The widely anticipated trailer for Jennifer Hudson’s portrayal of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in “Winnie” has been released. The Film Bridge International biopic also stars Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela.

Directed by Darrell Roodt, the movie explores the life of Winnie, revealing that she remains more than the ex-wife of the former South African president, and that she was a key figure in ending of South African apartheid.

According to Black Voices, the cast additionally includes Elias Koteas as De Vries, an apartheid police officer who rose to power and attempted to stop Winnie’s anti-apartheid work. Actress Wendy Crewson plays activist Mary Botha.

“Winnie” not only chronicles the struggles of Winnie—including her kidnapping and public embarrassment with negative press—it’s also somewhat of a love story displaying how Winnie and Nelson Mandela’s love remained strong throughout the years they were married.

The film is scheduled for release in 2011.
