Have You Ever Been Struck with Body Envy?

From Frugivore – You’ve made some time to get to the gym and get your work out on, but once you get inside your ‘go get ‘em’ attitude turns to one of anxiety, shame or even jealousy once you spot them. The person with the body you wish you had. Just seeing them working out, looking all good and ‘perfect’ makes you want to run and hide.

Sure you don’t think you’re some hideous swamp monster, but you have to admit that you’re a bit envious of this other person’s body and wish you could do more than wish you looked like them.

All of a sudden the wind is knocked out of your workout sail and you feel a bit inadequate working out next to them.

It may not happen often, but surely at some point it has happened to all of us … body envy. That jealous, inadequate feeling when you see some one in the gym (or anywhere) who has the body type you feel like you’re struggling to, or never will, achieve.

  1. Ugh yes heavily! i hate how my body looks when i’m thin and i hate how my body looks when i gain weight. i wish i had wide hips and a small waist like hispanic women but that will never happen because you can’t gain that, its genetics. i hate how i’m 21 and i’ve never been overweight but i’ve always had stretchmarks and cellulite on my thighs,it hurts to see women with like 4 or 5 kids with 0 cellulite and 0 stretchmarks and 1000% Better looking than me and i have no kids at all. that’s embarassing. it makes me angry and wanting to cry.

    • @chanela Don’t waste your 20s hating your body. One day you’ll look back like “I didn’t know how good I had it.” Even though I’m in much better shape now than I was when I was your age, I wish I’d appreciated my young body instead of covering up “flaws”. I hope you learn to accentuate your assets and love what’s yours.

    • oh please. just about anyone can achieve a flat stomach with exercise and a good diet.

people overplay genetics a bit too much. it’s ridiculous and a cop out.

most people are just lazy about their diet and exercise. they over estimate the amount of energy exerted during exercise and underestimate the amount of calories they consume and are not honest about the kind of food they eat.

i know all about the genetic lottery. everyone in my family is overweight, has high blood pressure, etc. except me. you can influence your genetic expression. of course, now some of the people in my family are doing a vegan diet and are dropping weight like crazy.

nope, can’t blame your genetics on everything about you – skin color, height, eye color, yes.

      flat stomach? – no.

    • Goodness, LOL it’s a fact that genetics plays a role in whether someone will have “flat” taunt stomach or serious ab definition 6 pack or whatever.
I believe I spoke to ab definition not just a stomach being flat or taunt. SMH.

  2. try not to pay attention to anyone else at the gym. i don’t care for the bodies of white and asian girls, so i rarely envy them – they don’t have any ass on them.

sometimes when i’m not at the gym and see a girl with nice legs, i get a bit envious. despite the running and biking i do, i wish they were better. oh well. i shouldn’t complain. things could be worse.

  3. I always envision Beyonce and now after this past weekend of seeing “Think Like a Man”, I am thinking of Meagan Goode. Oh how I wish I could just wake up and have their bodies. I’ll take any one of them.

  4. A friend recently asked me whose body I most envied and I couldn’t come up with one single person, still can’t. I have shoe or dress maybe even purse envy, but never body envy. I do acknowledge great physiques but that’s where it ends for me.
