Garage Magazine Celebrates Black Hair

by Britni Danielle

Finally somebody got it right!

Remember that Vogue Italia Haute Mess fiasco that seemed to appropriate (and even mock) urban hairstyles? Or how about that Beyonce blackface kerfuffle in L’Officiel?  Despite our support of magazines that include even a sprinkling of color, the majority glossies have continued to fail in showcasing black beauty in a proper light.

But the latest issue of Garage magazine is spot on.

Featuring models Jeneil Williams, Nairoby Matos, Cora Keegan, Ataui Deng, and the hair artistry of Astou Toure and Thomas Dunkin, the newest issue of Garage includes a beautiful ode  to black hair.

Reminds me of work by Nigerian photographer J.D. Okhai Ojeikere. Also, I think you may have the wrong link to Garage Mag.

    Very nice

confused about how a blond wig/weave on a black girl celebrates black hair.

otherwise, it’s just okay to me. i’m not all that excited about it. and it wouldn’t make me buy their magazine. sorry.

    but, good effort.

I love how they didn’t limit the definition of black hair and the artistry of the styles. I know some people need blackness to be in their narrow box to fully appreciate it, but those involved with this process did just the opposite.

These images are gorgeous! I tried to find them on the Garage website and I was not able to. Do you have a link to the actual spread? I’d like to re-post this on my blog, with due credit, of course.
