Fantasia Barrino will be packing on the pounds for a new movie role.
The American Idol has signed on to play gospel legend Mahalia Jackson in an upcoming biopic film, RadarOnline.com reports. People have speculated her weight gain to be a sign of pregnancy. However, her manager disputes those claims.
“Fantasia is 100 [percent] not pregnant. The only thing she’s pregnant with is prosperity,” Fannie’s manager Brian Dickens said. “In fact, she’s just signed on to play the lead in Mahalia and has been told to gain 30 to 45 pounds for the role.”
The film is based off the 1993 book, Got to Tell It; Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel, which tells the story of the famed American gospel singer and civil rights activist. Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her showcased talents and abilities. Barrino will act out Jackson’s life from her rise from poverty in New Orleans to fame. Jackson died of diabetes and heart complication in 1972 at the age of 60.
Since Barrino’s win on American Idol, the singer has released three albums and received several Grammy award nominations. She starred as herself in the 2006 Lifetime film, Life is Not a Fairy Tale: The Fantasia Barrino Story and played Celie in the Color Purple, for which she received glowing reviews.
