Vesta Williams, the 80s R&B singer best known for her style and soulful voice, was found dead in her California hotel room last night.
The Ohio native enjoyed success throughout the ’80s and early ’90s, and is probably best known for her 1989 hit, “Congratulations.” Although Vesta never cracked the Top 40 on Billboard’s Hot 100 list, she was still a fan favorite, and enjoyed several hits on Billboard’s R&B charts.
Last year, the 53-year-old singer sat down for an interview and said she felt blessed “to be 53 years old, alive and well and kicking.” She went on to say she didn’t have any health issues and was excited about her new material and show.
At press time, no cause of death had been identified.
Since hearing the news, many of Vesta’s celebrity friends have expressed their condolences. Kimora Lee Simmons tweetwed, “R.I.P. Ms. Vesta Williams. Wht a tremendous talent+great soul! ‘Cuz as long as I can breathe, you’ll always be the one~for me!'” and Vesta’s good friend Jackee Hary wrote, “…just received truly devastating news: R&B great, and my friend of many yrs, Vesta Williams (
@vesta4u), has passed away. #RIPVesta“
Vesta will most certainly be missed but her music will live on forever.
