Proving each day that she’s even more the renaissance woman than we knew, Erykah Badu has recently revealed that she wants to become a midwife. In an interview with People Magazine, the Dallas-songstress explained that she is already a doula (one who provides support to a mother and her loved ones during the delivery process), providing massages and Reiki treadments during labor. Her clients call her “Erykah Badoula” and she offers her services gratis. Badu now wants to undergo the proper certification to become a licensed midwife.
The mother of three tells People that witnessing a friend’s birth helped her begin on this new journey: “I’ve always had a mothering nature. But I didn’t plan on becoming a doula. I just wanted to care for my family and friends,” she told People. “When I saw the baby, I cried. I knew what I was supposed to do with my life.” Badu is now a spokesperson for the International Center for Traditional Childbearing.
Have any of you used a doula or midwife? What was your experience? And would any of you consider letting Ms. Badu assist in your birth?
