Girl Crush Confessions, Do You Have One?

Just about every woman has one. It’s what most men’s sordid sexual fantasies are made of, but they have little to do (maybe) with our own actual attraction. It’s that ‘thing’ that has broken through your otherwise heteronormative way of being. Urban Dictionary defines this phenomenon as, “An overwhelming sense of awe felt by a girl for another girl elicited by varying causes ranging from deep respect to unadulterated lust. May result in any or all of the following: general euphoria, prolonged sense of inspiration, desire for intellectual-intercouse with crush, simple sexual arousal.” Yep, a real live ‘girl crush.’

For better or for worse I fancy myself heterosexual (for the most part anyway), but if I weren’t, there are a few women in my imagination who could really get it. It may be their minds, the spirit they have for living, their passion, their intellectual curiosity, their bodies (God knows the female form looks a whole heap better than our male counterparts in le’ buff),or it could be a smile, the way she moves, her business acumen in a world of cut throat businessmen or any number of other qualities she may elicit.

A lot of times women get a bad rap for so-called cattiness, but those among us who have girl crushes are able to rise above the fray in this regard. I have a few, and I ain’t ashamed to call them out by name. Here is my list of my top 10 ‘girl crushes’ in no particular order, of women who I admire, and who have slick gotten the business in my over active imagination.

1.  Tracee Ellis Ross - Chameleon 

She’s holds an Ivy League degree from Brown University, her acting chops are amazing, she’s funny as hell, her fashion sense is unmatched…and Good Lord that BODY!

2. Evita Turqoise Robinson – Globe Trotter

Visionary behind Nomadnesstv.com. She is an absolute joy, and her passion for life and the way in which she travels the world solo like a true renegade woman almost makes my love come down.

3. Desiree Rogers – H.W.I.C.

Former Social Secretary in President Obama’s Administration and now CEO of Johnson Publishing Company, publisher of Ebony and Jet Magazine. Mrs. Rogers has got to be the epitome of how one can be the consummate business woman and mother while maintaining her sexy at the same time. Kudos to you Ms. Rogers.

4. Neicey Nash – TV Personality

Ms. Nash’s mother wit, magnanimous spirit, and down to earth attitude are just some of the reasons she stays winning. She is a bombshell, and has racks on top of racks to top it off. I see you Ms. Niecey.

5. Eartha Kitt – Legend

Most know Ms. Kitt for her sultry kitten-like voice, but she was indeed ahead of her time. Starring in the coveted role of Catwoman on Batman, the hit sitcom series in the 1960’s, could not have been an easy feat for a Black woman but she achieved it nonetheless and she aged like fine wine.

6. Rakia Reynolds – Proprietor of Skai Blue Media/Fashionista Extraordinaire/Wife/Mother

Rakia is a breath of fresh air, her flair for fashion, her girlish looks, charm, and ability to be a young career woman working inside of her true passion is awe-inspiring indeed.

7. Roxy Reynolds – Adult Film Star

I know I am not the only lady who watches adult films on occasion (#sideeye). Roxy Reynolds is the T R U T H in her field, and I must give credit where credit is due. She never disappoints, and I have learned a few tricks from watching this woman in action.

8. Earlecia Richelle - Producer of the Style Setter

This Haute Couture world trendsetter gets my vote for being brazen, and about her business, all while doing it in a Chanel handbag and vintage DVF frames. Not to mention she is quite the intellectual to boot. I imagine going on international shopping sprees with this chic, and sizing up her assets in our chicy new finds.

9. Deanna Sutton – Hustler 

I don’t know if I should say this about the boss lady, but I admire her drive, and her hustle is unmatched. Founder of CLUTCH, and Editorial Director of both Vibe Vixen and Coco & Crème, this woman must have more than 24 hours a day to accomplish all that she does, and she maintains her calm and beauty while doing so.

10. Erykah Badu - Renaissance Woman 

Not only does she have the ability to captivate a man’s heart, the green-eyed bandit has also stolen mine. She marches to the beat of her own drum, makes poignant thought provoking music, nurtures her babies, and as of lat,e has become a mid-wife. Not to mention that “Window Seat” video was an iconic moment in time. I want my body to look that great after 3 kids.
