Seaton Hall star and strong NBA prospect Jeremy Hazell was shot in the back on Christmas during a scuffle outside of his Harlem home.
The senior star, who had been benched due to a wrist injury, suffered a minor gunshot wound after an apparent early-morning robbery attempt outside of the Carver Houses where Hazell’s family resides.
Although traumatic, Hazell’s injury was not life-threatening. According to a Seton Hall spokesperson, Hazell was shot “under his right arm” and kept overnight at St. Luke’s Hospital before being released.
Hazell, who skipped the NBA draft last year in order to finish school, is not expected to return this season. Seaton Hall coach Kevin Williard indicated Hazell may “redshirt” (or sit out) the season in order to help his NBA chances.
“We’re going to do whatever is best for Jeremy,” Willard said. “If he’s not going to be 100 percent and it will hurt his draft status or making money the year after, then we’ll make the decision to redshirt him.”
Police are still investigating the shooting.
