Janelle Monae is known for her off the beaten path style. While the singer sticks to a uniformed black and white look, cummerbunds and Mohawk natural coif, she is unlike any other singer out.

Off the heels of an high energy, high visibility Grammy performance, Monae was in Toronto, Canada for Canadian Music Week. Delivering her hits with the excitement we’ve come to expect, Janelle slid in a little something we didn’t see coming: her take on some of our favorite classics.

On stage at the Fairmont Royal Yor, the Bad Boy Recording artist broke into a karaoke type cover of Lauryn Hill’s “Lost Ones” and then Kanye’s “Runaway.” Janelle seemed to really be having fun with it, feeing off the crowds energy and infusing the songs with her own. It almost makes us want to see the star do a real covers album and show off her range some more.

Clutchettes, check out Miss Monae’s impromptu karaoke session here and tell us what you think!
