We are constantly discussing the lack of diversity in the fashion industry and yet few are working toward a clear solution to the issue. Oroma Elewa is one of the few helping to change the tide as the founder and director of Pop Africana, a visually stunning glossy seeking to enrich us all with the beauty and energy that is African culture.
Pop Africana came to life in 2010 and has been garnering rave reviews ever since. Nigerian-born Oroma wanted to change the way Africa was seen in the fashion industry as well as in the media with the message “to reeducate the world on genuine African aesthetics and ideas of beauty and style.” She started the magazine with no previous publishing experience, just a desire to elevate and educate the way we view Africa.
Oroma’s style is a perfect reflection of her bravery, intelligence and the vibrancy of her Nigerian roots. She isn’t afraid to change it constantly, most notably her hair which she wears in a multitude of styles from waist-long braids to tied up in a turban. She goes glam in form-fitting dresses in bold colors like red and orange, but she also loves to dress down in oversized chambray shirts and flat boots, mixing masculine and feminine. She is a true inspiration to us all, showing us just what is possible when we set our minds to something and follow our dreams.
