Seriously, Why Isn’t Amber Riley More Famous? Watch Her Nail ‘I Will Always Love You’
I admit, I don’t watch Glee.
It’s confusing and includes waaaaay too many random musical numbers (I know that’s the point. Still…). Despite this, I still know who Amber Riley is, and every time she opens her mouth I wonder why she isn’t even more famous than she is right now.
Last night was one of those moments.
During the episode, Mercedes (Riley) killed–I mean absolutely, positively saaaaang–Whitney Houston’s rendition of the Dolly Parton classic “I Will Always Love You.”
Since the megastar passed away last weekend, everyone has been scrambling to upload their own versions of classic songs paying homage to Whitney, but last night, Riley got it so right I couldn’t even look away.

Really? So no one has considered the possibility that, because she is a young, undiscovered talent, she is under a contract that doesn’t allow her to work on anything but Glee?

Agreed! I loved her rendition of Jill Scott’s “hate on me” she was good on this clip but not great but I do think Amber Riley is super talented but in holiday talent is not even half of the equation anymore:( you have yo have the “look”

Because of the obvious…she’s fat and doesn’t have a great agent/pr team. Hollywood will let in “just so many fat women” and of black women. However, with the right agent/pr…it could push one’s popularity over the top.

if she was built like halle berry and had the complexion of beyonce, she would be more famous. I stopped watching Glee (apart from its pro-gay message in every episode)because despite amber’s obvious talents they constantly choose to highlight Lea Michelle’s talents instead, when we all know Amber could sing lea under the table.

The thing I appreciate most about this performance is that she captures Whitney Houston’s nuances. I’ve heard this song countless times and so when I heard J Hud, it sounded to me like she just learned the song that day. Don’t get me wrong, it was heartfelt. She took me to church in the beginning, but it wasn’t quite there for me. I think it was little out of her range and I know she was nervous. She has some ways to go, but I appreciate her stepping up to the mic.

She really has a nice voice. I never really watched Glee because I pretty much knew the story line they would have for Ms. Riley. As for Jhud, she gave her own version of the song. I wasn’t looking some someone at the Grammys to sing just like Whitney. JHud sang it in a deeper key and I think she did fine. I think she was filled more with emotion than being nervous.
She’s doing well to be on a “hit” primetime program that gives her exposure, a chance to actively practice her craft/passion and a “steady” paycheck.
If she’s supposed to be Whitney/Janet/Rihanna/Beyonce “famous,” she – like any other talented and ambitious person – has to have a Whitney/Janet/Rihanna/Beyonce machine and, probably, more time.
As far as this rendition of IWALY… It’s oddly cutesy(fied) and watered down. Dolly’s original is very low-key and poignant; Whitney’s cover is a mix of clarity, power, subtlety and technical superiority. It’s the standard by which all imitations will be judged – and Amber (like Jennifer H.) isn’t seeing Whitney.
The scene from the show was creepy. I’m glad I don’t watch Glee (I watched this clip b/c of the fuss).
I think Amber can continue to have a great career in entertainment. She’s skilled, already in the business and seems to be passionate about the field…

Beautiful voice. Unfortunately we know why she’s not more popular….it’s because she a little chunky. I’m not saying that’s fair….I’m just saying that’s reality
she was better than j hud- i jhud but she relies on runs to much and being loud- she sang pure- i wish people would start singing pure and straight without all that vibrato crap
