According to a recent study, people who sleep eight hours a night appear healthier and more attractive than those who stay up all night.
The study suggests that your sleep, and how you sleep, affects how other people perceive you, and probably how they treat you,” John Axelsson, one of the study researchers of the Karolinkska Instiute in Sweden, told MyHealthNewsDaily.
Women often turn to makeup or beauty treatments to help them look more awake and boost confidence. However, a good night’s sleep is what can truly improve an individual’s aesthetic desires.
“Sleep is the best beauty treatment that we have,” he said.
The researchers asked 23 people between the ages of 18 and 31 to sleep for eight hours one night and then photographed them the day after. Photos were taken in a well0lit room, with a fixed distance between 2 and 3pm. The participants then slept for five hours one night and they photographed them the next day using the same fixed variables. The researchers then had the participants stay awake for 31 hours and photographed them the next day.
Sixty-five observes then rated the photos without any prior knowledge to the participants sleeping habits. The observers found the photos of sleep-deprived individuals to be 6 percent less healthy, 4 percent less attractive and 19 percent more exhausted-appearing than those that were well-rested.
According to Axelsson, the study shows that sleep impacts how others judge your health.
The study was published online in the British Medical Journal.
