Tyler Perry is either loved or loathed, but few black directors elicit as much debate as Perry. Always ready with his pen, it seems like the actor/director is never at a loss for film ideas, much to the chagrin or delight of the masses.

One guy (or gal), dubbed the “Xpo Terrorist,” isn’t happy about Perry’s success. S/he took their frustrations out on a billboard in Los Angeles for Perry’s upcoming film, Good Deeds, scrawling: “Stop letting him make movies.”

While I may not be a fan of Perry’s work, limiting his ability to make films isn’t the answer either.

But what do you think? Have you ever taken your frustrations out on an advertisement?

had the lead in the film been another actor i doubt the sprayed words would have made it to the board. even though tyler dubs his film titles with “a tyler perry film”, having not seen his mug on the ‘cover’ of this here poster, welp, the perpetrator probably would not have thought twice about graffiti-ing.

  • malik hemmans

Lmfao he sprayed what a lot of people feel

  • girlformerlyknownasgrace

This guy is damned if he do damned if he dont. :( i will see the film. Judge me all ya want.

I think people should stop with the attacks on TP, and no, I’ve never defaced an advertisement.

  • binks

No and how about just not watching or supporting his movies….you do have a choice….shrugs

  • SWGH

LMAO. It’s brilliant in its simplicity, hahahaha…

  • divinnalafeme

I can’t stand how people like to fuck with Tyler Perry give it a rest I don’t see anyone else making black films and giving black actors/actresses more work than Tyler has and I for one don’t even find much offense in any of his movies the way people go on about them you would think he was promoting films called nappy headed hoes like really it is all just comedy and I think people are overly sensitive or just being haters I think it is a combination of the two when it comes to him. And good deeds is Madea free so why are we complaining again???

  • Alexandra

Exactly right!!? That’s so immature. It won’t stop his fans from seeing the film.

  • Kacey

Tyler Perry has the right to make as many of those melodramatic, formulaic films as he wants, just like I have the right to never see them!

  • Gigi Young

    Those who can’t do, criticize.

  • Sacastically Yours

I’m sick of the same story angles with Perry! His films are so predictable & totally boring!! I wouldn’t even watch his movies on bootleg!!

  • Zaza

What pisses me off about this is the ‘stop letting him’. Who is ‘letting him’ make movies? Perry owns his own studio, is his own boss. Something tells me tthat if it was a white director this graffiti-er wouldn’t for example be saying ‘Stop letting Scorsese making films’. As if , ‘no a black man can’t have made his own success!, there must be a kindly white benefactor allowing him to make films who therefore can ‘stop’ it’.

Get out of here with that paternalistic racist mess! I may not like the tone of the majority of T Perry films, but it’s his right to make them, and your right to choose whether or not to watch.

  • Tameko P

It’s a shame that folks stay hating on a man making a legitimate living. Let Tyler be great!

  • Jess

OK, the title of this article was intentionally misleading and unnecessarily dramatic. Somebody scribbling a few words with a magic marker on a Billboard does not warrant being called vandalism against Tyler Perry movies. I mean come on.

Clutch is just using these drama-queen headlines to drum up support for TP. Best advertising TP could ever want.

    *Cheers* and Amen

I think the problem is that people do want him to be great… Actually we want him to be perfect. Since perfection isn’t possible he will never really win.

In all honesty, I think in order to make successful films you have to watch other successful films… I don’t feel like he looks at a variety of films. I think if he did his films would be different.

No, I have never taken my frustrations out on an advertisement…and I will go & see Tyler’s latest film…Can’t wait! I enjoy his movies.

  • HowApropos

The more people hate, the more money he makes.

I don’t understand all the hate tho’. I wish him the best.

    Amen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Joan

I’m not a Tyler Perry fan, but doing that to his billboard is just stupid and unnecessary.

  • malik hemmans

    he’ll eventually fade out

  • Sparkle

Your comment hit the nail on the head. I never even thought about that when I hear the term “stop letting him”. I guess the grafitti would have been more accurate if it said “Stop supporting his movies”. But whatever. Perry movies defiintiely follow the same formulas and handful of actresses and personally I lost interest after Why Did I Get Married? But obviously, he has a large enough fan base that identify with his movies.

  • Angie

Huh? Have I ever taken my frustration out on an advertisement? You mean climb up on a billboard and apply graffiti? As a grown ass woman? Um….no….

  • http://www.myspace.com/alishamgray Alisha

@ZenMamaPolitic I really can’t blame the woman. He is terrorizing young black single women, by portraying them a virtual homeless prostitutes w/qualifying virtue; so thusly..he should be terrorized (or his billboard atleast). Go.. Xpo Terrorist. You Rock.
