If people want someone to blame, blame all the people who decided to live beyond their means. Blame the banks and Wall street. Blame subprime.

    Enough said. SMH…

lol No, You’re not. People are NUTS. Obama is a man, a human. He’s not God or a wizard with a wand that can make things suddenly change. Anyone who thought our problems would be fixed by one man needs to have themselves checked into an insane asylum. I’m sorry. Also, many of our problems we bring on ourselves and we need to look inward to find solutions. Sometimes, I just can’t with Black Americans. Is it the rap videos that have being living with delusions of grandeur?? If so, turn the damn tv off. PLEASE

  4. avatar Isis says:

    *have you living

  5. avatar Isis says:

    * Sorry, messed up quite a bit. lol Its Illusions of grandeur. I just get so mad when people have given up on Obama. He’s human for pete’s sake

  6. avatar Lee says:

I have not given up on President Obama because I know he is not a savior he is just a man. He is doing the best possible job that he can. The problem with Americans is they want their lives to mirror “Hollywood”, where everything ends up happily ever after, in less than two hours.

  7. avatar mememan says:

naw i have not given up on him . he is just a black dude in the white house

  8. Craig Brimm says:

Dude is still amazing me! He’s done so much that gets glossed over by the media. Obama knows if he shoots for a comprehensive single-payer health-care plan (aka the STARS), he will get a major health-care over-haul that will give us instant advantages like; insurance reforms, immediate Medicare benefits, Employer mandates, (aka The STARS).
We are all ahead of the game.

    • Dude also got Wall Street reform, which will save me and you from credit card fees, bank over draft fees.

    • Instituted equal pay for women (enforced by law — for the first time in history)

    • Began withdrawing troops (praise the lawd)

    • Funded broadband access for schools…

…the list goes on and on! AND most of this stuff dude did in the 1st one-hunerd (that’s right 1-hunerd days) He is the Michael Jordan of politricks!

I still believe in that America’s attitude is changing for the better. I’m a federal employee and a veteran and I know that it takes more than two years to change carpeting in a building so I never expected huge changes in our economy to happen overnight. The real change is happening everyday with everyday people believing in themselves and in a better America, a better world. Nothing good comes easy or fast.

  10. avatar binks says:

I agree with the comments, like what did people expect a quick fix? Change, especially for the better takes time, and most likely we won’t even feel or see the changes President Obama made until later so I think people need to stop, he does not have a fairy wand and can wave it and fix it right away. It is coming but just not as fast as people like, shrugs personally I’ am fairing very well under his presidency so far. Also, people need to keep in mind that the individuals they elect in their communities and area plays a VERY important role as well, whereas a lot of people skip voting for their local elections when they really should be getting out and rocking the vote too!

  11. avatar Drew-Shane says:

Everyone pretty much affirmed that all hope for Obama is not lost. I think we just need to really sit and evaluate the milestones he’s accomplished thus far. With the possible idea of re-election, I’m sure the media will begin to saturate and show Blacks not supporting Obama. Even with the divide amongst political parties, this will make it even easier for people to bash Obama. I think we should focus on getting him re-elected so we can get a little more “Change” or like my fellow commentators “quick fix”.

    • avatar Marlee says:

I completely agree with you, we need to stay focused!

    • avatar Mason says:

Honestly I want all these naysayers to deal with Tea party fools in office. Keep your sorry @ss at home….but DO NOT COMPLAIN!! I will not hear it.

Of course the media especially progressive media make their living off of discord and the Tea Party. I don’t trust the Clutch and their need to misrepresent black people.

  12. avatar Marlee says:

I like to approach things at an intellectual stand point but sometimes my emotions get the better of me and sometimes i want to tell people to “Shut up”

As many of you have stated Obama is only one man. It would be so much easier if he could wave a wand and everything be okay, but he cant. I whole heartily believe he wants more and better things for our country but has to deal with so many other factors in the government that he can not do it all.

I think its important to stay active in voting for our presidents, however, i think people fail to realize that voting and staying active in local government is just as important! If Obama tries to pass a bill but it gets denied by both the House of Reps AND House of Senates then its pretty much a done deal.

So vote for your local representatives and senators, and governors who you know will support your ideas and Obamas plan for success. I cant stress that enough!

I am a resident of VA and I def. learned my lesson last year when I did not actively participate in the governor election…. now we have someone in the office that I cant stand

  13. avatar King Jason says:

Obama ain’t Jesus or Santy Claus. He can’t fix the world or correct everyone’s bad decisions over night. If I am disappointed in him it is because he does not fight aggressively enough for his policies and tends to cower from the Fox Right.

  14. avatar Terri says:

I was reading this and thinking…. a lot. Okay I’m not one for politics but Obama is still good with me. I wasn’t expecting a great turn around but a gradual one so my hopes weren’t up in that department but it was up in the department of eventual change and a brighter American future.

