A twitter hashtag is waging a harsh colorism battle over the internet.

Club promotors in Columbus, Ohio were inspired by twitter hashtags “#teamlightskin” and “#teamdarkskin” and decided to create a party themed around skin tone differences. The flyer claims that the event is the “most anticipated party of the year” and will be held on January 21st, a few days after the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday.
The flier made its round over Twitter and Facebook yesterday under the hashtag #lightskinvsdarksin and has begun to recieve a national backlash.
Young Truph wrote, “This event might be the most popular failed event ever.”
“The media is telling us white is beautiful but naw we gotta add our own spin on it and degrade ourselves,” PoeticSongBird writes.

Even worse than the whole skin color ignorance, is the fact that there are still people out here who publicly refer to God’s creations as ugly!
My brothers and sisters we need to stop with this black on black bias. Black is black whether your light skin or dark skin…one is not better than the other. There are more important things that are affecting our community let’s put God first and put our heads together and make a difference in each others lives. Our children need to know that they are loved no matter what their skin tone or hair texture looks like.
I think people need to get over it. Human beings will always have preferred favorites. White people don’t get mad when some men have a preference of blondes over brunettes or vice versa. We dont see anyone boycotting Hugh Hefner for only putting Blondes in the mansion. And he has a major influence over the American standard of beauty. We come in a variety of colors and people will always have preferred favorites. its what makes us human. we are all different.
because COLORISM is the same as someone’s hair color. especially when the scenarios concerning haircolor HAVE NOTHING TO DO with black women, which is what we are talking about here, and only have to do with white women. do you understand the topic at hand? ::eyeroll::
@sloane, thank you. You took care of it for me.
The point is that lightskin vs darkskin is nothing more than a preference, like hair color or eye color or body type. Im assuming that everyone is up in arms about it because of the historical implications dating back to slavery times. We as black people will continue to deal with those issues as long as we feed them, ie make a big deal about a party that celebrates our differences. These differences will always be there and the preferences will always be there. The only thing that we can do is control how we deal with them. Some men like dark women some like light women…are you going to get angry about it and continue to perpetuate the complexion segregation or are you going to accept it understand that we are individuals with individual preferences?
What does preference have to do with a party promoting colorism, division, and pitting women against one another? So, according to you, being angry about how colorism is being used in this flyer is only going to perpetuate complexion segregation? Really? So, by your logic all I (a black woman) have to do when confronted with racism or sexism is be cool or “control myself” as you put it, and they’ll just disappear, because as long as I keep pointing them out, I will be the one perpetuating these oppressions? Well, alrighty then . . .
*pulls out chair, asks nicely for Estava to have a seat*
@isolde, EXACTLY. Thank you.
@isolde
Co- fucking sign!
Sometimes ppl lack logic in there argument astound me. I mean seriously how can someone see a celebration of differences in pinning each group against one each other. *Waiting for backtracking and saying we misinterpret what was really meant*
@Hehe
Your inability to see an argument from a viewpoint other than your own is what’s astounding. Not to mention your grammar.
@anon25
My grammar might not be the best but don’t assume that you know me. If another viewpoint lack logic sorry I’m not listening so please go somewhere.
@Hehe
Attacking your grammar was low and I apologize for that. It seemed like a funny comment at the time. Also, I felt that both arguments were logical but for different reasons. I disagree with both but I do see that they are logical.
“Also, I felt that both arguments were logical but for different reasons.”
@anon25
Care to explain? Anyone who grasped hehe’s initial reply to Estava would have realized that her criticism was in reference to the flawed reasoning behind Estava’s response. Unlike you, she didn’t just make a snide critique without any citing any evidence to back it up. Hehe was able to bolster her argument with an example explaining why she felt Estava’s reasoning was poor when she pointed out that pitting women against each other was not akin to Estava’s assertion that the flyer was celebrating black women’s differences.
You, on the other hand, have yet to posit anything substantive. You just keep making a bunch of random contentions, ie “You’re grammar’s poor,” “You’re unable to see an argument from another point of view,” “both arguments were logical but for different reasons” and then not giving any reasons to defend your inane statements.

