It has been a long time coming, but bloggers are finally being embraced by major fashion and beauty brands. MAC Cosmetics is the latest to create its own Bloggers Collection and two of the chosen women are beauty bloggers of color, Patrice Yursik of Afrobella and Lianne Farbes of The Makeup Girl.
MAC executives emailed about 80 bloggers who then had to submit their ideas for either a lipglass or an eyeshadow using vivid imagery and an attention-grabbing name, which MAC is well known for. The chosen bloggers then traveled to Toronto to the MAC Cosmetics headquarters where they were able to create and test their products.
Patrice created a lipglass for the collection named “All Of My Purple Life,” which as a true Prince fan like myself knows, is the first line of hit song, “Erotic City”. Of her choice of a deep purple sahde, Patrice said: “Purple is my power color. Purple is my neutral. If I were a color, I’d be purple. When it came time to choose the name for my color, there was no doubt. The first line of Erotic City by Prince came immediately to mind. All Of My Purple Life. And I wanted it to be the perfect purple for ALL shades of beautiful.”
Purple Rain has been her one of her favorite films since she was young and she shares the love of the color with Prince, thus nothing could have been more fitting.
Lianne Farbes created the “Hocus Pocus” eyeshadow as an ode to the ever-popular smokey eye. She told C+C: “My inspiration is rooted in the classic smokey eye. It’s the number one question I get from my readers: how to do it, what to use, etc. I wanted a universally flattering shade that took the guesswork out of the smokey eye mystique. You can even use your fingertips to apply. Super simple. The name was easy, Hocus Pocus, because it’s smokey eye magic!”
Despite a few naysayers, the reaction to the new collection has been overwhelmingly positive with Lianne’s friends and family being especially proud. “My family were the first ones to find out. I was bawling tears when I told my mom (she thought something was wrong so I had to calm down and explain). I think that other bloggers are excited also because it’s like us kicking the door in for things like this to happen for others, so they can follow in our footsteps. Hopefully more brands will follow suit with more opportunities that are just as if not more amazing.”
As many writers have spoken out about beauty brands excluding bloggers of color, it’s refreshing to see two brown beauty bloggers recognized with this opportunity. Lianne views it as a sign that times are changing: “This collection is a prime example [of how things have changed], but I honestly think it’s more than just about being a black blogger. It’s about brands recognizing and seeing something in us that they may not have seen before and that’s because readers relate to us as people. Here we are pouring out our personality, love and care into our blog posts day after day. They get to know us. They feel like they are over at a girlfriend’s house gabbing about makeup and beauty. Awhile back, you would have never seen one black girl on a list like this, let alone two. I think that speaks to the brand and their openness to recognize talent ahead of skin color or ethnicity which is a huge step.”
The other bloggers included in the collection are: Amber Katz of Beauty Blogging Junkie, Christine Mielke of Temptalia, Lesley Ellen Mirza of Lipstick Powder N Paint, Karen Monterichard of Makeup and Beauty Blog, Lily Nima of Beauty Maverick, Aileen De Los Angeles of The Shades of U and Wendy Lam of Nitrolicious.
