Last month, in the middle of celebrating their 100th anniversary, West Philadelphia High School made the news for a less than spirited occasion.

Early Monday morning, before school doors opened, masked thieves broke into the school stealing $80000 worth of school equipment. 58 laptops, two desktops and an LCD projector were stolen. The school’s alarm never went off during the theft.

Since then, police have caught the burglars- all were student at the school. Authorities have also recovered half of the stolen items. And while the sad story has not made for great press, the school has caught the attention of mega watt star Will Smith.

The West Philly native is donating 30 new Apple computers to the school. Combined with the ones that have been recovered by police, this gift will allow the students to have all the computers they did before.

Will’s gift will be made through the Will and Jada Foundation, which he founded with wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. While the star himself will be unable to attend, Charlie Mack, a local community activist and Smith’s longtime assistant will be delivering the new computers (29 laptops and one desktop) to the school today.

We’re sure the kids will be thrilled and grateful for the gift. It’s great to see that even at the top, Will hasn’t forgotten his stomping grounds.