lolololololololololol
I have no idea where this “preference” arguement is coming from when discussing this topic. This flyer, this party, says absolutely nothing about preference of color for black men. The title of the party, theme, if I may, is “light skinned vs. dark skinned”. The fact that anyone at all thinks that this is okay or tries to justify it is absolutely absurd, to me. This world would definitely, without a doubt, be Martin Luther King Jr’s worst nightmare. What we’ve worked so hard for for decades, to be named equal as the white community is thrown away simply with this ONE issue. Not only is it dividing ourselves and bashing our own skin, but it makes those who participate seem both ignorant and juvenile. I just really wish the black community would focus on more important things like educating ourselves, rather than focusing on frivalous issues such as “who’s black is more beautiful”. This mentality is part of the reason why you don’t see the black community as much as white on television, movies, magazines, ballets, operas, media in general- because while they are debating our beauty as a whole, instead of defending it as a whole and making it known that ALL black is beautiful, were too busy trying to decide who’s black is beautiful and what group of us deserves more credit. For it to be said that “This party celebrates our differences”, or “its not that big of a deal” “get over it”, truly shows the amount of growth our community still has to do. Skin tone shouldn’t even be an issue in our community. WHO CARES. WE ARE ALL BLACK. WE should begin to act as such! Rmember who you are and where you come from. You are royalty, not trash.
Yeah it just makes you wonder how they’ll go about checkin whose light or dark. Paper bag test? Palm test? But S. is right in the money. Both genders play a role in the “colorism”. Black women are not exempt from it.
And I agree with Estava. We are all different, and we dont like the same things. Don’t take it so personal. If some women weren’t so concerned with what Black men like, they wouldn’t give a flying crap, and they wouldn’t be willing battle other women over it.
We all do have freedom to choose what we like and dislike in our counterparts but you dont see white people hosting “pale vs. tan” parties. Light skin vs dark skin is far beyond a preference in the african american community. Unfortunately black people have a host of social problems stemming from slavery that cannot and will not be solved anytime soon. change is not passive though, it requires action. As a people we should understand this the most. This is a shame and should only stress the fact that we have to work harder to educate and uplift the black community from the pitfalls of history.
Sigh…… that’s all I can do is sigh b/c this subject makes my Iron low :(
I think Michael Eric Dyson, Cornel West and Rev. Al should go to this event and stage a racial “intervention” for any black woman ignorant enough to actually attend this foolishness.
ITA. The only thing more foolish than this party are the people who will attend.
It shouldn’t matter what skin color a man or woman is, it’s about who they are and how they treat you and others. We all have our preferences and our own thoughts on attractiveness and we should respect each other for them whether we agree or not. I’ve dated different races from this country and from outside of this country. My parents stressed to me to find someone that treats me with respect and loves me for me, which I have found. Color is just that, color, it shouldn’t determine whether or not, you get involved with someone.
I’m attracted to different types of man no matter what race they are. I could care less if they’re dating or married to a black,white, hispanic, latin, asian, whatever. They could be in a relationship with a guy for all I care, I still think they’re attractive.
I am a Black American woman, neither light-skinned or dark-skinned in my opinion. I’m pretty much in the middle of the spectrum and I love it. This party is lame and I wouldn’t go because if the men are pretty much choosing me on the basis of my skin color, then they aren’t the type of guy I want to meet and any guy with respect for himself and women wouldn’t be there either.
Didn’t this happen last year too. And the year before that. If these low life’s want to have their segregation party, I say let them!
Some black people are stuck in the slave mentality mindset. Separating your people like cattle. Just like the slave owners did. Shame on the people organizing this party. The sick part is that some women will actually attend this. Oh well.
Colorism is a big issue, it seems like this club was just trying to make light of it, and not giving a preference. Maybe it’s the first step to people to stop caring about this stupid stuff.
The organizers thought this up to purposely create controversy. They know controversy sells. Unfortunately for them they didn’t count on all of the negative publicity.
None of this surprises me one bit. We still have black folks using the term “good hair”. I cringe every time I hear that term. When will we finally get out of the dark ages???
Lol the girl with the long weave doesn’t even have dark skin
the people who probably didi this are probably white people who dont know or dont care about the effect it has on the people targeted
you can’t be…serious, right???
To me preference has become concealed racism for most.
I know this is an old Topic, but I just came across it while searching mixed chick products. I can’t believe this Bullshit…. I really can’t. We wanna complain about white folks holding us back when we have topics like this. This is ignorant of all ignorance amongst ourselves.
SHIT LIKE THIS MAKES ME WANT TO VOMIT!!!! Now I see what white folks mean….