I’m not going to reiterate what some of the previous commentators have said but I do want to make this point. When reading this article I instantly thought of Jim Crow. Some of the predominately white politicians and tv show hosts are daily verbally barraging Obama’s character, criticizing, and insulting everyday, and it’s in the media, one of the most influential tools in our daily lives.

They are sowing seeds of doubt and mistrust to get us to turn on him. Since we are his heavy supporters and election foundation, who better to turn on and try to brainwash than us, so that when re-election rolls around then his chances are slim to none. To them it’s not really about change it’s about getting this “nigga” out of the presidency and in the words of uncle ruckus “his monkey family out of the white house.”

Jim Crow didn’t lie when he said that this would work for possibly thousands of years.

  15. avatar starr says:

I agree with everyone who said people were expecting a quick fix. I really believe that is exactly what people thought was going to happen. Obama is human and he can’t wave a magic wand to make things happen. Who isn’t frustrated? They give him a hard time to matter what he does. People need to be patient….seems like alot of people lack reason these days.

  16. avatar Akai (Akai.Santiago@Yahoo) says:

I don’t even remotely agree with his positions on everything but I’m still a supporter and voted for President Obama even though I’m not a bleeding heart liberal or Democrat (nor am I a Republican). I’m liberal on certain issues, progressive on some things, and conservative on others but anyone that has “given up on Obama” should have never donned any rose-colored glasses and need to wise the heck up.

At the beginning of 2009 Democrats not only controlled the White House, they controlled the House and Senate yet have failed to capitalize on holding all that power. For example, when trying to pass health care reform the POTUS faced opposition from moderate Democrats i.e. Lynch, Teague etc. within his own daggone party and 34 House Democrats ended up voting against the bill!

Of course a president can issue Executive Orders (i.e. as Truman did to integrate the military or Eisenhower to desegregate public schools) and, basically, by-pass Congress but that can be a sticky thing (i.e. when FDR ordered the internment of Japanese Americans). But those who’ve “given up” already are in desperate need of a basic 5th grade social studies lesson on the 3 branches of government (executive, legislative and judicial) and how things work. Generally, the POTUS can’t do sh!t by himself in the way of legislation and they need to stay checkin’ their local reps, congressmen and senators.

Submitting and writing laws into bills is the function of the legislative branch of Congress — which is comprised of 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 Senators in the Senate. Having the votes of a simple majority in both the House and Senate can send a bill to the desk of the President.

The POTUS can suggest or propose, but he can/does not write bills. At the executive level, the President is responsible for ensuring US laws are obeyed and either passing or vetoing bills sent by the legislative branch. If a bill is vetoed, it can be overridden if 2/3rds of the 535 members of Congress vote in agreement to do so.

The highest level of the judicial branch is the Supreme Court but the courts’ function is to render decisions after determining the meaning of laws, how they are applied and whether they’re in line with the Constitution. In addition to having the power to overturn laws passed by Congress, the Supreme Court can also override and dismantle state laws. For example, when the Supreme Court ruled that a law in Virginia banning interracial marriage was unconstitutional, in one fatal swoop they struck down and dismantled similar laws in every state in the union…or when the Supreme Court ruled a Texas law criminalizing sex between two consenting adults of the same sex was unconstitutional, it killed the sodomy laws that were on the books in other states.

Keep your @ss home and don’t vote but when these tea partiers get elected the SHUT UP! I don’t want to hear ONE complaint!

  18. avatar Gail says:

No, I support him even more. I’m not “exhausted of defending him”either. This man has been working nonstop to bring this country around. the tea party ain’t nothing but the republican party trying to disguise itself. Well I ain’t fooled . I will be voting on November 2 and I encourage everyone that supports President Obama to do the same.

  20. avatar Lila says:

I think the President has done a lot of good things since he was elected. He inherited a train wreck which I don’t think can be untangled in 8 years. I never expected the President to solve my problems because I am responsible for doing that. I do believe that he has made some serious errors in judgment, however. I believe it was wrong for him to sue the state of Arizona to block them from enforcing that SB 1070 legislation. I think he did it for political reasons in order to appease hispanics. In doing so, he appears weak on matters of border and national security. The majority of Americans want the border secured and are against any type of legislation that appears to be amnesty. Arizona has a big problem with illegal immigration and has repeatedly asked the federal government for assistance. The assistance that has been provided by the federal government has been mediocre. It is almost as if the President wants people to sneak over here. He is also supporting the Dream Act when the borders are not even secure. Why reward law breakers? Also, the President wasted a lot of time reaching his hand across the isle to work with Republicans when they have never had any intention of working with him in any meaningful way. In my opinion, the President should have focused on job creation instead of health care legislation but this is all water under the bridge now. If he wants to get reelected, he must show leadership. He needs new advisors who are not “yes” men & women. He needs to appear more centrist in order to regain the support of independent voters. He cannot continue to allow the opposition party to label him as a socialist. The republicans like to cast him as an idealogue. He needs to forcefully rally against that label by supporting policies that are centrist.
