Nicki Minaj Makes Female Hip Hop History

by Clutch

Say what you wanna say about Nicki Minaj. But this female pop star is changing the female hip hop game one multi-colored wig at a time.

Reports confirm that Minaj is the first female rapper with the most entries on Billboard’s Hot 100, and that’s before she’s even dropped an album.

The “Young Money” female lead has seven entries listed as Nielsen Soundscan’s 200 best-selling songs in 2010. Minaj’s songs have generated a total of $4,298,000 in sales.

Some of the songs include “Your Love” ($755,000) and her guest features on Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad” ($1,246,000), Usher’s “Lil Freak” ($508,000), and Lil’ Wayne’s “Knockout” ($519,000), among a few other chart toppers.

Seems there’s a Minaj factor in the record industry air. The artist scored her first number one single with “Your Love,” making her the first female hip hop artist to bank the position since Missy Elliot’s “Work It.”

The starlet’s fans are going nuts in anticipation of her Pink Friday debut album, scheduled for release November 23.

Our congrats to Nicki Minaj!

Nikki Minaj’s flow is of its’ own caliber. She, however, is a name AND face that you will never forget. Her lyrics are not the “standard” female lyrical flow. I like her. I’m not crazy about the Barbie thing but hell, lots of little girls are starting to play with their dolls again because of her……**Kanye Shrug**

Love it. At the end of the day money rules and haters drool. She’s a smart woman, annoying, but smart. Congrats to Nicki.

  • Crystal

I do not care what anybody thinks, I LOVE NICKI MINAJ!!!!! I only listen for her part in the song.

  • Brina

I’m TEAM Nicki since her freestyle on BET’s Hip Hop Awards last year. She basically killed her male counterparts in that scene. Say what you may but the girl is b.a.d.

  • Zoey

    Is it any surprise??
She’s featured on many songs with popular established artists. To tell the truth I’m really not impressed at all by this.

  • Lorvibe

I still think she sucks. She is nothing but another female rapper who uses sex to get to the top. Is sad that our young girls are looking up to her like she is God.

    Go Nicki!!!

“I only listen for her part in the song.”

    Me too!

  • Orchid

I completely agree… She’s on EVERYONE’s track who’s hot right now so why wouldn’t the songs be popular. That’s all they play on the radio -night and day… day and night.

This is a great accomplishment by not just a female, but a black female. I think Nicki Minaj has skills. I also think that the cartoony voice and the crazy outfits get too out-of-control, but hey, it’s paying her bills. Everyone should respect that. I don’t think people should get mad that she used the illusion of sex to get where she is. This strategy is nothing new and it’s not as easy as it may appear. The public recognizes not only her sex-appeal, but her talent as well. Don’t point the finger at Nicki Minaj for being a “poor” role-model for young girls. Point it at the media (or whoever is in charge of the images that we see) for not highlighting, glorifying, and sensationalizing our teachers, doctors, mothers, and church leaders the same way as Nicki and other rappers. And point it to society for their acceptance.

I think she sells herself short and I’m waiting to see the “talent” that everyone seems to talk about

This is a great accomplishment, but I’m still not really a fan. Her verses on songs are pretty entertaining, but for the most part she just puts a bunch of words together that make no sense and she says them like a schizo and people think its genius. I commend her for making a name for herself in this business so quickly and achieving great success, but Im not a fan. No disrespect, but I find her to be slightly annoying.

I liked Nicki better when she was just a random female rapper on different mixtapes… She went harder then before she started going crazy on tracks… I still think her real skills show on certain songs though.

“She’s on EVERYONE’s track who’s hot right now so why wouldn’t the songs be popular.”

    @Orchid and Zoey

But would those tracks by established artists have been as hot without Nicki?

I say, no. I think having more established artists cosign you will definitely get you far, but when you think about it, Nicki’s verses have been the most memorable components on a lot of these records that she’s been featured on. I saw the clip of of Trey Songz performing “Bottoms Up” on 106 and Park on one of the blogs, and all those teenage girls in the audience knew Nicki’s verse. Nicki is like Rihanna, in that regard, where having her do a guest spot on your song will almost guarantee that it will smash. A lot of people were quick to dismiss Rihanna’s contribution to “Love the Way you Lie’s” success because she was only singing the hook, but Eminem has a song on his new album with Pink singing the hook, and it hasn’t gotten nearly as much attention. “Love the Way you Lie” was #2 on US itunes without any promo or an official release. So, there’s something about Rihanna. Just like there’s something about Nicki.

Bleh…I’m not impressed. She’s done so many collabs, and been on alot of people’s songs…..so i’m not surprised. When she drops a record, she’ll be number 1 too. Rap gotten alot more commererialized. I”m not really impressed by her talents at all

  • Kim

    Thank you!!!!!

    @Isolde

But would those tracks by established artists have been as hot without Nicki?

i say yes… i personally think ‘Love The Way You Lie’ resonated with people because they identified with the lyrics and concept of the song (much like Jazmine Sullivan’s Circles) and its funny you should mention the song with Pink because I actually personally feel that Pink would have KILLED the hook of ‘Love the Way You Lie’… ‘Wont Back Down’ just isnt as strong of a song.

nicki did kill ‘Bottoms Up’ but her verse MAKING ‘Little Freak’ (that beat murked all), ‘My Chick Bad,’ or ‘Hold Yuh’ by Gyptian? Surely you jest.

but go Roman Zolanski for doing your thing…
