President Obama vetoes bill to speed foreclosures
President Obama won’t sign a bill that could have made it easier for courts to clear foreclosures, the White House said Thursday. The bill would have required federal and state courts to recognize documents that were notarized in other states. Both congressional chambers approved the legislation by voice votes, a move used for noncontroversial bills. The House passed it in April, and the Senate passed it Sept. 27. (Continue Reading…)
U.N. delegation underscores support for Sudan election
Members of the U.N. Security Council Thursday wrapped up their visit to southern Sudan, underscoring support for the January referendum vote that could lead to the region’s independence. According to a Security Council diplomat, the 15 members are making the trip at a critical juncture. U.S. President Barack Obama recently implored Sudanese officials to fully implement a 2005 peace agreement and move forward with the referendum. He called the stakes “enormous.” (Continue Reading…)
New study links race and delayed breast cancer diagnosis
It’s breast cancer awareness month. And for all the much-needed talk and fundraising done to help raise awareness about this important women’s issues, a new study shows a troubling link between race and breast cancer diagnosis. African American women are more likely than white women to be diagnosed at later stages of the disease and are more likely to die from it. Researchers have long wondered why and considered lack of health insurance as a likely factor. Yet, a troubling new study says that race and/or ethnicity — rather than insurance status – is the leading cause in these delays in breast cancer diagnosis in minority women. (Continue Reading…)
