Book Smart: 7-year-old Publishes Book About Obesity

Tuesday Nov 15, 2011 – by

Yesterday we told you about 8-year-old tiny tycoon Harli Jordean, and today we’re shouting out another little one that’s doing her thing.

At just seven-years-old, LaNiyah is a published author. But it’s her latest effort, a book about obesity, that’s closet to her heart.

After rapidly gaining weight when she was just three, her parents consulted her pediatrician and put little LaNiyah on a strict diet. When she continued to gain weight despite being on the diet, LaNiyah’s parents knew something was wrong. Now at seven, LaNiyah weighs in at over 100 pounds, and her unexplained weight gain has caused her to be the victim of taunting and name-calling.

To handle the bullying related to her weight, LaNiyah and her mom wrote a book entitled Not Fat Because I Wanna Be to help other kids deal with being overweight. LaNiyah says she wrote the book because she wants “people to learn that bullying isn’t cool to do to other people,” and she hopes her book will make a difference.

With childhood obesity reaching epic porportions, many kids will be able to relate to LaNiyah’s story.

Such a great thing. My neice is struggling with the same issue–no matter what measures we takes she just continues to gain weight. At only 8 yrs old its hard for her to understand why she can’t eat everything, and sometimes it leads to her just breaking down and crying–which let me tell you is THE MOST HEARTBREAKING thing ever.

Great story! This little girl needs to be applauded for taking a negative and turning it into a positive. With so many children in the news that committed suicide as a result of bullying more parents probably need to pick up this book. Kudos!

Why isn’t there a link so that we might either:
    1) Read an excerpt, IR
    2) Purchase this “recommended” book.

    Somebody’s missing the boat here.

    Too bad.
