Urgent: Help Find Dr. Tosin Oyelowo (UPDATED)

by Britni Danielle

Update: As we can all tell, this a fluid story, and we here at Clutch want to respect Dr. Tosin Oyelowo and her family and friends in these unfortunate times. Hopefully, this story will be updated as soon as possible and once we receive word, we will pass it along to all who are concerned in our community.

By now, we’re all familiar with the story of the missing blonde-haired, blue-eyed girls who meet misfortune while on vacation or walking home from class, but we rarely hear about the scores of black and brown women who go missing everyday.

After Dr. Tosin Oyelowo went missing and not hearing about her story on the news, her friends created a website they hope will help bring her home.

According to the website Help Bring Tosin Home, Dr. Oyelowo went missing on December 9 in Charleston, South Carolina where she is working as a resident after graduating from the University of Charleston West Virginia School of Pharmacy. I was able to find very few details besides a local write-up about her situation. So, that’s where we come in. Social media has the power to change things and help police find Tosin and bring her home.

Her friends and family are asking that you share her story via social media (use the hashtag #TosinOyelowo) to raise awareness about her absence. If you have any information regarding Dr. Oyelowo’s disappearance call the Charleston Police Department at 843-577-7434.

What is going on in the Carolina’s? Damn. Thank you for brining this story to light.

  • TheBestAnonEver, Part 2

Just yesterday, while at the gym, I watched the Today Show go through the Aruba missing woman story, the People’s Court missing woman story, and the white girl that hurt herself story. They have covered these stories over 10x, but nothing on this missing woman? I mean, do I need a breakdown of the miraculous healing of the woman that stupidly walked into a propeller? I was waiting for a White Girl stubbed her toe story next.

When they are called out, they come up with the stupid excuse it is because they cannot identify with non-white people. Can you imagine anyone else coming out with the ‘I am a sociopath that lacks empathy’ excuse and gets away with it.

  • TheBestAnonEver, Part 2

Brilliant woman. I hope she is found soon.

  • MarloweOverShakespeare

My prayers go out to her and her family.

  • rhirhi-hater

what is even weirder is I live in WV and they barely covered it here

  • MrsTDJ

Based on the comments on that site, there seems to be alot of conflicting information. The family seems NOT to support the efforts to publicize the case and there is a new article regarding a woman that jumped off a local bridge the same date that this woman disappeared. It would seem prudent to not spread the story like wildfire in case there is more to it.

  • Niki

Thank you for sharing this information. I pray for her and her family, and hope that she is found.

  • Isis

    I hope shes ok.

This country gives less than a damn about Black People – look at the disrespect and hatred that’s spewed against our President ! I for one am sick and tired of having to ‘consider the feeling of white folks’ – all the while our dignity is spit upon! If by saying it is clear cut racism, and this offends those of the other persuasion, I GIVE A RAT’S ASS! Attorney General Holder should be made aware of this travesty. If this Black man fails to act, then it falls back on us at the grass roots level. Let’s find this Sista!

*Shaking my head* As much as I web surf, this is the first time I am hearing about her.

  • CD86

‘Rhirhi – hater’, I am going to have to be anal here and let you know that if your name is in reference to the singer, her name is spelled Rihanna, so your name should be ‘RihRih – Hater’

  • Alexandra

I could imagine how many more are missing; I only heard of this because it was posted on this site. That’s why sites like Clutch are beneficial.
I’ll pass the info and I hope she is found.

  • Duchess

I live in London and I have just registered a twitter account for her https://twitter.com/HaveYouSeenTosi.

For some reason I am unable to post it on the the Help bring Tosin home website and would appreciate it if someone does.

I’ll also blog about her on my blog in a few minutes.

This story struck a cord as I have a niece called Tosin.

Sending good vibes to her loved ones.

Oh? That certainly puts a whole other spin on it.

I’ll be sure to post! Thank you!

I’m a little fed up with the media coverage of Barbie when she disappears, but I haven’t heard a word about this til now…Phone calls, e-mails, facebook & Twitter accounts of CNN, ABC, NBC & CBS needs to be blown up with info about her in they get into action!

  • apple

i saw this on tumblr of all places days ago, 1,200 notes at the time .. i wonder how many it has now

  • Beautiful Mic
  • Alexandra

That’s so sad to hear. I hope her family pulls through.

  • Blkqueen

I Went on the site and saw nothing…why isnt there a site with details? I have no idea of anything. How can we help with no information??

  • Beautiful Mic

The university already took down the URL for her residency profile and removed her from the residency list.

    wow.

  • Ginger

Oh no! I hope people will continue to spread the word. A cute little blonde went missing where I live and she’s in the paper all the time, for the past 3 months. Such an inequality in these matters, let’s change that!

  • Joan Hart

I have heard a lot about this beautiful young lady the past few days. I sincerly belive the authorities should keep this case active. They can not have a motive for the conclusion that they have made. They need to ask more questions. The answer is out there somewhere. Above all I pray that this family is given peace , that peace that surpasses understanding.. We all are with in spirit and we love you.

  • Gene

I wish people would get there facts straight before writing these blogs and starting these rumors. I am a friend of Tosins and I wish people would respect her friends and family’s privacy at this time. There is a reason this is not being brodcasted nationally as a missing person. (and no its not because she is not a blonde haired blue eyed female.)

  • SAA

This website and others like to spout statistics, race-bait and focus on sensational topics without many facts to support their claims. Unfortunately your friend was just another story. May you find peace during this difficult time Gene.

We were asked by at least 30 of our readers to post this story. We are still trying to find out the real story – but while we are waiting we wanted to do our part and post to help out in spreading the word if this young lady needs our help.

Also – if you feel as Clutch does do that and posting for fun SAA – feel free to stop visiting. Seriously.

hi gene. sad to hear about the missing lady. i’m a pharmacist myself. i think people are only trying to help. i don’t imagine that they mean any harm by expressing their frustration with the system. try to be a bit more respectful of all these concerned people. stay blessed

  • jasmine

dede, it appears that this is not a missing persons case, but a possible suicide. a few posters have provided links with updated information as of this afternoon. fyi. either way, it’s a very sad story and my heart goes out to ms. oyelowo’s family and friends.

  • http://www.clutchmagazine.com Clutch

    Hi Jasmine –

Thanks sis. I saw them – but I don’t want to put anything out there or update the piece until we know for sure what happened. As soon as we confirm – I will update the story.

    Thanks again :)

Black women are the least cared about people in this country. Stories like this don’t surprise me in the least. And people let’s face it…..this trend is never going to change.

New reports in the media tonight coming out of Charleston say she is the female who jumped off a bridge on the day she was reported missing. The police have found her car, driver’s license and other items in her car. Apparently, she committed suicide, which is deeply sad.

Thank you Gene. Tosin is my cousin and we would really appreciate if everyone would respect our privacy during this difficult time. The investigation is still ongoing so we cannot reach a conclusion as to what has happened. Please keep us in your prayers.
