Filming is not even underway and already the Mahalia Jackson Biopic starring Fantasia is gaining buzz.
The latest reports are that the film has been invited to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for a screening there. Adrian Taylor, executive producer for the film said:
“They’ve offered for us to do a screening there,” Taylor said. “We can either enter it as competition, or we can have it in the non-competition and premiere it, if it’s edited. It’s got to be ready by April 6 for next year’s Cannes.”
Currently, the film is scheduled to begin shooting in October of this year and is set for a late 2012 release. It remains to be seen if that schedule will be bumped up in an attempt to meet the deadline for Cannes.
The film chronicling the legendary singer’s like is based on the book, Got To Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel. It follows Jackson’s career from her barrier breaking performances to her support of Martin Luther King in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. The film will be shot between New Orleans and Chicago. The screenplay for the project was written by Jim Evering. Euzhan Palcy will be sitting in the director’s chair.
