Wise Words: Bounce Back

“It’s not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life; it is how you handle what happens to you.” - Zig Ziglar
Setbacks happen. Just recently I received some news that could be considered negative, but because my attitude has shifted, I view it as just an opening for more opportunities. While challenges will surely occur on our journey toward our dreams and goals, how we respond to them will dictate our success. Wallowing in a setback is not only useless, it’s a waste of time. When challenging things occur, acknowledge them, look for the silver lining, and move on.
Happy Tuesday!

Count it all joy!!!!!
All of the ‘Wise Words’ articles don’t seem to take into consideration that some people are depressed…
So do you expect them to give discouraging words of advice? Add to the negativity that you already have about yourself? In your estimation, what is the best way to acknowledge depression or depressed people?
whenever I read your comments, I pause, and meditate on them…not because they are that deep, but because I never know how to react to them…..
Grace: No, I do not expect anything like that. What do you mean by, “Add to the negativity you already have about yourself?”
What is the best way to acknowledge depression and depressed people? Well, for starters, there could be articles written on this website. Likewise, it can be acknowledged by not having people like you blowing it off with statements like, “Add to the negativity that you already have about yourself?”
I take it that maybe you have never experienced depression or a strong form of it.

African Mami: Thanks for the insult. I’m not sure how your inability to react to my comments has anything to do with my previous comment or why you felt the need to tell me that they aren’t ‘deep’. I am not trying to be ‘deep’ on this website. I’ve learned many times over that nobody wants to read that kind of shit anyway.
I hope you two don’t have any friends who suffer from depression. Other people’s experiences and feelings shouldn’t be brushed to the side simply because they are not your own.
CD86,
I appreciate you speaking out. Most of the time, it’s easy to be silenced by people who can’t understand what it’s like to live with depression or other mental health disabilities.
You are right; when suffering from depression, for example, “bouncing back” is not as simple as changing one’s attitude. Trust, if it were that simple…..
Anyway, I feel that having articles written by people dealing with mental health issues on daily living as well as the journey to recovery would resonate with a lot of people. Many people suffer in silence.
@ Cali,
That was NOT an insult. I would be a fool to do so! Let me rephrase what I meant.
Whenever, I read your comments, I pause and meditate-not because they are deep but because they are sometimes very indifferent, not the norm. For example, this article-the majority will comment and say thanks for this, or you’ve given me food for thought. You on the other hand, said something quite thought provoking-as far as I’m concerned. I’m never quite sure how to react-because I don’t know how you might take it….especially when I’m only teasing or joking.
My sincerest apologies if you felt my comment was an insult-FAR FROM THAT mama!
I’m sorry about my tone. Allow me to clarify. For one, I was talking about the general “you” not “you,” specifically (as in not the pointing the finger at you). When I said that I was not trying to pick a fight, it was more out of surprise more than anything. How much more positive can “wise words” get? that is where I was going with that. “don’t take into consideration” is different from saying “I wish Wise words could speak to people like me.” It’s slightly different; it shifts the frame of focus.
Then, what types of articles on depression? I am asking out of curiosity. I work with minority adolescents, I have worked with depressed people, and I keep a blog where I talk about black women and mental health. So I am interested in why things like this would or would not appeal to people who are depressed.
There are some other blogs out there, that focus more on black women and mental health specifically.
Great one! Thanks Britni :)
Thanks ! I really need to reade this ;-)
