We all know that major networks don’t care about Black people and that the web is exploding with amazing content for us, by us.
Last week I featured 5 web shows to add to your play list, and this week I’m back to share yet another good one, “The Couple.”
From the creators of Black & Sexy TV (and the film “A Good Day to Be Black and Sexy”), “The Couple” takes a look the “idiosyncrasies of dating and living together.”
Recently, I had the opportunity to talk to two of the show’s creators, Dennis Dortch and Numa Perrier, about why they created “The Couple” for the web.
They explained: “It was a natural progression from the film A Good Day to be Black and Sexy. Being online extended the Black&Sexy brand and reaches the audience directly and immediately which we really like. We had these fun ideas that we thought would work well on the web. We also use the web as an incubator/testing ground for our ideas to grow into other mediums. We are cross platform (Web TV and Film) and we want to continue along that path. It’s a new creative beast to conquer the web and we really enjoy it.”
Although the web is booming with shows geared toward black audiences, networks continue to ignore us, especially when it comes to images of black folks in love. Because of this, Numa Perrier says they decided to tackle this issue.
“Dennis, myself, and our other creative partner, Jeanine Daniels all gravitate towards this type of content based on personal experience. The Couple was Jeanine’s inspiration based on her previous relationships and it has now expanded into some of the day-to-day situations Dennis and I experience as a real life couple. We all experience relationships so not only is it relatable but it drives us as human beings.”
“The Couple” will premiere on Valentine’s Day, but while we wait, Black&Sexy TV has dropped several mini-episodes.
Check out the first three mini-episodes of “The Couple” and the first episode of Black&Sexy TV’s other webseries: “The Number.”
Liked the first three (I can see my hubby pulling the beer and donuts stunt… lol) wasn’t crazy about the last one though… chemistry wasn’t quite there. and I love how this conversation came after the ring… seems like there’s quite a number of things that should be discussed before people get engaged… Now that we got the “number” out of the way, all is good! lol… What about kids or no kids, what’s your credit score, debt…
Then again, it’s just a show I guess! :) Looking forward to seeing more of the first couple though!
Loves it!
A good day to be black and sexy is a favorite of mine so I am looking forward to seeing more of the couple and the number
I like them both so far. Can’t wait to see more.
Love it!
wait, there’s no contrived black vs. white tension in these! BORING!!!
I have loved director/writer Dennis Dortch ever since I saw A GOOD DAY TO BE BLACK AND SEXY two years ago. He is amazing, and the realness of his films is just inspiring. Watching his films just reaffirms how much I love being black. Anyway, The Couple is just more of Dortch’s usual awesomeness. I love the minisodes and will certainly be watching the series when it premieres. And I also thought the first episode of The Number was pretty entertaining. Dortch is highly underrated.
I love this Show W Numa Perrier is such a talent ! I have been following her Booming career and i cant wait to see whAT SHE DOES NEXT ! Numa has that Old Hollywood Glamour Class while Still having a down to earth appeal ! keep it up Miss NUMA !
I LOVE this show!!!! I’ve been watching it too and I’m hooked!!!
I want to know who the actress is?? she’s brilliant! Can you reply and let me know a little more about her?
Thanks so much!!!!
I loveeeeeee this show!!! It’s truly unique and unlike anything out there ! The writing and directing are brilliant! AND the acting — wow !! The lead woman blows me away, what an undeniable actress! I think I saw her in a play a while back and she was equally incredible and I knew I could expect great things from her!! Can’t wait to see what’s up next for her. Keep up the amazing work!!!
I love the Number! every couple wants to eventually know about their new partners past. It can get crazy when the numbers vary dramatically when they are compared. Hilarious!
I just absolutely LOVE this! I’ve been following Numa Perrier for a while now (her glove line, and other acting/producing ventures), and I just find her to be so versatile. It’s rare to find content that is true to life and I love the realism that these snippets show. God knows we’ve all had these conversations with the people we are dating. Fantastic representation of the humanity that ensues, especially with “The Number”…I really want to see this on a network!
excellent writing and editing. Ms. Daniels, you are a very good writer and you are connected with a very talented group of actors, directors and producers. Can’t wait to see more!
