EKINEYO is the effervescent clothing line of an up and coming designer out of Brooklyn, NY. Oyenike, designer of EKINEYO, grew up in Chicago and at one point had aspirations of building furniture. She considers her design aesthetic to be minimalist in nature; yet, bold.
EKINEYO has been catching the eye of who’s who of the fashion world. The line was recently featured on The Fashion Bomb Daily and within hours she had celebrity stylists contacting her trying to get their hands on her vivacious designs.
Coco+Creme recently had the pleasure of conducting a brief questionnaire with the designer of EKINEYO to learn a little more about her line and her inspiration.
Coco+Creme: Where does the name EKINEYO come from?
Oyenike: EKINEYO is my name (Oyenike) spelled backwards.
C+C: How long have you been designing/making clothing?
O: I’ve been designing about 10 years. I started in high school with a friend’s prom dress.
C+C: If you had to describe your line in 25 words or less, how would you describe it?
O: EKINEYO is a line inspired by color, minimalism, and very clean silhouettes. It’s easy fashion with striking details here and there.
C+C: What inspires you? What colors, patterns, textures, etc.?
O: I had a very cultured upbringing in Chicago, so I developed an eclectic taste. I love modern art, going to museums, and carpentry. I always wanted to build furniture.I’m inspired by bold color and simple construction. I’m also inspired by music. I love listening to Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Common, or A Tribe Called Quest, while I’m sewing.
C+C: What’s been the biggest moment in your career thus far?
O: My biggest moment was getting an email from 2 celebrity stylist, within 10 minutes of each other, and also getting orders from customers in the UK and Japan.
C+C: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
O: I see myself happy and evolving.
C+C: Who is your dream client?
O: Tilda Swinton because she is like a walking canvas. Anything she wears looks like art.
