Although I am mostly a hip hop, jazz, R&B girl, I have those moments where I want to roll down my windows, crank up my stereo and listening to some good ol’ loud, aggressive rock music.
When I was in high school, my BFF and I would get a kick out of turning up the stereo in her parents’ Chevy mini van and make black folks in Inglewood raise their eyebrows as we sped down Crenshaw listening to Rage Against the Machine.
Even today, I still have those moments, when I’m so fed up, amped up, feeling-some-type-of-way-I-need-something-heavy, and when that happens I turn to rock. Give me my Lenny Kravitz, my Fishbone, my Rage Against the Machine, my TV on the Radio, my Bad Brains. All of it.
But what about you Clutchettes and Gents?
When it comes to rock music, what are you feeling?
I love this thread!
Just like rap, there’s not much new stuff out now in the rock genre that I like. As for all-time favorites:
-Hendrix (#1 in my book)
-Joi
-The Doors
-Radiohead
-Steely Dan (wouldn’t exactly classify them as rock though; they’re eclectic)
-Pearl Jam (I’m falling in love with them all over again!)
-Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit is the only rock song I ever hear at a Black nightclub, and the crowd actually gets hype to it, even if they’re not into rock!)
-Blind Melon (such beautiful melodies)
-Alice in Chains
-Guns’n'Roses (til Axl Rose exposed himself as a racist a**hole)
-Fishbone
-Red Hot Chili Peppers (they were IT for me in the 90s)
-Cranberries
-Beck (so prolific!)
-Stone Temple Pilots
Guns N Roses, Green Day, Living Colour!
Green Day definitely-I grew up with them & they’re still cool.
