Filming is not even underway and already the Mahalia Jackson Biopic starring Fantasia is gaining buzz.

The latest reports are that the film has been invited to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for a screening there. Adrian Taylor, executive producer for the film said:

“They’ve offered for us to do a screening there,” Taylor said. “We can either enter it as competition, or we can have it in the non-competition and premiere it, if it’s edited. It’s got to be ready by April 6 for next year’s Cannes.”

Currently, the film is scheduled to begin shooting in October of this year and is set for a late 2012 release. It remains to be seen if that schedule will be bumped up in an attempt to meet the deadline for Cannes.

The film chronicling the legendary singer’s like is based on the book, Got To Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel. It follows Jackson’s career from her barrier breaking performances to her support of Martin Luther King in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. The film will be shot between New Orleans and Chicago. The screenplay for the project was written by Jim Evering. Euzhan Palcy will be sitting in the director’s chair.

I like Fantasia and all, but she isn’t a powerhouse like Mahalia Jackson was.

I like her too, and she MAY be able to pull off the singing part; but I don’t think she can act very well. First, Mary J. playing Nina Simone, now this. I would rather they get good actors who know how to lip sync well (like Angela Bassett in “What’s Love…”) than singers who can’t act.

First of all Fantasia will not be singing but if she had to she could pull it off. (wish she was singing). As for her acting skills she can do it, I have faith she will do well. Go Fantasia, so proud of you.

    Yay! TeamFantasia all the way…

Is it cheaper to hire a singer than a good talented actress?

  • Mae

I used to like her, but she is so messy. I am not a fan of people that go out of their way to make their lives as complicated as possible.

Co & Sign. Used to be one of Fantasia’s biggest fans, but she’s too old to keep making stupid mistakes and have everyone make excuses for her. I’m sure Mahalia Jackson is turning in her grave as we speak…

  • Mimi

Could not agree more sli. I’d much rather see a good actress lip syncing than a bad actress who can sing well. But since I haven’t seen Fantasia act, I’ll reserve judgment til I do. Besides, she’s got to be better at acting than Beyonce.

People kill me they act like they perfect please. Mahalia ain’t turning over in nothing, she wasn’t the perfect saint neither. I’m quite sure tasia took acting classes for this role.
