We all know the drill. Half of all marriages end in divorce, and if you’re black, chances are you’ve been beat over the head with the idea that black folks don’t get married, and black women, well…who wants us? </sarcasm>
But most of us know the truth. We’re either the products of, been around, or been apart of healthy marriage (yes, they exist), so we know that the media only tells a very small, very skewered part of the story.
In honor of Valentine’s Day, the site BlackLoveForum decided to compile a list of the “14 Most Inspiring Black Couples.” Although you may default to Michelle and Barack; Denzel and Pauletta; or Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance, other prominent black couples are out there living and loving each other openly.
While I know some of y’all will wonder why “black love” and “why black couples,” it’s just something about seeing two people who look like you sharing a love so deep you can’t help but smile.
Who are some black couples who inspire you?
(and let’s not fight…this is a positive post, ok? cool).
my parents.
Ditto
+1 – Been around the block long enough to know that it is impossible to know ANYTHING about strangers’ marriages.
nice
Probably my cousins’ marriage and my younger brothers’ relationship. Apart from the Obamas I don’t really look up to any celeb relationships. I WOULD like for me and my future man to look like Timothy Bloom and V in “Til the End of Time,” however.
Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee- that is all…
Ditto on Ozzie and Ruby

Thank you for this article. Black love is so beautiful. We need to see more of this and hopefully we will. It’s not all about struggling, open relationships, or the ones that result in divorce. We can sustain long-lasting beautiful relationships (teamwork) to build ourselves up as well our communities. Great article!!!
Trisha, that is EXACTLY why we launched our site, to combat some of the stereotypes and bring about MOVEMENT for change in black relationships.
i love black women and couples but i’m kinda tired of seeing barack and michelle….
Malik, that is why we chose couples that have made a large impact but had little visibility. Please check out our post.

Barack & Michelle and Jay-Z & Beyonce and it’s not just because they are high profile. I admire couples that have busy careers that still find a way to make their relationships work and those who keep their business or issues they may face (because all couples face them) between the two of them.

I agree, particularly with Jay Z and Beyonce. I admire the fact that they kept their relationship extremely low profile. I think the things that you value and are sacred you should treasure. They realize this which is why they don’t have the media all over their relationship, nor they they use their relationship for monetary gain. I also admire the fact that they dated for 7/8 years prior to getting married. They got to know eachother properly (thus increasing the possibility of their relationship not ending in divorce) and Jay obviously being the older one let Beyonce reach her goals and do her thing without pushing her, because supposedly he had wanted to married her way before they got married.
I agree about Jayz and Beyonce. I don’t know what goes on between them behind closed doors but I admire the fact that he doesn’t stand in the ways of her goals. As a career oriented woman, I hope to find a man who supports me and my dreams someday.
My parents, My brother/sister-in-law and I have a celeb couple in mind but they’re not black :(
