Terry Richardson Shoots Plus-Size Models for Vice’s “Tons of Fun” Spread

Wednesday Jul 20, 2011 – by

From C+C -- Terry Richardson recently shot a spread featuring 11 plus size models for the unfortunately titled “Tons of Fun” spread in Vice’s Photography issue. The shoot features these women in seductive poses reportedly styled by themselves.

The spread has a raw, unpolished edge with an excessive use of Flash and a set with a simplistic white background. While some have criticized its rawness in comparison to plus-size spreads like V Magazine and Vogue Italia, others have embraced it for pushing the limits of what’s considered sexy.

What do you think of Vice Magazine’s “Tons of Fun” Spread?

richardson usually doesn’t shoot black women.. he has only one to be exact –naomi campbell …well he has shot a dominican model..but i dont know if that counts.. probably not . but i guess most fat models are black?? is this suppose to be tons of “black” fun or are only plus size models black beside like two people..? interesting..

Everybody knows that “fat” black girls can be fat and still cute/sexy/fabulous that’s why…he picked the right girls if you ask me

nevermind my reply…..i just actually saw the pics…how disresectful and tasteless…

No bueno!!!! I am not feeling it. I can appreciate a woman of size loving herself and being photographed tastefully, but this here???? Um, no!!! One chick’s arms ar so hairy!!! they just look like he went to a big girl store or someplace where they were trying on clothes and was like “Hey, wanna take a picture?” Is he supposed to be a professional photographer?

  3. avatar sli says:

Yeah it’s raw, just regular women doing their thing, so If they’re confident and comfortable with it, carry on.

That sounds like almost every Terry Richardson shoot. And I love that style of his. If you want something that’s less “raw” I guess he did a shoot with another plus size model. Crystal Renn. Although it’s tongue and cheek and maybe (and that’s a big maybe) some people might be offended by the images. So google at your own risk.

I don’t know who to be more angry at, Richardson, VICE, or the models. Didn’t any of the models do research on the magazine or Richardson before they agreed to the shoot?

I’ve followed (but long stopped reading) the mag for waay over a decade – the founders are from Montreal, Canada, so it first was published as a freebie newspaper and it was easy to get in my city. Since their move to NYC and the expansion of their company, the magazine has turned from edgy and provacative to a steaming pile of race fail. Hipsterdom at it’s worst. I wholeheartedly think that the joke is on these women. Hell, this is the first time I’ve seen a model shoot outside of a Black – oriented publication in which 90% of the women are women of colour. And this is for a magazine whose demographic is towards 16-30 white folks ? (I’m generalizing to make a point).

Now why do you think that is????? Are we this desperate to get out images in magazines?

i am photographer. this is just bad work.

  7. avatar zy says:

WTF? this shoot is not “raw”, it’s HORRIBLE. these women look a hot mess.

I am so down with it… WORD!

I am moderately acquainted with Richardson’s 70s porn aesthetic in large part because of the nasty allegations of sexual predation and misconduct that have doggedly trailed his career. Links below, if you have the stomach for it. Why this man is still able to find work in an industry that is run by the ranks of women such as the proud, tough-as-nails Anna Wintour, and the ever contemplative Franca Sozzani, is beyond me.

This spread is nothing more than another iteration of hipster racism. Why?

It’s VIce. When has hipster bible Vice ever run a spread that featured mostly black models? And it’s just happenstance that the lone, majority black spread has a “fat chick” theme and is titled “Tons of Fun?

To my eye, those photos are devoid of any redeeming admiration or reverence for their subjects. Those women are not being celebrated or idealized. Rather, what I see are black women being served up to an audience of affluent, white, urban twentysomethings for the sole purpose of mockery and ridicule.

    Fuck Vice.
