As if we needed another reason to love Idris Elba.
The actor, producer, sometimes DJ and only reason why Takers was worth our ticket fare has been quoted in the press recently on his feelings about Black Hollywood, Tyler Perry films and now he is speaking his mind again, straight no chaser.
Today, Idris responded to critics who objected to his casting in the upcoming ‘Thor’ film. The actor is slated to play the role of the Nordic God Heimdall, a role that many die-hard fans of the legendary Marvel comic, say he doesn’t fit.
“It’s so ridiculous. We have a man [Thor] who has a flying hammer and wears horns on his head. And yet me being an actor of African descent playing a Norse god is unbelievable? I mean, Cleopatra was played by Elizabeth Taylor, and Gandhi was played by Ben Kingsley.”
Word, Idris word.
That there is racism in Hollywood is not shocking, but the uproar over Idris’ casting incident seems absolutely ridiculous. Really, comic book nerds? You have nothing else to do with your lives but worry about who could give the most accurate portrayal of a fictional caricature? If it’s just about staying true to the character- we can only imagine the outrage you all felt when Halle Berry busted out a non-foreign accent for her adoption of X-Men’s Storm (insert our best sarcastic Twitter face here).
The whole thing is absurd but and we love that Idris is calling it out by name. ‘Thor’ will be a hit in no small part to the beautifully Black actor and his smoldering gaze. So stay frosty haters and GTFOHWTBS, nerds.
