Watch: ‘Venus vs Mars,’ A UK Web Series About the Ups and Down of Dating

Monday Mar 5, 2012 – by

Ever since we featured Issa Rae’s web series the Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl earlier last year, we’ve been keeping an eye out for interesting web shows, films, and documentaries. Over these past few months I’ve shared many of my favorites, Milk + Honey, 12 Steps to Recovery, The Couple, and HR the Series just to name a few. Now, I’m back with another one to keep an eye on, Mars and Venus a new web show about one girl’s quest to date and mate in Londontown.

Although I’ve seen my fair share of web shows, this is the first that I’ve watched from the UK. While the subject matter isn’t original (there are no shortages of shows about dating), the pilot episode was funny and entertaining, and I’ll definitely be adding this one to my list of things to watch.

Check out the pilot episode of Mars and Venus and let us know what you think!

    I don’t like dating.

  2. avatar Thanks4theGum says:

That was dope! I will have to follow Venus on her journey!

  3. avatar Melissa says:

Looks like we have to turn to web series to get some decent black entertainment. I liked it.

  4. avatar Amani says:

i really enjoyed the pilot. can’t wait to watch more.

At the age of 50, I look at this and think back to how I never played these childish games while dating. While I think this is a grossly over exaggerated view of people of color dating under the age of 25 dating in the UK; it just seems to copy-cat “BET” or something similar. No, I won’t be watching it.

      yeh

you might find my take as a black londoner of your generation (40 +) interesting –

      I agree totally.

But new days make for new ways I guess.

it just seems to copy-cat “BET” or something similar.

yep that about sums it up.

but the bowling scene was funny. Everything else was blah!

Really well put-together show, but…the main protagonist is completely unlikable in my opinion. I understand that she’s the complete opposite of Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl, but there’s a difference between a confident black woman and one who’s completely self-absorbed and catty. It has high production values and a good-looking cast, but I think I’ll be sitting this one out.

I’m with Rachel on this. The main character, Venus, is just totally unlikeable (sidebar: her eyebrows bothered me for some reason, like they’re penciled in or something). Anyway, I’ll watch the next episode and then make up my mind whether I want to keep watching. I think I might be too old for this type of show (sort of the way I felt about Milk and Honey), since I’m 27. I just can’t quite relate to these dating games. Great production value, though, and good acting from the looks of it. I guess black folks will have to turn to the web to see ourselves in film and shows.

I don’t like the main character either. At all. I noticed the eyebrows too, and it almost seems as if there’s an emphasis on her cleavage…*shrug* maybe it’s just me. I’m not sure if it’s an age thing, since I’m 21 and I can’t really relate. It does remind me of a BET-type show. And my dad & brother are named Timothy sooo I’m not quite getting what’s up with that line?… lol…I could tell from the opening introduction of characters thing that I might not like it, but I’m gonna stop hating. lol Production wasn’t too bad.

  8. avatar overseas_honeybee says:

No likey. Not really feeling the main character either. The blind date scene was a mess though. Kudos to her for not layin’ ole boy out.

I loved it..about time we got some good black shows that aren’t about the ‘street life’. I’ll def be watching more.

  10. avatar Socially Maladjusted says:

So having dispensed with the skin tone spectrum of black men in the first episode. Guess where ms lead character’s relationships journey will take her? .

    Yawn!

  11. avatar Freebee33 says:

I liked it, will watch the next episode.

  12. avatar Kacey says:

I agree with those of you who say the main character is unlikeable but I just had a thought – maybe her evolution away from a selfishness and materiality is part of the premise of the show. Perhaps through her dating experiences, growing older, and perhaps finding a dow-to-earth guy, she becomes humbler and matures. Just a thought.

  13. avatar Clarity Jane says:

I tried but I can’t…I’m Sorry. The acting is mediocre at best and the main character is a little pretentious AND those eyebrows…?? Hmmm NO!

    Nice try though.

    • avatar sarah ferg says:

Yeah i know how you feel. I’m personally disappointed coz i wanted to support an all-black British show since there is nothing of the sort in stupid England, but hey what can you do:(

  14. avatar Whatever says:

    It’s cute… I’ll give it a shot

  15. avatar Jessica says:

    i love it

  16. avatar yeathatsme says:

    i liked it a lot!

  17. avatar Dee says:

It was good. I wish they had thicker accents, love when their “th” sounds like “f’s” and when the friend said “You’re taking a piss!” priceless!! Coined phrase from my experience out there!!!” looking forward to the season!
