5 Web Shows to Watch In 2012, What’s On Your List?

Monday Jan 2, 2012 – by

As TV networks continue to ignore audiences of color, the web has become a bastion for shows by writers, directors, and producers of color.

By now we’re all familiar with the success of the webseries The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl and Milk + Honey, but there are so many well-written and well-produced shows on the web. From black comic book style shows, to talk and travel series, the internet has been great to up and coming filmmakers.

But what should you be checking for in 2012? The list is long and varied, but here are my recommendations for great web shows to add to your que this year.

12 Steps to Recovery

I discovered Tony Clomax’s hilarious webseries 12 Steps to Recovery last year, but the show just keeps getting better and better. It follows Parrish Diaz as he tries to recover from a broken heart. It’s been called ‘Sex & the City meets Curb Your Enthusiam’ and it’s absolutely hilarious. Check out the first episode.

This comes on TV1, but since I don’t have it I’ll be catching Verses & Flow online at luxuryawaits.com. There’s some great spoken word for believers on http://www.p4cm.com as well.

What happened to Milk and Honey?

Can I add Awkward Black Girl unto your list. That web series is funny and highlights so many humane moments in life.

Did you read the intro? – it’s mentioned. I think the point of the list it to introduced other web series – we know about Awkward and Milk and Honey – they are trying to showcase others.

I will make an effort to watch because if nothing else, it is a great way to show network television that we want to see more of us on television. Network tv and their advertisers. Black people unite and boycott network television and their advertisers!!!!!! This is the only way we can see more of us!!!!!!

Wasn’t the guy that played Tommy on Martin back in the day supposed to be producing a show called Boulevard West? It had Janine from House of Payne in it. I caught an episode a long while back, thought it was gonna happen. It looked like it was going to be one to watch.

That Champion Road looks like a true winner to me. The production, cast, and message is great. I hope there’s a network smart enough to pick this project up…from what I see in this pilot, I’d be tuned in every week to watch it.

I am so excited to see more Champion Road. I could totally picture it on Spike, FOX, BET, FX even HBO or Showtime. Heck, I’d even watch it on TNT or OWN, … “Hello, lady O.” It definitely does fill a void that is too often overlooked. Congrats to R.L. Scott and the talented group of actors for such a brilliantly polished show.
