It’s clear the down economy can make for strange bedfellows, but things just got a whole lot more interesting in Spain.
The country is experiencing tough financial times and like its EU counterpart Greece, teeters on the verge of insolvency. Now, as unions prepare to strike on Thursday to protest Spain’s proposed austerity measures, the ladies of the night have joined the cause.
According to the Daily Mail (take it with a grain of salt), Spain’s high-end sex workers are lending their support to the workers’ cause and are apparently withholding their services from the country’s wealthy bankers until they loosen the credit markets.
The Daily Mail reports:
The capital’s largest luxury prostitute trade association, which is reportedly initiating the strike, said: ‘We are the only ones with a real ability to pressure the sector.
“We have been on strike for three days now and we don’t think they can withstand much more,” added the woman, known as Ana MG.
It said the move came after one of its members, Lucia, pressured a bank employee client to grant a loan by halting her “sexual services.”
The country is suffering from a astonishingly high 23 precent unemployment rate and may be facing its third recession in three years. Spain’s unions are gearing up for a general strike, the first since 2010, later this week to protest labor laws that would make it cheaper and easier to lay off workers.
