By now it’s pretty much common knowledge that the ratings for Oprah Winfrey’s cable network, OWN, have been lower than expected. Still, many claimed that as the mogul was focused on her 25th anniversary season, the strategy for the network venture was not fully fleshed out. Others claimed that regardless of strategy, OWN could not succeed without Oprah herself directly at the helm.
Now, those in the latter group will have their theory tested as Oprah announced yesterday that she will assume the title of CEO of OWN. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is one part of the shift inside Oprah’s new venture:
In a related move, Erik Logan and Sheri Salata, the current presidents of Harpo Studios, the TV unit of Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, are taking over as presidents of OWN, effective immediately. Harpo will start focusing all of its new TV production on OWN.
The shift are the biggest news out of the network since OWN pushed out its network head, Christina Norman.
In a statement released yesterday, Oprah said:
“I am ready to dedicate my full creative energy and focus as the full time CEO of OWN,” Winfrey said in a statement. “By aligning the mission, talent and leadership of Erik, Sheri, the OWN team, the Harpo team, along with expertise of [Discovery Communications CEO] David Zaslav, Peter and all of Discovery behind us, we can unleash the full potential of the network.”
