After being married to his wife Keasha Ruteleage-Draft for one month former NFL star, Chris Draft was stricken with the news that his wife succumbed to her battle with cancer. Chris who is an 11 year NFL veteran married Keisha Rutelage in a reception on November 27th, she passed on December 27th.

During their wedding Keasha wheeled her way down the aisle in a wheel chair, taking the last few steps to say her “I do’s” and salute her husband. Friends are asking that we send prayers to the family. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Draft.

Below is footage from their wedding day.

Beautiful and heartbreaking story, only marred by the fact that it was poorly written– “stricken with the news that his wife succumbed to her battle with cancer.” He had to receive the news? Wasn’t he with her when she died??? Also, “wheeled her way down the aisle in a wheel chair…” really?

    SHUT UP!!!!

  • kay

Oh wow! She looked so beautiful and happy! I had to refrain from crying because I know it has to be very difficult for everyone especially her husband. god bless and keep you all during your time of sorrow Mr. Draft.

  • damidwif

    I was wondering same.

Although I think this is a sad story, I have to wonder what its purpose is? A piece to evoke emotion and wrench the heart whilst simultaneously reaffirming the belief in true love/marriage and benevolence and to realize that maybe our lives aren’t so this year comes to an end? The video was great: footage and music. However, I’m left wondering what kind of cancer did she have? How long did she have cancer? Does she/they have children? Who is she aside from an NFL (former) wife and would anyone care if it weren’t written in this context? What were her accomplishments?

Doing a search across the net, other authors describe the wedding in such a way as though he was doing her a favor–granting her dying wish. Apparently, she was terminally ill so that fact that he married her at that late date begs at least this question: how long have they been together?

Anyway, while her loved ones mourn, maybe the least that could be done by others is to acknowledge what she did in her life. She did play a role in the Draft Foundation…which has to do with health. Maybe some writer should investigate and report on that. We could use this as a lesson on health in black communities, which, I believe, is a much better take home lesson.

  • artelia

    This is so touching…

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. That’s Love brother… Thank you being an example.

Most people look all over for someone or something that will make them a whole person and fulfill their existence. It is truly a blessing to find love and know it to be true love.

But, the one that loved Mrs. Draft most was God the Father. And to be out of the body, is to be in His presence. The family and her husband, her friends and loved ones, all who knew her have my condolescences and sympathy.

  • Xosa Gaston

    Best of luch, to you

  • Bunny

    That’s what I was wondering

  • tito

really? does it really matter!!!!!! WOMEN

  • vianca

Seriously? Is that all you can think about? A woman has died, it should cross your mind that maybe he married her because he loved her! Who the hell marries someone BECAUSE they have cancer?

  • http://FACEBOOK Nena Knights

Death has no respect for who or what we are there is one thing guaranteed to us is that as sure as we live we will one day die but the journey does not end there, our spiritual life then begins..and true liveing starts..let us live our lives here and now in a Godly way worthy to walk into that life with God. please have some compassion for this man who has suffered such a great loss.and encourage him..where is our compassion for one another..theone that Christ commandus to have for each other.???

  • Simone Knights

Lady do you know what compassion means? What would make you be so ignorant to post
this stupid comment! This man just lost his wife, stop being a player hater and pray for this family. To the Draft family you are in my prayers and thoughts may God keep you all encouraged and uplifted.

  • damidwif

nicole, it is a valid question. i propsed some related questions in my comment on the first page. had the article been written well, we would know more about the deceased. but this article was about mr draft

  • Moe

“Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”
    Siddhartha Guatama Buddha

I hope that Mr. Draft and both families remember the happiness so evidently shared leading up to and on this day and thank them for sharing this snapshot of their lives with us to remind us that life is uncertain – we should cherish those we love every day.

  • nobody important

well that’s sad but his life is still better than most.

  • Jameika Pressley

I’ve been married for 13 years and I can only pray that I get to spend all of my life with the man I truly love. This is love beyond words. This is what loving for life and more is..My God continue to keep his hands on you and your family.

  • aiych

That’s what I was wondering. Since she was going to pass away soon, I bet he was like “Welp, might as well give her a wedding since I won’t have a divorce to worry about”. I bet if she wasn’t terminally ill she would still be just a girlfriend.

  • Lejuana Washington

To whoever asked that really insensitive question that was truly immature and thoughtless. He didn’t have to marry her but he did. Sometimes some things are better left unsaid. I hope and pray you’re never faced with something like that, because if the shoe was on the other foot you may think twice about asking such a question like that. God has a will for each and every one of our lives and it doesn’t matter if he married her because of cancer or not now does it.
To Mr. Draft, this really did something to me reading and watching you alls video it just makes me think of how precious life is. Yesterday a man just got hit and killed by a dump truck, crossing the street to come to work in Charlotte, NC, he usually rides the train and he never even drives to work from what I heard. Today another man gets hit in the same exact spot but he doesn’t die, but I say all of that to say we have to cherish each and every single moment with our love ones and thank God that he gives us new mercies every morning. I promise I will be praying for you and your family. May God bless you and keep you. God will get you through this very difficult time. I know you will miss her. Love you in Jesus name.

  • Vertigo Schtick

Or y’know… maybe he wanted to make her happy before she died. The cynicism here is just too telling.

  • arvionne joseph

may the good lord give you the grace and the strength to go on keep the faith, and be strong.

  • Sharon

    Hi Nicole,

i was wondering the same thing. Did Chris Draft marry her becuase she was terminally ill. He had dated for so many yeras. To prove his love he should have married her yeras ago so perhaps that would have had memories of being married. Not memories of her being ill and married for i month.

  • Sharon

    Hi Shadders,

They dated for years, I truly wish he would have married her years ago.Does anybody know why he waited until she was terminally ill?

  • Sharon

    To damidwif,

They dated for 6 years. She died of lung cancer and she was not a smoker. I am not aware of them having kids.

  • Sharon

    To damidwif,

    She was terminally ill.

  • Sharon

    Hi Brandi,

I cannot give out the families personal information. However, I would like to thank you on behalf of the Rutledge and Draft families for honoring Chris Draft and LaKeasha Rutledge-Draft during your wedding. Congratulations on your marriage.

  • African Mami

JESUS CHRIST! What kind of a question is this?! URRRRRRGH!!! folks kill me!

  • Sharon

I agree it was a beautiful ceremony. I was happy to see her walk up the aisle and dance at the reception.
