Yesterday a friend of mine sent me the link to Lil’ Kim’s new single, asked me what I thought, and challenged me to find one “real” thing in the accompanying photo. All I could come up with was Kim’s elbow, and I’m not even fully confident that that’s real.
We’re probably as used to Lil’ Kim’s ever-morphing face, hair, and body as we’re ever going to get and if Photoshop suddenly ceased to exist we probably wouldn’t recognize her in any of her album art. Still, it’s hard to ignore her Barbie-ization and focus on her music, especially when she’s had such a hard time in recent years proving her relevance without resorting to beef with younger and more contemporary female rappers i.e. Nicki Minaj. Kim’s new single “If You Love Me” definitely sounds like something from the current hip-hop era and wisely focuses on topics other than who wants war with her and the rest of Brooklyn. Take a listen:
